Nothing is Klassier than pointing out to someone that you are blocking them. It's like shouting LALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU! when in reality they are loving the attention it gets them.

The clothes, absolutely, but I haven't gotten any in a while so I'm cool with it.

                Wait, what?

                          There ya go.

Also ... uh ... poorly geared basically = bad. Because there is a difference between "hasn't gotten the drop yet but wearing the next best thing" and "wearing something because it's pretty/I like dex because it's a purple stat and purple is my favorite color/I'm trying to optimize so I don't have to swap gear"

Another annoyance of mine (better off in the Pet Peeve thread?) is the misuse of "elitist". I'm a little fuzzy on how the word came to be, but it had something to do with popular agreement of the majority. Haste contributes to the performance of your job better than most other attributes (fact!). That is something the majority of players have come to accept. So when people are telling you that you should wear Haste over some other attribute, it is indeed "elitist".

But people use the word almost as a substitute for "Nazi". It's happening a lot over in the Official Forums. There is no shame in being an elitist honestly. It's also used a lot almost as an antonym for "fun". As if people who play the game for hours every day and have the best of the best gear aren't having fun at what they do. Actually, I'm pretty sure they have loads of fun playing this game.

You know what is not fun? Some feel-good yuppie coming onto my discussions and telling me my definition of "fun" is wrong because its not the same as their definition of "fun" (opinion!). Or telling me that, because I know what gear goes where, that I must be some basement dweller who never goes out, with no life, and has no hobbies beyond my curmudgeonly existence on Final Fantasy XI.

...besides, anybody who knows me knows I'm far from the "elitist" stereotype. I have little endgame experience. I hated dynamis (but I loved limbus). I did Campaign as a daily routine. And I refused several offers to join a Salvage group. Not because I don't think these things are worth doing, but because I simply didn't care to do them. But I didn't begrudge people who did like these things.

Oh, I agree, it's being thrown around like a beach ball in that thread. I'm definitely one of the types people would agree is an elitist, though, in that I don't take any bullshit and I find it very hard to excuse even the smallest ounce of stupidity. In both playstyle and gear choices. Then again, look what LS I was in. (hint: it's in my sig) We're notorious for being elitist, incredibly demanding, extremely selective as far as members, and a lot of people hated us for it.

So yeah, I agree with what you say, I just know that I fall under the banner of elitism.

I've had that disagreement with people a lot of the time. There's nothing wrong with playing the game the way you want the play. HOWEVER, when you join up with other people, "the way you want to play" doesn't take precedence anymore, unless you're leading the party.

This game has been around for a long time. People have figured the math out, and those areas where it's still uncertain have people working on it. It's not hard to find out what gear works for what situation. The information is all available to you, if you take a few moments to look for it. So there really isn't any excuse for actively choosing to be sub-optimal.

If you haven't managed to acquire gear that you need? That's understandable. Murphie was a pretty good RDM, but he didn't have any relic or limbus gear, not to mention stuff that was added after. That said, I had everything that I could reasonably acquire on my own available to me. I had sets for various situations, and I tried to do my best in everything that I did. If someone had a suggestion regarding gear or even playstyle that would help me out, I was more than happy to listen to it. I certainly have never assumed that I know everything I need to know about this game. So, was I a gimp RDM? I dunno. I'd say I wasn't. And most people I knew would say the same. Was I optimal? No, but was I optimal in regard to the opportunities I'd had in the game? Yes.

I guess what I'm trying to say is - there's nothing wrong with wanting to be "optimal" and have others you play with strive for the same. This game, despite it's recent "easy mode" adjustments, has a lot of time-sinks and challenges to it. Doing what you can as a player to lessen the time and frustration (I hesitate to use the word difficulty) involved in these situations is a good thing.
