    Re: Official Windower announced at Fan Festival 2007

    Eagerly awaiting this because I only use windower for the... window mode, and i dont want to suddenly be accused of using bots or whatever. Plus i hate the idea of third party software to play FFXI

    By the way people, I would advise everyone not to download any windower updates after they activate the official window mode, god knows what could happen, this is after all a major hit on the existing windower software, who knows whats going on in the heads of those responsible for it.

        What does this even mean? The developers of the windower aren't making a profit from it, so why do they care if SE comes out with their own? Besides, people are still going to use the unofficial version, as they have gotten used to the plugins.

          Re: Official Windower announced at Fan Festival 2007

          This seriously made my day. Finally I can use my second monitor to have the web up while I'm playing. I did this while I played WoW (for the two months I hung in there) and it helped a lot, and even though it's taken forever, I'm ecstatic. Also, when my vent client decides to take a dump on me, I'll be able to fix it WITHOUT logging out. That alone is worth a tear of joy or two to me...

          On a side note, now we'll see how many people REALLY used windower for the windowing alone. I never jumped on the bandwagon, but if SE decides to enforce the third party tools thing as concerns the unofficial windower (since there is one built in now) I have a feeling a lot of people are gonna be PISSED.

            My understanding is that the windower people are currently planning to develop plugins that work with SE's official windower...once they break the code to work it that is.

            An official party TP/Ally MP thing would be cool, but it's not something this game really needs. I gone this far choosing to not use it and have never had problems so I don't think it's that big of a deal.

            As for the SS function, there's always Fraps, which is technically endorsed by SE themselves as both GMs and official contests have stated it was ok to use.

            My guess is that he feels that once SE gives us the official windower, SE may then crackdown on the 3rd pt app one, causing possible suspensions or bannings for simple Windower use.

            *Raises hand* I do. Infact I haven't updated my windower for any other reason outside of SE breaking an older version and specifically removed any extra plug-ins that were built in.

              See, now this is something I could see happening. But the impression I got from his post was that the developers of the windower would do something malicious to the coding or whatever out of pure spite.

                Re: Official Windower announced at Fan Festival 2007

                Hurray.

                I've never admitted it in public before, but I use Windower--with all the plug-ins turned off, and never even tried its macro system. A few features I do use which the offcial Windowed mode probably won't provide:
                1. Frame per second count. I can easily live without this.
                2. Gama change (F11) so I don't get lost in dark places--which I won't need that much w/official Windowed Mode since I don't think S-E would screw it up in the first place.
                3. Pasting in URLs for friends who ask about things. So it'll take a few more seconds, and I'll have to double check what I type... Can live with that.
                4. Screenshots with "high" resolution and chat log. (My LS mates have good humor--lot's of dumb/cool lines need to be saved!) This I'm not willing to give up.

                I guess that means I'll be getting that FRAP-thingie, then.

                p.s. I would really like to be able to type in Japanese in-game, but I'm giving up that idea--no easier way for GMs to know you're using third party tool than to look up the log, see "moon speak", and look up your info to see that you're supposedly on NA client. x_x;
                Bamboo shadows sweep the stars,
                yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
                Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
                leaving no trace in the water.

                    I applaud your usage of windower JUST to window FFXI . I myself never had the balls to risk getting banned for ease of use. However, I'm willing to bet you are the exception to the rule.

                    Seriously, I've been playing for 2 years now without knowing my parties TP and MP outside of /party macros and I've done just fine. I've also gotten by using the "shorter" macros that are built into the game for 2 years as well. I really don't see how hard it is to play the game the way it was meant to be played...

                      I too use it just for windowed mode, I tried useing the windower light...but it would error out -.- so I had to use the full version, but I removed all the addons before I started using it.

                      and IfritnoItazura, to solve your 4th problem, get FRAPS its a very nice SS program

                        I also just use it for the windowing feature.

                          YOU don't see how hard it is, because you've been playing for 2 years. You've gotten used to everything and had plenty of time to learn it. I've been playing for 4, and I still know how cumbersome and tedious the interface and its functions can be to new players. Especially those playing it on a PC.

                          I think FFXI could benefit from a little more ease of use. I, too, have gotten along fine, but it hasn't been without its bumps. Just because we've both been okay with the way it plays doesn't mean it's perfect, without flaws, or undeserving of some more polish and convenience.

                          All that aside, none of the plugin additions, if made official are going to hurt this game. I'm just tired of people playing the "Square Enix doesn't want to make the game too easy" card. Polishing the interface and making a few things easier to read or pay attention to isn't going to make the monsters easier. It's not going to speed up our travel time. It isn't going to net us more money per auction house sale. It's not like we're getting a free ride just because we can see how long a buff has before it runs out or whatever.

                          Venting aside, I'm excited for the expansion and all its potential. Hopefully the official windower is a sign of many more great things

                            I'll miss DrawDistance. Honestly the game just looks 300x better with terrain distance knocked up a few notches.

                              I actually think that I read somewhere that because of the DX9 upgrade, the DrawDistance will be at least a little better.
