    a) Rune words sucked

    b) Diablo 2 has served as a model for billions of features to come.

    c) Let's keep the Blizzard rip-off-ery to an absolute minimum, eh?

    We'll see how this plays out. I'm hoping I can do this just with 2 people -- a level 100 smither and me. And use the Synergy system simply as a means of making sure he doesn't jank whatever he crafts for me after I give up hundreds of thousands in mats.

      Why? If it works, it works. It's a hard pill for some to swallow but WoW got a lot of things right that FFXI didn't. That doesn't mean I love it and that SE should copy everything they did, but give credit where credit's due.

      And just what part of rune words sucked, pray tell? Was it the insane power they could grant, or the relative ease of use? (Yeah OK some runes were just insanely hard to get but it's not like this is a foreign concept to FFXI)

        Yes, but that system to slot could have been a lot more straightforward. Like perhaps a simple NPC fetchquest.
        Go fetch materials A, B and C.
        Add slot(s) to a given piece of equipment.

        What they're presenting instead comes across as an overly convoluted gimmick.

          Aside from having to be ridiculous into the hardcore Diablo online scene to be able to achieve them?

          -Gems are worthless.
          -Using runes for benefits are worthless because you should be making powerful rune words.

          Where's your customization now? Add 3 benefits to a weapon that you want your weapon to perform? Or make a word that gives about 30x the power.

          Similarly, what's the point of neat-o random magic item drops when there are uniques with far superior stats? But that's nothing compared to sets -- you may have X awesome gloves, but you need Y gloves to complete the set and get huge e-peen bonuses (that everyone online has anyway).

          And WHY do I not want this game to play like a blizzard game? Because then it would feel like I were playing a Blizzard game.

          It's obvious, given I still regularly play Starcraft and that I'm at least familiar with Diablo 2, that I'm not anti-Blizzard. I think they're a great company and they always have been.

          But keep Blizzard in Blizzard. S-E needs S-E feel. And honestly, that's usually convoluted out the ass. Not like Sphere Grids were much more than insanely convoluted skill trees, for instance.

          That said, this system probably is about 2 steps longer than it needs to be. Though I think a lot of the complication is the fact that there's a very in-depth "Evolith" system which requires the new in-depth "Synergy" system. We see 2 new complicated systems that will go hand-in-hand and the end result: we freak out at this huge operation.

          Get over it, see how it turns out.

            Blizzard hasn't really even been Blizzard for several years now. The real Blizzard is now called Runic Games.

            Like Atari, Blizzard really only lives on in name and franchises, the people that made it what it was are gone. Kinda because they like freedom to do as they like rather than be slaves to the whims of Activision.

            Also, lots of games borrowed ideas from other games and there's no harm in citing them, but don't expect companies to outright say where they got the idea. More often than not, there's still an SE spin on it.

            SE still hasn't added EXP to standard quests, they just made FoV instead. That's where the difference lies for FoV, really. Plus it would have been really, really complicated to go back and add EXP into every last quest now. Perhaps not so much with missions, but then, SE added them to CoPs and it hasn't exactly proven to be much of an incentive.

                Yeah I was just going to add that my Perfect Topaz Armors and Perfect Diamond Shields would like a word with you...


                That was one of the things that made Diablo II so damn awesome; sure by the highest levels the majority of gems start to lose their appeal (except the aforementioned pair) but in the early game, sticking a few rubies you found into your armor as a Sorceress can save your ass big time. Or conversely a Barbarian can use Sapphires for extra MP to throw out a few extra skills.


                Easily outclassed by better stuff as you go along? Yes. Useless? fuck no.

                And yeah BBQ, I'm still mad as hell that they joined with Activision and while I do agree with Marcus from Invisible Walls (amazing show btw over at Game Trailers) about boycotting them, I sadly just can't say no to Star Craft 2. I am however holding out for some kind of discount bundle for buying all 3 versions. Gotta say though, I (and many others) was some pissed when that douche bag released that statement about only making games if they can milk it for sequel after sequel to make as much money as they can;

                That's a real fucking great attitude to have in a creative industry like video games. Guess we can forget about any more new IPs for the foreseeable future. In that respect, I would join in a massive boycotting of the company but it won't happen because there are too many people who will happily just buy Modern warfare 2 and any other crap they put out (Which again makes me feel bad about wanting star craft 2 god damn it )

                  What has been said, is said, but hell, I am saying it again..... gems worthless? hell no -.-

                  This new system will be nice, but like others have said, WTF on making it complicated, and yes its complicated.

                  There should be no reason why we need other people to synth with, in order to make stuff.

                    And like others have said: WTF with whining about a system you haven't used because apparently you can't handle more complexity than "Put Stat A on Equipment B."

                    Wait for it to come out, then start crying about how complicated it is.

                      I don't think the issue is that it's complicated. Complexity with purpose is fine. What's been presented is being perceived as being complex for the sake of being complex.

                        but if it was only "Put Stat A on Equipment B.", then it would be fine, but what we have been givein so far in info, makes it out to be something way different.

                        First you have to get a group together, then each person does "something" to keep the synth from failing. That is what I am getting out of the info right now.

                        Now if its just normal synthing but as a group, then that's fine,annoying you have to get a group together, but still fine.
