Re: Temporary FFXI & FFXIV Server Shutdown

my host mother bought a shelf of cup noodles, we'll be good for awhile. The mail service is running.

I'm honestly not sure what can be done to help at this point. The people in Touhoku are far worse off, but I'm not sure if donations are really needed, or will really have much of an impact. Obviously, if you have the ability to fly in a few extra power plants, we could probably use them, but I mean, I don't see what can be done to help by individuals beyond petitioning their governments to help (which, at this point, seems like more of a logistical problem than that people don't want to help).

People here are of course reducing electrical consumption, but turning your lights off on the NA grid won't help for crap (well, won't help us anyway, obviously electrical conservation is a good thing anyway).

So help would be better used to deliver trucks, cranes and the sort of heavy equipment needed to move stuff around and clear the roads rather than the usual food/meds/water/basic necesity items?

      I surely hope aiding organizations are taking note of that. <_<;

It really depends on the area you are in. Some areas are in dire need of food/clothing/shelter/drinking water and others are still functioning and need minimal effort. Right now the concern is to get to any trapped people and provide for those that are displaced. If you want to help, and even $5 is helping, donate to a established charity like the Red Cross.

I did my checking in with friends.

Turns out my friend Mai - though I haven't managed to reach her - actually moved back to the States two days prior to the earthquake, which I found out through an old LS mate. I imagine her being worried about her family and friends there is why she hasn't written back, but that's fine with me, really. I shouldn't be any kind of priority in her life right now.

As for my friend Justin (an English teacher), he's made his way back from Tokyo to Kitakami in Iwate and rejoined his wife and kids, but it seemed like he went though quite an ordeal to get there, but he finally made it back to them.

People by and large are self entitled jackasses. The world revolves around them and they will never understand why they need to be put out over something that didn't affect them.

Not exactly a religious zealot, but Tokyo's own Governor had some rather sick thoughts about this disaster. Its just sad that people like this exist, and are voted into office no less:

The identity of the Japanese people is greed.
This tsunami represents a good opportunity to cleanse this greed, and one we must avail ourselves of.

Indeed, I think this is divine punishment.

Those statements mimic what Pat Robertson of the 700 Club tried to say when Haiti was hit with their earthquake last year. He blamed them for being a satanic society of devil worshipers who practiced voodoo and they were getting their just reward for their un-Christian practices.

Seems like everyone wants to blame religion, God, and heavenly bodies in the sky for all the bad shit that happens in the world, when really, there was a slogan back in the 60's that summed up life in general and all the bad things that can sometimes occur in life: "Shit Happens."

It does and you have to be strong and survive through it. It really sux ass and sometimes, it's all beyond your control. You take the damage, get up, and try to move on with your life.

On a side note, FFXI, while seeming like it's gonna be dead after all this, is really kinda going stronger than ever. Friday there was 1500 people online on Gilgamesh, one of the servers getting merged (into Carbuncle no less and most everyone is disgusted by the idea.) However, on an average day, there will be approxmiately 800 people logged in. I went over to the Carbuncle server and checked it a few days in a row and found that on average they have around 1500 people a day (didn't check a weekend), so potentialy, there may be about 2300 people online at any given time, spiking on weekends.

That's kind of how it used to be back in the old days. I remember once in 2006 when I checked online on a Friday and there was 4000 people online.

Everyone's obssessed with Empyrean weapons anyway and +2ing all their gear, not to mention, camping Turul for Loki Kaftan's. -_-

Tokyo governor is a crazy bastard.

I know nothing about Japanese politics-- fuck, I couldn't even tell you the name of the PM at the moment. And I know that.

Same bullshit, different nation. That's all I know of it.

Not blame so much as give credit.

Pat Robertson tends to get the Bible mixed up quite a bit - often blurring the edges between the Old and New Testament and there's a rather significant difference between the two. These days even most Christians don't take Robertson seriously. He'll probably pull a Falwell before he dies. Oh well, at least Billy Graham can take his integrity to the grave.

There are just little things in the Bible - things like not rejoicing in the iniquity/misfortune of others, for one - Robertson seems to forget about. Graham would pray for the Haiti, Robertson would say it was God's judgment in action.

At the very least, that should tell you which one to take seriously as a human being.

Well this was unexpected{considering the other things he's said}, but after reports of widespread disgust, Ishihara is being forced to apologize:

Ishihara “Sorry” for Saying Quake Victims Deserved It

“I deeply hurt the victims, as well as the people of the capital and the nation [...] I withdraw my remark and I am deeply sorry for this.”

“As the head of the administration, my use of a phrase like ‘divine punishment’ without sufficient elaboration was lacking. I am deeply sympathetic to the miserable and dismal plight of the victims.

As Tokyo governor I will do my very best to relieve the plight of these victims.”
As if he actually means anything of this{most of his words were still poorly chosen}, since he being forced to do so. This of course must be some kind of way to save what little face he may have remaining to help his campaign. Hopefully now though, he'll be completely ignored by the public ~ never again to step foot in office.

I'm starting to feel like Japanese is just not a very thought-out language.

They keep miscomunicating, reminds me of SE's own lack of communication skills

I know its the people not the language...but damn.

I dunno how much more elaborate "divine intervention" needs to get.

Polite Japanese is one of the most bitchy languages you'll ever come across. I've been reading a lot of it lately (because it's what you use to talk to customers, and there's been a lot of "because of the earthquake...." notices), and it gets just plain ridiculous. Whereas English has something like "We ask for your ...", Japanese has something like "We raise humble sayings of our wish for your...". You could speak many English sentences in the tme it takes just to tack on a polite ending to a japanese one.

Didn't they teach in Japanese Kindergarten that you're supposed to think before you speak? Talk about the proverbial foot in the mouth.

I also think that some people tend to forget that we were born with two eyes and two ears and only one mouth instead of one eye one ear and two mouths for a reason. lol Mother Nature's way of subltely telling mankind to "see and listen twice as more often than you speak." Just my philosophical opinion. heh

Seeing and hearing in stereo not ringing a bell? Surely, eating in stereo isn't quite as important.

We used to laugh at that with bad dubs of Godzilla movies. The sentence would be done and the persons lips would keep going. It was like a simple sentence took them twice as long to say. Makes me want to go watch some old Godzilla....
