I was considering being a dick about this, but it's the Internet which isn't exactly clear. My "no reason to stop bitching about how BLM needs an update" bit was a joke. Because BLM and SMN problems are all i've been reading since it was announced there would even be a July update.

I don't really blame you Aks. I'm mostly still in this game for the missions, the few friends I have in-game, and to pull out some crazy numbers or guides every now and then. The more I play this game the more its shortcomings become obvious; but I think that applies to just about anyone.

Honestly I think too many things about FFXI were fucked from the get-go, but a combination of being totally new at this MMO thing, and fans being blinded by their own fandom (happened to me, at least), kept all these things "covered up" until we can't ignore how annoying they are a couple more years down the line. I don't think SE can do much to salvage it. It's all up to each individual's circumstance and perception of the game now, in my opinion.

I know. I am tired of seeing about Blm, and Smn wanting updates all the time as well. SE isn't going to update them unless they actually are complained about enough to SE, not on the forums. SE needs an official forums, or complaint thread that they can read to see what the players want, not what they want to put in.

They do, every update. Then people blow through it in 5 minutes and go back to whining about Dynamis drop rates or how X job can't get 20k/hr. Simple things that are not timesinks don't keep people occupied for long because that's what timesink means. Remember CoP missions? I thought they were a lot of fun, but a lot of people bitched about them being - you guessed it - timesinks.

I think you should seek professional help for depression. Seriously. Because you are taking a highly negative view of *everything* and that is a real symptom of depression.

Yes, the augment system does not automatically give you chocolate-covered ponies (well, except for the addon augmented items). I kind of wish they would add an augment-removing NPC that would let you try again without buying another item (in general, not just for the pixie quests), but it would undermine their purpose of giving crafters something to do (since most people are maxed out on crafting points, so that doesn't suck up any excess gear anymore). Augmenting is a gamble that does not always pay off, and if you don't like that, there are about five zillion other kinds of content that offer different rewards.

Or you could just apply persistence and keep doing it until it *does* pay off. One khroma ore from ISNM or mining would pay for over a dozen (NQ) errant houppelandes with prices on my server. I don't know if out of those dozen you would get something better than what's shown in the screenshot - almost certainly you won't get something better than Morrigan's or other gear from genuine endgame content - but you would almost certainly get something better than off-the-rack, which if you were going to wear one anyway, is better than nothing. Whether it's worth the effort, of course, depends on what else you were going to do with your time.

Some gear is so cheap that trying a dozen times to get one good augment still doesn't look like much of an expense compared to the amount NINs, RNGs, and CORs piss away every day.

Obviously trying to augment haubys or scorpion harnesses or vermys or peacock charms is a much bigger gamble that you should only take if you're so filthy rich that you don't mind having to get another one and try again, but so what? Some people *are* that rich and the rest of us were getting along fine without any augments at all - we can either augment cheap stuff or just ignore the system and keep campaigning in Xarcabard[S]. (Speaking of which, augmenting AN gear would also be a gamble, but you *can* earn back a piece that gets an unfavorable augment, if you do enough campaign. I'm not sure if I'll try that or not, but it is an option for people with enough time and AN on their hands. Theoretically that applies to almost everything, even mission rings/earrings, which you could drop and redo the fight if you got a fail augment.)
Defeated: Maat, Divine Might, Fenrir, Kirin, Cactrot Rapido, Xolotl, Diabolos Prime, Kurrea, 9/10 Dynamis Bosses (missing Tav), Promathia, Proto-Ultima, Proto-Omega, 4 Jailers, Apocalypse Nigh, 6/6 Nyzul Bosses

how could the addons be disappointing..... -.-

you get a nice little story, then at the end you get some armor that you can customize the way you want it...... and thats disappointing?

and besides I find augmenting fun, I tried it on my lifebelt last night..... and uummm... well I sold it to an NPC ;p but I be damned, I am willing to try it again ^.^

Not really called for. If you can't argue your case without trying to undermine the mental state of another poster then just don't bother. There are many issues with FFXI, just like other MMOs on the market, there isn't a perfect one no matter how much you or anyone else tries to paint it. Sure, disenchanted players venting their spleen about FFXI when they've supposedly found a new and amazing game gets old but don't sugarcoat a turd and try to pass it off as a popsicle. The majority of the people posting on this thread have played this game for years and are aware of its shortcomings and its strengths so please give it a rest with the tired fanboi-level propoganda about how the only limiting factor in the game is the player.

IIRC WoW actually has an Enchanting profession specifically for modding items?

It does, but its considered as a "Craft", which is actually fairly nice. When I played the game, I would be able to craft armor/skin animals, and I'd have the guild that I was in enchant the armor I crafted for me if some one was online when I was crafting gear and so on.

They really haven't added anything that's really piqued my interest in the last few updates, it's been all about spending time with my friends. Now that most of them have moved on, it's just not the same, and SE hasn't made anything really super OMFGWOW that has made me want to stay.

Why not just wait until all of WotG is released then come back to finish it then? Personally it would be the hell out of me to leave a story unfinished, which is why even if I hate a particular RPG I try to at least finish it off (Infinite Undiscovery... ugh)

I considered that. I have no idea when that will be though! And I don't want to keep paying if I'm not going to be playing.

It's a business.. and in business, in order to make the most profit you aim for the largest percentage of your market. People who have all the equipment they want from Sky/Sea/Dynamis/Limbus/ZNM/Assault/Nyzul Isle/Salvage number less than those who do not.

Still waiting for the fact to click that FFXI has been timesink after timesink ever since it was released, and how old is the game now? 7 years? 8 Years? That's a long time for a game to be active and having to meet the demands of elite players that want the game to be made thier way.

I'm not a game programmer, so I don't try to tell anyone how a game should be programmed. This game has been based off random chance ever since it was created.... people quit because their personal situation changes, not because the game continues to be the way it was originally programmed.

I don't think some of you are understanding my stance on the augments.

Partially, it was the fact that they made it seem (back when it first came out) like you'd have a choice on augments. Not that you'd just get thrown some air resist and bam, now you can't sell your item. When I found out how it really was, SE's original statements seemed very misleading. Perhaps that was poor translation, but in seven years or so of running a game, that's something that you'd probably think they might have on lockdown, you know?

As for the timesinks. They've done so much to make this game easier over the past year or so, and that's really great. It doesn't make me bitter that they are doing it now after I've done most of what I need to do. I just think that it sucks that a lot of times, I can't just log in for a few hours and actually accomplish something, I actually have to play for closer to six to actually get anything done. That's partially a community failure, partially a failure with the game itself. There are very few things you can do by yourself in FF. Granted, there are more now than there were before, but still. Sometimes the hardest part of playing this game is that you depend so heavily on other people for everything. And when you can't find the people because "I've already done that," or "I'm busy," or whatever, it really sucks. God help you if you joined the game late. Good luck getting missions done. People have changed in this game. It has shifted, no matter what anyone says, to a "Hey, sure, I'll help you out, let me AH this real quick," to, "I'm too busy to be bothered with you, find someone else to do it." This is why my Nyzul disc still sits at floor 21, and I'm 22/50 assaults for Captain (if I remember correctly, I honestly haven't checked in months). It's why I have had the 35 Marduk body for months, because no one wants to just form a pick up and run up to the boss in Arrapago. (But let's farm some QQTH for the Macha's Coats, right?) Even if you try to set up a run for something you need yourself, finding people to do it with is nearly impossible. I could farm for months all by myself to afford that Marduk body, but when the end comes and I can't get anyone to go do a boss run with me, what good has that done me?

I was glad to hear that solo content was going to have some play in XIV. Thank god, seriously. The ultra dependence on others in this game has made it so difficult to enjoy at times. And like I said, they did add some things to improve that, but there's still not a whole amazing lot of solo content to enjoy in FFXI. I feel for the casual players, because I was someone who would play for more than 12 hours a day and still couldn't get shit done. I don't think this is SE's fault entirely. The community has shifted. And if I can't log in for three hours and feel like I've not wasted my time, what is there to play for? Just log in and chat? I can do that outside of FFXI, and for free.

I would really love if there was some nice fun solo content. FoV is fun and actually probably the best thing they could have done in this respect. I've synced with my mule many times just to level something and get a bit of tabs/xp/gil. But it's seriously one of the only things they've done where I can be solo and feel like I've done something with my time, and that's not the only thing I want to do ever, lol. I wish there were more great stuff like that.

SE making the game more casual friendly will be good for future generations even though it's too late for me.

After I leave Vana and join the rest of my friends in heaven... I mean in XIV, hopefully a new generation of players will fill the void left on XI. d(^^d)

SE could lower their fees to keep XI competitive (while making it easier for older players to keep their XI accounts active) but I have no idea how MMOGs usually handle this kinda stuff.
