  • Cool anime movies

I've heard a lot of praise regarding Spirited Away, from the guy who made Princess Mononoke, and it look's ok. I'm thinking about buying it, but it's $40!! Can anyone reccomend a good anime movie? I've seen Akira and holy crap it was cool! Anyone remember My Neighbor Totoro..hehe old skool!
    PS2 HDD where are you??

I can recommend a few. For starters there is "X" by clamp, I hear it trashed the manga but I never read the manga so I can only tell you the movie is good, even though it feels a little rushed. Second there is "Jin-Roh", the first half of this movie moves slower than a snail but it picks up in the second half and is a very good movie. Lets see, there are the two "Vampire Hunter D" movies aslo very good. There is "Perfect Blue" which is a bit more mature so if you sensitive to faux-rape scenes you might want to stay away from it, but I still think its a good movie and worth watching at least once. Oh yeah "Ghost in the Shell" is also a worthwhile watch. Um I cant remember many more at the moment but I'm sure some other people will come up with some. Enjoy.

PS. At the very least rent Spirited Away, that movie is outstanding.

Anything by Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki you can pretty much bank on being great (You've already listed My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, but there's also Nausicaa and a few others). The Cowboy Bebop movie is excellent, particularly if you liked the series (coming to theatres in the United States soon, too). I hear the Inu Yasha movie was pretty good, but I haven't been able to watch it yet, so my own comments don't mean much.

I remember watching Totoro way back then and I still love it! Seriously though, you should watch Spirited Away. I watched it in the movies and I was completely blown away. It is one of the best movies on my list. You can easily get a copy off of Ebay for $15.00, that's what I did.

Some other movies you can get into would be classics like Akira, Ghost in the Shell. Some newer ones would be like, Escaflowne The movie, CC Sakura The Movie, Gundam, endless waltz, and other anime movies that spawn from related anime series. I would recommend that you watch the anime series first to really appreciate the movie, also because the movie always contain spoilers for if and when you decide to watch the anime series.

Oh and one more thing, always stay away from English dubbed anime and movies. They always screw up great titles with their low budget translations

I would also recommend GW:Endless Waltz. Blood is also good too.

X can be a good movie if you know the background behind it. They're releasing the X TV series in north america, so I'd suggest watch that first or buy the manga. The movie has a terrible english dub, and for those familiar with the series, they changed a lot. They even replaced one of the main characters.

What's the point of bringing it over here if they are just going to mess it up when it gets here AAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

they changed the english version of spirited away....if u want the full effect...i'd recommend the japanese audio with english subtitles. the change is extremely miniscule though...but i still think it was story altering....

LOLZ so true Durren, so true...

My advice is to stay away from most anime distributed and translated by English companies. Often they distribute anime in smaller chunks (3-4 episodes in 1 dvd when you could cram 8-12) Making you buy more dvd's and further jacking up the price.

For example Cowboy Bebop, one of my favorite animes is currently being distributed with english dub. and cost 14.99 -15.99 in stores for one dvd containing 4-5 episodes, 5 dvds to see the entire series. total cost 79.95 to watch it!

A cheaper option would be to buy the japanese DVD set, 3-4 dvds for the entire anime, cost ranges from $25-35, a diference of $40-50 depending on how lucky you are. So you're basically paying an extra $50 for english speaking actors in japanese anime

The downfall from buying anime in a Japanese DVD set is that often the english subs aren't up to par. At times you'll probably have to break it down word for word to understand what they are talking about. Timing is also in need of improvement, most of the time they rush the subbing resulting in disaster

The BEST way in my opinion is...
Fansubs is the best way to go. Subbers like Soldats, Anime-keep, Anime haven have produce super high quality subs. They are very accurate, and do research before distributing the anime. A Great way to get anime in truckloads!

                    Very, very bad translations
Tenchi Muyo - Extremely annoying voices, hated it so much...
Gundam Wing - Not as bad as Tenchi Muyo, but still not as great
                    DBZ - Bad, bad translation.
Some others i can't think of.....

Hope that this helps you in future anime purchases!

                    Doki....doki...??

Yea they changed the music in DBZ too, i'm not sure why but probably because Funimation is one of the worst dubbing companies. Inuyasha is the worst dubbed anime PERIOD.

"Vampire Hunter D" : Bloodlust (Best drawn anime I have ever seen). "Spriggan" is really good too.

Honestly, I think censoship was a thing of the past. things like DBZ and whut not were edited when anime was fairly uncommon to the states... now that u see places like sam goody, best buy and even target selling a good selection of anime we gota realise that the states not only likes anime but accepts it more. along with this will come less need to censor anything from it's origional form I.E. violence, language and other adult material will juss be expected and excepted from certain titles. Least that's whut my prediction is. And though i havn't seen the series to "X" in its origional form so far the US version seems great and i dun really see many places where censoring may have taken place...other than a few potential nakey scenes but i could care less for that.

As far as movies go yes X was good, Princess mononoke durrr, spriggan, ninja scroll, akira, ghost in the shell, Vampire D Bloodlust, Knocking on heavens door are all safe bets and most are regarded as classics. (infact, you're probably able to rent a majority of these incase ur affraid to drop 25 bucks just to see if one is good or not.)

I would have to recommend "Grave of the Fireflies," a beautiful piece of work from Studio Ghibli, who also brought us "Spirited Away," "Laputa: Castle in the Sky," and "Princess Mononoke".

I would also like to recommend "Spring and Chaos" and "Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis."
