    They added access to the past. Garlaige [S] -> Sauromugue [S] -> Maw -> Sauromugue = Behind the 3rd banishing gate solo.

      TGM: The Cavernous Maw for Sauromugue is up on that ledge that you need to get through Garlaige to access. The thing is, you can get through Garlaige Citadel [S] solo, and then return to the present through the Maw.

        You need to go through the Maw initially as stated to get behind 3 (which gets you behind 1).

        However, while in the past stop at the Lycopodium npc in Garlaige Citadel [S] (E-8 on Map 3). Clicking him will unlock a warp in the present GC that will get you up the broken stairs and behind Gate 2 as well. You'll need a certain flower to do it. Carnations are usually the easiest.

            When I first heard about the warp, I misunderstood because I thought it was a way to get up the cliff in Sauromugue Champaign. When I figured out it was inside Garlaige itself, I was a little disappointed.

            That feeling changed when I realized coffers were now completely soloable in GC. ^^

              Well thank you everyone! ^^ I just haven't had the time to explore the past very much so I wasn't aware of this little trick. Maybe if my daughter ever moves out of my house, I'll have time to actually merit and do everything everyone else is. LOL

                They also added these near the cliff in N gusta and on the ledge in Battalia.

                  Yeah, the Gustaberg one actually makes the outpost useful, which is another reason I'm glad about the saved warps.

                    I wonder if SE is losing any customers from any recent games lately...
                    Such a prompt change to the system... yikes.

                      There's also the 3 new shortcuts in the past; you can now bypass the following by trading a flower to the sparkling light in the present after speaking to the lycopodium by the same light in the past;

                      North Gustaberg (where there ramp that bridges the cliffs is)

                      Batallia Downs (by the entrance you have to go through the glaciers)

                      Garlaige Citadel (the broken setps by Gate 2)

                        According to the latest census released a few days ago, still holding at 500k.

                          SE has more recent games than FFXI.

                              Completely agree with this.

                              But, something nags me: There's natural attrition; we lose fellow players all the time. Some of those losses are covered when friends take over accounts. (And when sold through RMT, I guess.) Some are recovered when players who quit earlier return to the game. However, the game must be attracting new blood somewhere to sustain no net customer loss over the last few years.

                              How, though?

                              FFXI has nearly no advertising, as far as I can tell. I've not seen in store promotional material anywhere, much less any media campaign. Heck, about the only ads I can recall were run by one local store in the local newspaper--tiny black and white pictures--one ad for each expansion pack around release.

                              Who are these weirdos coming to find FFXI instead of waiting for S-E to go beg them to join?!

                              yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
                              Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
                              leaving no trace in the water.

                                MMOs are a nomadic genre, people tend to roam from one to the next until they settle on one that suits thier style of play.

                                Some people never find it. They get in the beta sometimes just to say they were in the beta and then move on to the next MMO that won't satisfy them and then the next until they finally find something for them.

                                Sometimes they hype up the lastest MMO, saying it fixes everything that was wrong with the previous one, but given time, this attitude fosters disappointment when they find out the shiny new MMORPG they've been hyping for themselves falls short. So they move on to the next one.
