Re: Square Enix Security Token Release Date Details (03/31/2009)

I'm more of the mindset that they're giving a HUGE advantage to people who buy this thing. The Tidal Talisman was cute and all, but it didn't give those players a huge advantage, it gave them a minor one every three days. And that turned out not to be worth $50.

To not have access if you don't spend the money is really not fair. I know it's not that much money, but I live in a universe where money is very VERY tight, sometimes I have to come up with interesting solutions to be sure that my card has the money it takes to play this game. (Mostly because my check is RETARDEDLY slow in arriving here.) I'm just saying that really there very well may be people who can't afford it. Teenagers who use their parents' credit card to play the game, but don't feel right asking for an extra $10. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that asking my parents for money was a big no-no. And getting a job right now kinda sucks. So it could very well be about the money, as ridiculous as that sounds, which then makes it an unfair advantage.

The fact that it's only $10 alleviates that somewhat, but still, it's there. Some people will not be able to afford it. I'm not one of them.

However, I don't want to use this thing. It will be a HUGE pain in the ass. I d/c constantly due to the graphics issues on my laptop, some days I will d/c 7-8 times in 20 minutes. Do you know how annoying it is go through POL that many times a day, let alone have to find a new password every time? I hope that we are able to get our 80 slots and deactivate it if we so choose. Yes, I know. That's my risk. I'm okay with that.

It really does suck that I won't be able to use CK's account, either. I typically don't ask him first, because the only times I use it are when he's asleep or not home, and for him, the only time he uses mine is when I'm asleep or at class. Both of those times are not convenient to wake someone up and ask their new password. No, we don't live together. Perhaps some day we could, if the economy would stop sucking long enough for either of us to get a job, but for now we deal with not living together, which will make this more of a hassle. And to whoever said I should stop sharing my information with him ... why? I trust him more than I trust my parents.

I really do get what SE is trying to do here. They want us to use this thing. So they made something OMFG awesome that everyone in their right mind is going to want, but what they don't see is what a disadvantage that places anyone who chooses not to get it. PS2 and 360 users probably don't even need this thing, but they're gonna want the 80 spots ... how is that fair?

I mean seriously, I want the 80 inventory spots but I wasn't exactly planning to buy the token because of the reasons above. Now, I pretty much have to, and that kinda pisses me off a little.

Yes and no. Yes, it should be obligated for everyone. No, people shouldn't be forced to buy it. It should be included in the case, same as the manual and the disks. It should be included in the price of digital downloads.

If you really don't mind paying for features, I suppose that's the path FFXI will go down. But if you wouldn't pay $10 just to have expanded inventory, this should worry you.

What's the big deal about "PS2 limitations?"

Everything is server side. Get your heads out your asses.

Awesome item, I was going to get it anyway, as many people have already stated.

lol I meant plugging the controller charger in the back and the Token in the front, but yeah the controller charger in the back would look kinda silly and you'd lose about a foot of cord. My play & charge system doesn't charge as well as it used to, so I bought the one that plugs into the wall outlet and lets me charge 2 at a time. I'd say get a USB hub and put it in the front, that way you could hook up all three to the front of the 360.

This thing doesn't look like a USB device to me. It's just a keyfob. You push the button, it displays the code, you type it in. There's no USB connector sticking out anywhere in the picture they show, and I don't see any line where it'd be split for a cap to come off and reveal one.

To everyone hopping for a ride in the Whambulance:

You could just, you know, not buy it.

Because well, you've been getting along fine with your current inventory.

I only read posts thru page 3...

And on page 2, Feba makes a great point (i know, wtf):

It's horribly unbalanced and destabilizing at best, and a slippery slope to paying for updates (not expansions. updates. WHMs, do you want to pay to be able to use your new spells?) at worst.
This is nothing more than SE's "legal" RMT. They've spent countless hours and resources eliminating RMT, only to turn around and do it themselves. I think the security token is a good idea, in essence, and I think a lot of people should get this because they are too stupid to live without it. But charging money for in-game rewards is RMT, and something I wont do. Not out of principle or because I'm arrogant: because I refuse to pay more money for a video game I'm already paying for simply to get an advantage. Never bought gil because exchanging my real world money for pretend money is retarded. And I won't buy this because exchanging my real world money for pretend storage space is retarded.

It's asinine to me that all this time we can't have more gobbiebag/MH/ML space because of certain "limitations," but just like that, give SE money, and those limitations go away.

This would be no big deal at all if FFXI took on the Korea-style MMO, free2play with RMT for other items and whatever. But we all pay a monthly fee for a service, and to be forced topay even more on top of that to continue enjoying that service doesn't sit well with me. I can live without 80 more inventory.

It still needs to be loaded into memory for you to do anything to/with it. However, this is one way to get around that. As this isn't your normal inventory, to load the extra satchel you can unload the contents of your inventory and load the contents of the satchel into the newly freed memory.

Again, what cases? What Discs? The once a year bundles that are bought mainly by new players who might not play past the first 30 days? There's a brilliant idea, increase the cost of the initial game to help drive off new players! And what of people who buy it online, where there is no case or disc, should they also spend more money on something they might not play past 2-3 months? Being a seperate option prevents problems with new, short term players trying out the game because it keeps initial costs down. And throwing in a massively useful bundle in with this security key will help entice long time players who don't mind "risking it" to actually buy the item and protect themselves better. And unless SE can come up with far more easy-yet-reliable rl security items to bundle in with massively useful ingame bonuses, I doubt this will become common place. Sure they'll prolly sell more junk like the Tidal Talisman with ingame trinkets, but that's a completely different situation.

Then don't buy it for the ingame rewards, buy it because you think the Token is a good idea and a nice way to protect your long term investment. The in-game bonus is a freebie, an incredible freebie, but free none the less. You're paying 10 bucks for the Security Token, which INCLUDES shipping and taxes, the inventory space is just an (incredibly powerful) addition to help entice those who were on the fence...or even close to the fence. SE wants you to get this item, not because it'll make them some massive profit, but because it'll help both SE and the Players have more secure accounts and reduce theft. At this point in time, there's little reason not to buy this token....because SE are dicks.

Re: Square Enix Security Token Release Date Details (03/31/2009)

I'm still going to buy it.

But I don't like it. I'm pissed SE basically forced me to use this, because I desperately do need the space. (I have eleven characters, two of which I actually play.) Bard is inventory rape +10,000.

Why not add the inventory in the expansion? Where it would have kind of fit? New content - new mog storage options. Winner. Would have made perfect sense. And something that everyone needs if they have more than three jobs at 75 and fully geared. I don't know how some of our Maat's caps do it, to be honest. I can barely make WHM RDM BLM partially geared SMN, sort of geared SCH, and BRD work, with WAR gear on my other account because that's all gear that isn't shared with any other job and I don't need constant access to it. With 80 extra slots, I could hold my WAR gear all the time and level it at will, not when I feel like clearing the space to get it and trading all 30+ pieces of it. (Yes, that is really why I don't level WAR. I'm too fucking lazy to get my WAR crap out and just level the damn thing.)

So yes, you could argue that I've lived "just fine" without the extra 80 spots so far, and by "just fine" you could say "struggling, but getting by." Do I think there may be another 80+ option in the near future? Um, no? I know how SE is, they hate us. They're not gonna expand again so soon after doing this one. And with new gear constantly coming out, with mog bonanza balls, and all sorts of other useful trinkets, how can anyone who plays at near maxed space (like so many of us here do, I KNOW YOU DO!) resist a way to get ... 20% more? (math might be wrong forgive me) It's a kick in the face. I wasn't gonna buy this before, but I am now. Because I need the damn space, and I'm not sure if SE is gonna give me another way to get it without this token. That's bullshit.

I do hope I can activate it, use it a few times, and then turn it off.

If not, well, fuck you for the inconvenience this has caused, SE. ><

I agree Aks WAR is my main, and I was playing BLU and BST before I stopped to take a break a few months ago. The exact reason you mentioned is the same reason why I skip leveling sometimes. If I'm BLU then I have to send all my WAR gear to a mule and then reverse it when I want to play is WAR. I think I only have 60 spaces in my Inventory so 120 spaces would be wtfpwn. As soon as I do my last two gobbie bags I'll have 70 with + 10 to the satchel giving me 140 so +20 total spaces!!! That's a whole damn outfit and when I get 160 that's another +20 so basically gear for 2 extra jobs besides WAR. I can carry all my Great Axes at the same time!!!! Foolkiller will no longer be lonely.
