I think I mentioned that file check thing back on the first ToAU update when I had the same problem. If they haven't fixed it by now...

I think they just need to hop on some more bandwidth or learn to use torrents like Blizzard... My timer keeps jumping around. It keeps telling me:

and the percent done on file 38.dat stays at 72%....

Terrible shame that Ixion's cloak is a cloak... For as a cloak we RDM cannot wear "teh hat" while wearing it so RDM will still want the Dalmy.

Yeah that was happening to me, I got about 730 files Dled, then I just gave up. I'll try again in a few hours, but most likely just wait until morning.

I think those are what Feba calls "Toor In'ts." Obviously a very foreign concept, considering S-E hasn't applied it yet.

I sent them the same e-mail I sent last time. It has 2 basic points:

Point 1: Modify the algorithm of the update process:

1. If there is an existing, recent file catalog, skip to step 4. This check involves touching the update site to see when the new server file catalog was last updated. This is functionally similar to the way your web browser caches web pages.
2. Check the files and create a catalog of files requiring update. If there are no files to update, end the routine.
3. Save the update catalog.
4. Download files linearly from the list, removing them from the catalog after they meet checksum.
5. When the catalog is exhausted, delete it and goto step 2.

Additional: Within the routine, if there is failure at any level, the routine will not fault. It will continue to establish a connection until either (A) the process is manually interrupted (such as by clicking "Cancel") or the routine ends on condition specified above (that all the files are up-to-date). This means that I can start an update LEAVE and not have to worry about the stupid thing not finishing.

Point 2: Implement Torrent protocols to update faster.

Torrenting has already been implemented for WoW, a major competitor and significantly increases overall bandwidth without increasing costs to the content distributor.


I've sent this email 4 times, but nothing ever happens. Perhaps if you'd like, you could send a copy yourself like people do with politicians. ^^

Recursion is basically a simplification process that sacrifices memory and speed for simplified coding. Learn it and then take the next step...

Learn to convert recursive routines into non-recursive ones.

Every routine is like a slightly different, little puzzle. I like recursion conversion. ^^

As well as plenty of other ones; many Korean MMOs use this for example.

I still stand by the idea that the POL client should be able to download the program all by itself, with absolutely zero FFXI required. Sign in to a POL account (GIVE THESE OUT FOR FREE, SE; THAT EXTRA $1 FROM A TRIAL DISK IS NOT GOING TO HELP YOU), go to FFXI, and click play. It then downloads, patches, and installs ANYTHING you don't already have, including FFXI itself. Maybe have a checkbox option for expansions, or base that off content IDs (btw, SE, you should give out free trial registration codes too), but anyway. This makes it very easy to install FFXI from scratch, very easy (and free, which is important) to trial FFXI, very easy to recover an old install, and so on. It also greatly improves the update process; the most recent files could be queued higher for download, which would mean that new players and people who are reinstalling would actually be a significant HELP to bandwidth problems. POL could also run the torrents in the background after they had finished, so whenever someone logs in to check their friend messages they're helping to seed.

Like I've said before, some of the best changes they could make would be so insanely quick and easy.

That sentence hurts my head. I'm only taking Data Structures as an elective. We're still doing Hanoi's Tower and we have to write (Read: Google) a program that'll solve it using 64 blocks.

I'm going to try my hand at updating and see how long it'll tell me the initial run-through will take.

As a WHM I like the extra Shellra V merits a lot considering it can block 25% of magic damage when fully upgraded. Shame that 1) I'm only Lv45 so it will be a long time before I can merit 2) Do people actually merit on WHM?

Not really ... though you can merit the slow way through Campaign and Besieged and whatnot. I've also been getting a lot of merit points from sea and sky farming. Mostly, though, I merit on RDM and use those merits for both jobs.

Like I've said before, I seek on WHM but I don't get invites. And most of the time if I do get an invite, it's from people I know who want me to change to RDM. I think I've merited on WHM twice since I dinged 75 in January.

God, seems like so much longer that I've had WHM to 75. And it's already better geared and merited than my RDM, lawlz.

Though most of my merit invites are from friends or people I've merited with before because the average person putting together a party is going to take a random rdm they don't know over a random whm they don't know for a TP burn.

Saren, I know you're on Hades but I think I've seen you maybe twice on the server. You should bug me sometime if you want a RDM to xp/merit with. I mean hell I prefer WHM, but when I'm on RDM and I have a WHM nearby it's not nearly as annoying being RDM.

Or we could whinja burn.
