I'm sure many people could finish a 24 mile marathon by walking most of it, taking breaks to sit and rest in the shade, etc. If people were allowed to take several days, I'm sure far more people could "complete" a 24 mile marathon than you give them credit for.

    You can take 10 hours to finish a 100 yard dash if you wanted to. However, beating AV isn't like doing a 100 yard in 10 hours. Whether AV is suited to a sprint or to a marathon, either way, you have to excel in either format to beat AV.

    So is it truly easier to excel in a sprinting event than it is to excel in a marathon? I seriously doubt any good sprinter or long distance jogger would be so quick to down play the difficulty of the other style of running.

        It's kind of tragic the amount of tears being spilled over a mob from a four year old expansion. Two subsequent expansions have been released in that time and the thing was still unbeatable. Whoever designed the original encounter failed miserably. Anyone with half a brain and a sadistic streak can design a ridiculously stupid hard mob that requires a set obscure pattern to defeat, the real trick is making it not only possible but engaging, challenging and rewarding. So what if it becomes another Kirin, there will be new content released in time that will require new strategies to be developed in order to defeat them.

          I've been at Kirin fights that last a minute and a half. Sounds like JOL might be on the same track now. /sigh And its sad because it used to be fun. It used to be to have a drop from one of these mobs was an accomplishment. Remember when doing Roc or Simurgh was OMGWOWZORZ? Now when people call them a HNM they get called a noob and told they don't know shit. It's no longer a challange and its no longer fun.

            I think the comparisons are a little quick anyway. No one has gotten past 80% on the 'new' AV yet.

            It's one thing to have secret food effects and latents on gear that we don't know about. It's another to wave it in our faces and tell us we aren't doing it right.

            From start to finish they've handled the whole AV thing about as bass ackwards as they possibly could have.

              I won't deny that. As has been said in previous threads, putting a use to those fucking useless NPCs by giving us a clue would be an example of properly using resources. What they've done, instead, has left a mob unbeatable so they can lol to themselves and claim to the world that "we're the MMORPG that still has things the players can't beat".

              Still, these changes are better than nothing. I'd rather be told I lose after 2 hours than let my slave-driving LS officers try to wear it down over the course of the day. Hopefully, as the content becomes a little more widespread, they'll up drop rates of t4s. Like uh... 100%.

              And JoL/AV... sharing same time? Yeah, that's full of fail.

                Unless there is something that you can do to JoL that affects how AV behaves or whatever.

                Although I will point out that the FFXI Dev team's video of how to beat AV was how long? 8+ hours I think?

                      (And on a different note than the one I'm pondering, I still think that the playerbase is obscenely overpowered in the sense that BtL could even survive an 18-hour go with PW. If that doesn't beg an Utsusemi nerf or something of some sort I don't know what does. Owait, make the mobs weaker instead? Wooosh . . . Maybe not total woosh since they're on timers now, but, what, are you going to put everything on a timer now? Put Genbu on a timer merely to spite RDM/NINs that choose to whittle their time away on an eventual but inevitable defeat of said Genbu, rather than dealing with the job combination itself? I know I'm going to get loads of flack for bashing a fittingly popular "strategy," but I'm just saying, players, especially those with enough time, are just far too powerful.)

                        Wasn't the original "big secret" about AV that his auto-regen would reduce if you killed as many of JoL's pets as possible? If they share the same timer, that would mean you can't use one of the tricks you're "supposed to" without handicapping yourself on time. The design is flawless.

                          On the subject of gear degrading, so far it hasn't been bad at all for me.

                          I took a Lv.73 PLD friend in adamant gear, a 48 RDM, a 41 WHM, a 37 DRG, a 47 DRG (me), and a LV.20 DRK.



                          And we plowed through those mobs for insane EXP.
                          We were killing wights like they were toughs at the most. In about an hour I got to LV.48 and forced myself to leave since I didn't wanna get too underskilled. (Plus I felt like I was cheating.)

                            Going down 20 levels from 60 on AF cost me 13 of my 25 MND, going back 20+ levels with 7 CHR would most likely net you zero.

                            I knew Raydeus couldn't be happy with this system, though. He's always wanted to use high level gear in level capped zones, this update gave him that, they just chose to do it from a balanced perspective. Crazy, I know.
