    Jul. 28, 2009 20:00 [PDT] From: PlayOnline
Notice of New Security Features for PlayOnline

We would like to take this opportunity to inform you that we will soon implement a security feature for your protection known as The Payer Authentication Service (3-D Secure). This will be implemented on July 29 at around 2:00 (PDT) after the scheduled registration server maintenance. You can activate these services now at the below URLs:

Visa customers: Visa USA | Global | Error - Page Not Found
    MasterCard customers: www.SecureCode.com

All customers are encouraged to activate the appropriate service beforehand to avoid any issues once the services are implemented. Anyone updating their payment information after July 29 will need to register with the appropriate service before the change can be made.

    * Please be sure to check with your credit card company if you are not sure if this service is supported.

    * If you are a current PlayOnline member and your credit card company does not support this service, please contact the Information Center for further assistance. Be sure to have the payment method ready when you contact the Information Center.

If you have any questions about these new services, we encourage you to visit the above URLs. Also, the PlayOnline Information Center can be contacted at the below times for further assistance.

We hope you will find additional peace of mind with these security features.

    Jul. 28, 2009 20:00 [PDT] From: PlayOnline
    Changes to PlayOnline Member Agreement

The following section will be added to the PlayOnline Member Agreement under Article 5 "User Responsibilities" and will take effect as of Jul. 29, 2009:

    5.2(e) Credit Card Authentication.
For your protection, SEI now requires that all new credit cards used for Fees be registered with either Verified by Visa(R) or MasterCard SecureCode(R). Please go to Visa USA | Global | Error - Page Not Found or www.securecode.com to register your credit cards. If you do not register your cards on one of these sites, or if your credit card issuing bank has not signed up with either service, you will not be able to access the PlayOnline services. In such case, please contact your place of purchase for return, refund, or exchange subject to the return and exchange policy of the retailer. If:
    (1) your place of purchase is unwilling to accept returns or exchanges of opened software AND
    (2) you are unable or unwilling to register with Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCard AND
    (3) it has been less than 30 days since you purchased the software, AND
    (4) you are located in the United States or Canada, THEN you may contact PlayOnline Information Center at (858) 790-PLAY (7529) and request a full refund of your purchase price for the Licensed Software, not including shipping and handling charges. Please note that any refund is discretionary and will be contingent upon SEI's receipt of the complete Licensed Software package and confirmation that your credit card is not compatible with either system.

The PlayOnline Member Agreement can be found under "Rules & Policies" on the FINAL FANTASY XI official website or from "Rules & Policies" within "Service & Support" on the PlayOnline Viewer. Please read them carefully and make sure you understand them before you play the game.

Fine time to spring this on people, with a new billing cycle right around the corner. Seems a lot of people hearing about this are complaining that their banks don't support this at all. I haven't even had a chance to check mine yet.

Close reading of the announcements (and some info people have been getting from the information center) suggests this is going to grandfather in everyone's current payment info and credit cards; you just won't be able to change your payment info until you have a qualifying card...

    Re: POL payment method change

Can't say I agree with this decision, a lot of cards can't be registered with this program, and with how helpful (not) their customer service is, I don't see it working out for a lot of people.

I'm sure someone would say, "Well just go get another card," that's not exactly easy. If your credit sucks, you can't get another card, and trust me that is the case for a lot of people. I can't get a credit card, trust me. I use a prepaid card from a reputable national check-cashing chain, and I bet you my left asscheek it won't work with SecureCard.

I just don't think it's really right for them to start requiring something that a lot of banks/companies aren't using yet, thereby screwing over a lot of their customers. Yeah, some people whose account info does not need changed will not be affected, but everyone's card will expire eventually, and that's when it's going to become an issue.

I don't know why this was necessary. They've already banned people over what they call "fraudulent" card usage when the names on their cards and their accounts matched, among other retarded reasons for banning that had nothing really to do with breaking the ToS. This is just going to cause more useless bans, I can feel it.

Step in the wrong direction, IMO. Will (again) cause more hassle than it's worth when people will be unable to access their accounts.

      Re: POL payment method change

I know when I buy stuff from newegg with my Visa, the "Verified by Visa" thingy pops up and I have to enter my password to my credit union. That is the only site that I've actually seen it work since technically my card isn't registered.

It would be hilarious (not) if I was completely unable to play anymore after this update due to some burocratic crap.

But I doubt that would be the case. Either way I'll have to do the research before I can even think about /tarupanic about it.

PS > This only applies to changes made to you credit card info right? So as long as you don't make changes you shouldn't be affected by any issues in case your bank doesn't support it.

Edit > As expected it doesn't look like my bank supports this or is even aware of it.

          Re: POL payment method change

Yeah, this one's gonna be a bit painful. I've checked both of my credit cards and my debit card....basically, SNAFU.

I got ahold of Visa's customer support and inquired about an issuer of a visa card who was offering "verified by visa" and was essentially told to check your own card(s) and if they don't work, start calling visa card issuers to see if they offer the service....hell, throw me a bone here.

So for Durahansolo, who issued you your visa? I'd like to check there first.

Edit: Because I can't spell Durahansolo w/o putting a space in there somewhere.....

But yeah if SE does something stupid* I'm pretty much screwed as no one (and I mean no one) has that service here in MX.

*Like requiring it even if you've been paying with the same card for years.

              Re: POL payment method change

Apparently it's only for PC users, or so they say on BG, so if you happen to know someone who has the game on Xbox or PS2, just go to their house, guest log-in, and change your payment method that way when it comes to it.

Still extremely stupid. Apparently only the PC users need to be inconvenienced. Also, not the EUs, either.

                LOL

You know, I've never even bothered to look at what they take for alternative forms of payment. I'm imagining that it's just short of a testicle or some such. I really have the need to bitch...but what's the point? Everybody here most likely feels the same way. While my interest in the game is dwindling some, I still have friends....and so I'll jump through another fucking hoop, moving my money and debt around in an effort to continue to hang out w/ them. It's going to be really interesting to see what happens to the US ffxi population in the future.

I was thinking that I'd be on their next installment for sure. Given their track record of inane customer service, I'm giving that concept extra thought. They love my monthly installment...but I don't love the frustration of having to deal w/ them...

My local credit union, I've had it for like 2 years I think. Ray I'm gonna be in the same boat as you lol my Visa expires in november IIRC if it doesn't work.

FWIW, First National Bank of Omaha participates in "verified by visa"......and they can accept/decline you online while you wait.

You know, it's possible that if your Visa card bank does nothing, things could still work.

I've had a few domains registered with joker.com for a while now, and a couple of years ago they started doing something which is supposed to be a security verifier, but all that it does is pop up a blank window that immediately disappears. This may be what happens if your bank doesn't support the verifier.

But this is SE we're talking about here, so you can trust them to come up with a way that makes it fail even when you do everything right.

Which is why I opted for a shitty CC. At least I know I won't be using it for anything other than jumping through the flaming hoop of fecal matter.

...and you're right here....this is SE, and it will (most likely) fail. Odds are, I'll get perma'ed for changing from my non-secure card to my verified card because this will be the second time that I've changed my CC info in the last month....

I swear, if this fails, fuck 'em. They can abuse someone else.

Those of you who can just go out and get a credit card are really lucky. I don't even apply for them anymore, because I already know the answer.

                          THANKS, EX-HUSBAND!

So yeah, guess it's good I decided to quit when I did, at least I don't have to be disappointed when my only card (and absolutely only card for the forseeable future) doesn't work.

In some respects you're right. As I was typing that, I was thinking about you and the other players that weren't going to be able to make SE's wonderful new requirements. It pisses me off. I wonder about a couple of my friends that I haven't spoken to yet.
