Fields of Valor Beckon You! (11/28/2008)
The much-awaited December version update will see the introduction of "Fields of Valor," a brand new in-game system that will allow players to engage in light-hearted yet rewarding adventuring, regardless of whether they are bereft of company or part of a hulking party.

Click here to find out more.

Fields of Valor Beckon You! (11/28/2008)

    Development Concept
Ever had a bit of time to spare, but not quite enough to participate in a normal leveling party? Or for a change of pace, just wanted to chill out and indulge in some light-hearted gaming with friends and fellow linkshell members?
If you answered in the affirmative to at least one of the above questions, then Fields of Valor is just what the doctor ordered. For a small fraction of your time (friends optional), you can enjoy fuss-free yet rewarding adventuring. Get more out of each Vana'dielian day with Fields of Valor!

    How to Play
Using a "Field Manual" located in any of several areas will bring up a menu from which players can select a training regime of their choice. After that, it's just a matter of venturing forth and slaying the enemies listed in the regime. Those wishing to enjoy Fields of Valor in a party simply need to make sure they all select the same training regime.

    Rewards
In Fields of Valor, the spoils and experience acquired in the natural course of slaying monsters will be yours to keep. In addition, upon successful completion of each training regime, players will be further rewarded for their fortitude with experience and a corresponding amount of gil, as well as "tabs"—points exclusive for use in Fields of Valor. These points can be exchanged for items and services that will surely benefit adventurers roughing it out in the field.

How useful this is will depend on the details - which zones can you use it in, what monsters are you asked to kill, how big are the rewards - but it looks like it has potential.

One nice thing about evaluating any new system like this now - if you want to do it with friends, you don't have to all be the same level anymore.

Interesting that it provides gil - does that indicate that SE is concerned about deflation? (Past chocobos are priced in AN, already an unprecedented step to avoid extending one of the game's longest-standing gil sinks - and that's on top of the price cuts for Dynamis and Limbus and the upcoming elimination of bazaar tax. This is all apparently an attempt to balance the closing of some sell-to-NPC exploits such as rusty caps that flooded the economy with gil a few years ago.)
Defeated: Maat, Divine Might, Fenrir, Kirin, Cactrot Rapido, Xolotl, Diabolos Prime, Kurrea, 9/10 Dynamis Bosses (missing Tav), Promathia, Proto-Ultima, Proto-Omega, 4 Jailers, Apocalypse Nigh, 6/6 Nyzul Bosses

I am curious if any of these will be soloable. Reading it seems to say that you need at least a couple of people. Hopefully they will have a couple that can be soloed. Most of my downtime comes from waiting for friends to come on, so that would be an opportune time for this, alas, I am usually alone though.

...regardless of whether they are bereft of company...
Sounds solo to me. It seems like the only real requirement is that you gain XP from what you kill.

Given how much time I already spend doing this anyway, I'm eager to try it out at least. Although much lulz if one of the quests is to kill leeches in Buburimu.

I wonder if this will be much loved by BSTs or if the mobs will not be charmable?

If done right, this would be something very AWESOME for BSTs.

Adventuring around charming stuff sounds like lots of fun.

Yes I love adventuring by myself on my BST, I hope there's also challenging missions in this system and not just light-hearted material, harder stuff, better spoils.

Past Chocos use AN because Gil isn't in high circulation at that point in the timeline. Jeuno's taxes are being removed to help draw more people back to the city. And the price drops in Dyna/Limbus weren't to slow deflation, but because everything had already deflated low enough that spending a Million gil per group or 30k a head was too expensive.

My guess, this system gives out Gil not to counter deflation, but because one of people's biggest problems in this game is casually making Gil. So now they're adding a new system that can be done at any level that not only rewards Exp, but gear and gil as well.

It says many times that you don't need a party but if you want one you can take one.

Now if I'm understanding this right, this event is basically them saying "Go kill X mobs"...and then you go out and kill XX Mobs....but the XP gained only comes from things you've killed? So it's basically killing XP mobs...then getting bonus XP and cash on top of it. I need to see this in action before I judge it.

It is possible they're introducing other gil sinks to counter some of this as well, and just not mentioning it. I'm sure M.M.M. won't be entirely free (in their little fake interview with the moblin, the answer to "Won't it be expensive?" wasn't "No," but "It'll be worth it!"). I also wouldn't be too surprised if they drop the NPC price on various bloods, or make other adjustments like that, and that's not exactly the kind of thing they're going to announce ahead of time.

Given the constant announcements of billions of gil being removed by the STF, it doesn't seem to me that countering deflation is one of their goals just yet.

This is a nice system but i wonder if the mobs are going to be "speical mobs". Think if person A went to the dunes; they are told to kill...leeches, then person B goes to the the dunes and told to kill leeches too. So...is there going to be a fury of everyone in the zone to kill the leeches? Sounds like annoying in that asspect, not a good way to "chill out" or "take it easy" imo. lol

it seems it will be normal mobs you kill, and you can only do it once a in-game-day so that will help with the "OMG every camp same stuff" issue

It's nice to see more low-man stuff that's fun and profitable, and not a total hassle like Assault.

My buddy who's having a horrible time struggling with his 64 BLM will love this!

I think they said they'd only be applying these to mainland areas initially, so they'll probably expand the feature to Outlands and Northlands later one, though Northlands could be included in this update as well.

I think they're just holding out to see how well-recieved the feature is, if its popular enough, there's no reason to not extend it to the RoZ outposts if it will help spread people out.

I like the concept of the feature, though. it seems like SE wants to give players more gil, particularly when you look at this in conjunction with the coffer adjustment and the ability to generate revenue in MMM if your maze is popular enough, not to mention the chests that could lie within there as well.
