Oh great, just in time for me to already be out for the weekend going to a con, and I'm going to another one the week after. They'll probably shut it back down on April 3 or something.
Knowing SE, the client is probably hard coded to connect to one specific server that they used while they were beta testing, and that code is so deeply embedded in other systems somehow that they'd have to start over from scratch to change it.
Not exactly, but during the data center move a couple weeks ago, I was able to tell that apparently the client only does a DNS lookup once after you start it up. I couldn't log in again until I completely quit out of the POL client. Which I didn't actually do until the next morning because I refused to believe they would do something so silly.
It's good to see they're bringing stuff back up. Now I'm interested to see the QQ threads about how people's plants died and WHY OH WHY SE COULD YOU NOT SAVE MY GRAIN SEEDS.
I'm a little concerned about my campaign medal, but I renewed it a couple days before the shutdown, and then did a few thousand XP of campaign battles, so I'm at least partly covered.
The good news is I'll have 40+ more stones. The bad news is I already had 500, so it won't matter much. But at least I have more time to burn in Abyssea for the sake of skillups. Go go dagger PUP! Gotta get them amber lights!

actually from my understanding, the Tokyo region had been cut from 40GW to 30GW of power. As of earlier this week, that was up to 34GW, and yesterday 37. In other words, the blackouts aren't being implemented in as many places or as often. Power is still being removed from many nonessential functions, such as lighting and elevators (the ADA would be crying) as part of conservation, but I think at some point it's more of a show of unity and support than it is because it's actually required for the sake of not losing vital power.
Also, TEPCO has stated their aims to make sure that trains don't lose power (so that transportation is somewhat reliable, although they're operating on reduced schedules)-- this also means that certain areas don't lose power, even when their regions do (which is why my house, for example, loses internet access but the power stays flowing). I'm sure they have some kind of emergency support for hospitals in place.

Airports, TMP, government, harbor ... many, many things that would want uninterrupted power. The plants (4 so far?) in Fukushima has been written off and that's a substantial amount of power that needs to be replaced. Gas turbines, probably, although you'll need petrol for that. Maybe once off shore drilling takes place in the South China Sea, oil would be much less difficult to transport.
There's no shortage of gas. There is difficulty in transporting it to the places hardest hit by the earthquake and tsunami, but in the metropolitan area nobody is conserving or worrying about gas.
I think it's stupid they even turn on the servers while the situation is so unstable...
It's not like they're hooking their servers up to a nuclear reactor with melting fuel rods or anything. Power is being restored, thus it doesn't need to be conserved as much. Things could change, but there's no reason to believe they will right now.
