    Go look closer at deviant art, not just the stuff you think is good. Even if everything on deviant art was good, that doesn't mean that those who play FFXI and would be inclined to enter this contest are going to be any good.

    Face it, just like everything else, most of all art produced is crap.

    Talent = intellectual property imho.

    Both weigh the same. You have the talent and/or skill to make something. Therefore you have ownership of that.
    Until they submit it to this contest.

      I'm talking about FFXI artwork on Deviantart, not just deviantart in general.

      And no, most of the stuff there is at least decent.

        All art is subjective. Just because you think it's crap doesn't mean that everyone does. Conversely, just because you think it's good doesn't mean that everyone does either.

        BBQ and Mhurron are right, though. The rules are laid out for you. It's their intellectual property, you were unlikely to sell this stuff anyway, and no one is forcing anyone to enter. So this is some pretty low-grade unnecessary complaining.

          Somewhat. But nobody is going to argue that a total piece of shit that looks like it was drawn by a five year old is good art.

            Makes me think of that rugrats episode where Angelica chased the babies around which panted the room and her mom called it art. Or that episode of Doug when he becomes a smash hit with just a red doodle or the foot prints of Porkchop chasing a raccoon on the back of a painting of Patti.

            Here's some random good FFXI fan art I found just now;
            FFXI: Everren by ~Saehral on deviantART
            FFXI - Happy Holidays 2004 by *gem2niki on deviantART
            FFXI mithra dragoon by ~breakbot on deviantART

            Nothing of that quaility from last year as I recalled.

              Incorrect! And this can be proven by the *hundreds* of hentai and fan comics that are legally sold by original artists that contain FFXI based content and yet do not pay SE one red cent.

              Now, someone uses that as a base of their own work(fan art). Both parties have equal ownership following the use of what talent is above. But primarily more to the fan artist, due to it being their talent in that work, while still crediting the original owner as to where the subject matter came from.
              Intellectual Property is characters, environments, stories, ideas and such that are protected and copyrighted to prevent others from blatantly copying them. Two artists can draw the same character yet have no claim on that character because it is owned by a third party. That character is Intellectual Property, but the talent used to create that character is not.

              And it is standard practice in officially sanctioned fanart contests from major companies because the company does not want to run the risk of having a picture submitted, using that picture to promote something down the line, then having the original artists turn around and sue the company for using that picture. It's protecting the companies from the artists as it's not always the little guy who gets screwed over.

              Wrong! Infact it even states the *exact opposite* of that in the original announcment.

              Meaning you can do whatever you want with the pic, as long as you don't use it for advertising or outright sell it. A lot of commisioned art works on this principal. And again, they ask for total and complete rights so *you* can't sue *them* if they decide to use the image in some fashion at some point in the future. They're protecting their ass because things like that have happened before and they do not wish to run that risk.

              BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

              Sorry, but that's just funny. There is just as much, if not more, crappy art on Deviant Art then there is good. The contests winners can only be as good as the best piece submitted. And they showed all the submitted art publically on the site.

              Modern art says hi.

              Personally, I see nothing wrong with this contest. The winners are only as good as their submissions and their rules are pretty standard practice in Fan Art contests. Most places you go will have the same bi-line of owning any image or work sent into them so they can they re-use that work however they wish without fear of being sued. As long as they'r giving proper credit to the artists then I don't care if they own it or not. It's a *fan*-art contest, people who submit images do it because it's fun, not because of the potential of making money. And it's free publicity to those who win as everyone in FFIX will know about them.

              Only reason I don't bother joining is because I'm just too damn lazy nowadays to finish any drawing I start. Plus I usually prefer to draw my character, which is a male, and thus not an acceptable entry into this contest (I'm more bothered by the fact there is no guy version of this contest then anything fyi). But maybe if I can convince a few chicks in my LS to pose for the pic...but that would prolly end up being an image more suited for Neko-Sentai then an FFXI fan-art contest...

                    Ya know, come to think of it, does anybody even have a link to the images from the old contest? I mean here we are debating how good (or crappy) they are, but do any of us remember them exactly?

                    Because from what I can remember, the images in the banner they used this time around came from last year's contest...and they look pretty damn good to me.

                      In general, I agree, but not really when you just look at FFXI related work.

                              I had no idea that the term Special Consideration meant winner

                              p.s. Winners are on the first page, everything on the second page is just something that stood out to the judges.

                              p.p.s. And the fact so many people remember that pic existed is proof of it's notability...
