        Re: Caution on Account Hacking

Recently my account was jacked. heres how it went.

        1. tried to log on POL said incorrect user name or password.
        2. Called SE 2x (bout 1 1/2 hour wait) finally got password reset.
        3. Loged on and guess what ?! Welcome to Kujuta! (Im from shiva).
        4. Freaked out called SE again 2 hour wait and was told to call GM in game. WTF
        5. WAS like 200 in line for GM. it took a long painfull lonely time.
        6. checked the Mail mithra in windy woods and saw the shadow of my SH and specticals goin bye-bye along with my 100k or so gil.(i got off easy i know)
7 While i was waiting i sold some ninja tools to a vendor to pay for a taru warp to quifim.
8 checked AH saw that a SH and specticals were sold by the same char about the same time my account was compermised.
9.did /sea all (that person) and of course nobodys home.
10 went to mog house and waited for GM /cry

Maybe im just paranoid but the name in question is remarkably simalar to someone on this fourm. Rather than risk piss off a hacker id rather let bygones be bygones. Also i did use somepage and real player did update around the same time. o btw im on week 2 of waiting for SE to reply. on week one (cause GM initally told me one week HA!) i tried to log in and a GM chat window came up. All He told me hes was "sorry for the inconvience" and that 1 week was a bare minimum.(kinda sounded like WTF was that other GM talking about saying 1 week).

          Re: Caution on Account Hacking

I just got hacked. It all started from buying a Kraken Club here in the Midgardsormr server. The player I bought the Kraken Club from (who is JP, I am able to speak Japanese) told me that he wants to keep his identity on his main character a secret so he refused my friend invite. I told myself well ok, maybe it's a mule account. Bought the Kraken Club with all my life savings and borrowed gil from rich friends. Monday went by and I was having fun whacking stuff with my new toy. I logged off Beaucedine Glacier to prepare for Dynamis the next day.

Tuesday morning I logged back in and all my non Rare/EX items and all my gil are gone. ON ALL CHARACTERS IN MY ACCOUNT. I called SE and had my account locked. Operator was very nice, he said that it will take a month and not believe that it takes a week to rollback my account to the state that it was before it got compromised.

One of my friends who lent me the gil to buy the Kraken Club felt sorry for me and offered his wife's account since she no longer plays. I'm playing in it right now and says it's ok I don't have to worry about me owing him gil but I have to play his wife's WHM to 75 at least to make up for me being "irresponsible in not changing passwords after making a big purchase". Of course I felt stupid but I never thought of that. A few minutes later after logging in on the account I told my LS my story and they said that I was possibly a victim of a "trade hacker". Meaning a hacker that was able to grab my info when trading me the Kraken Club. Does such a hack even exist that you can get my POL info by just trading me? I'm currently asking them to point me a link to where they find this seemingly ridiculous info, but they said that the Kraken Club seller didn't wanna give his "main character's identity away" is a give-away. Of course I'm innocent and I didn't know anything about it.

So does this form of hacking really exist?

            Re: Caution on Account Hacking

This is a bunch of hogwash. There is no such hack. I've played a lot of MMO's in my day and I've heard the gambit of this type of hysteria. If you let someone stand close to you for over 30 seconds, if you enter into a trade with someone, wearing the guld colors, etc were all ways someone could "hack" your account. It's rubbish.

sorry but trade hacking is a load of BS

played MMOs since Ultima Online, and well, you cant hack that way -.-

5 gil says you have a keylogger or similar form of spyware on your system.

                Re: Caution on Account Hacking

I myself think it's too ridiculous to be true. I already checked my system with Spybot and Ad-Aware, and even have the latest update on Adobe Flash and I haven't even been to somepage or FFXI-Atlas for months now, which is why I wondered how I got hacked.

Anyway I don't mean to cause any hysteria, I was looking for answers but instead I get more and more questions.

does any know how effective the "keypad entry systems" are? i know that some gov and military websites have been using them for awile but its not like the gov is hack proof. also i wasent really conserned about "trade hacking" but only the idenity of the char( mostly likely a mule used once and destroyed) who stole my password. nice idea on changin the password after a big purchase but wouldnt the they still know ur new password if they had a keyloger?

o btw i got my account back. only took 3 weeks or so. i didnt have sign any afidavids or any thing like that. i did notice a 25 dollar charge on my account from when the hacker changed my server. i still have to call SE on that. all i had to do was restore my content ID's and i was back in action.

also no luck on the "mog lottery" just a couple of memwars on one of my mules who cant use it.

                        franzy -

There is no such "Trade Hack". Really. It can't happen. The only way this could happen, is if you connect directly to another player's computer when trading. Which you don't. You connect to the server, and they connect to the server.

Most likely it was just coincidence, and a bad one at that.

smokey99 - grats on getting your account back.

Doesn't sound like much of a friend to me. "Here, you can temporarily use this account. Now, go level WHM to 75."

You didn't, by any chance, ever share any login info with your "friends" in your LS, did you?

And this is exactly the sort of security stupidity that causes this crap.

And yeah, given the fact that you have access to one of his accounts, I'm guessing he has access to yours? Sounds like a great friend. Gets WHM to 75 and all your stuff to boot.

Yeah, and now that I read your post again, this is almost 100% not RMT, if you were able to log into your account without it having been locked first. The first thing a hacker would do is change your password to lock you out of it. This ensures that you won't attempt to log in yourself and thwart their efforts.

It's been a common knowledge (at least with the folks I communicate with) that some of these groups that engage in account jacking using trojans and other virii loaded into various websites get so many successful accounts captured that they literally just log in, do a 3 min strip, send away the money and out. No time to even worry about going back to that account and it's not like they are hurting for that kind of money. So some players have reported that they were fortunate that they only had their immediate in-game cash holdings and maybe a few vendorable things taken from them.

The ones with their account hacked and then "kept" are most likely victims of individuals, loners ... think of the "AOL script kiddies" of the 90s. They could also be people from the same linkshell/guild or possibly even "friends" from real life.
