    Ok, what's an IR device?

And no, I said 4pm because a lot of times when I do "At" in Linux I just type "at teatime" and Linux recognizes that as being 4pm. So I like the little reference.

This latest update made Windower act WEIRD. The program runs at the max resolution it has been set to- meaning that the box for the size you configured of that size opens. But it doesn't scale the graphics to the settings.

Meaning that in my case, a box the size of 1024 X 768 pixels shows up, but the graphic display only takes up 800 x 600. This leaves ugly black borders around my game, something that is annoying. And I don't like the official windower because there seems to be a lag between me switching back to FFXI and it registering input from my controller.

    I hate that...

no part of my post shows my "Idiocy" really do you just try and pick fights with me?

I say it again, the windowed mode just came out, good lord people need to be more understanding -.-

windowed mode was added to a game that was not ment to be windowed, so its going to have some issues.

IR stands for Infared. It would be an (arcane) wireless device of some sort. Most wireless input devices are going radio (Bluetooth or otherwise) b/c of better transmission. IR is flaky. I don't know anyone who uses any IR devices at the moment--I have two, a PDA (which has WiFi, so I never use IR) and a tablet PC which also has WiFi so I never use the IR).

An IR device is usually an infra-red receiver for a remote control or some other IR device. In my case, it was the receiver for my Media Center remote control. As soon as I disconnected it from my USB port, 3.3 worked.

I glimpsed a bit about that error on older versions of Windower, but I do not know what the solution for that is. You might have luck finding a fix on the Windower site's forum.

          Good luck!

Addn: Actually, almost all new Media PCs are coming with IR devices now, in the form of the Media Center remote's receiver.

Media PC's eh? So they have a TV like remote like the one my friend Bethany had on her Packard Hell PC like 8 odd years ago? How revolutionary.

I consider IRDA basically defunct in most cases due to the rapidly diminishing costs of other types of wireless devices such as Bluetooth which are leagues better IMO. I'd much rather use my WiFi PDA to control my stereo and video playback than some remote control that I have to point at some little eye. With radio protocols, my computer doesn't have to be in the same room or even visibly exposed to operate.

Yes, actually. Similar to how pretty much all TVs, DVD players, and other media devices still come with IR remotes. They're cheap.

Yeah, I have a Harmony 1000 for my entertainment systems. I'm aware of the fact that RF is replacing IR in general. It's hardly as ubiquitous as you're implying, and IR is by far the more common protocol still, but it will certainly replace IR eventually.

Regardless, the problems with Windower 3.3 for myself and many others stemmed from having an IR device plugged in under Vista, and hopefully knowing that will help some people here get 3.3 up and running.

That's funny... I don't know how to disable that, but I do in fact have an IR device, now that you mention it. My Inspiron 1420 came with the Windows Media Center option (and I took it, of course ) and a remote upgrade (which I took also ).

I'll see what I can do in terms of disabling the remote, because it's nifty to have, but doesn't even work with Winamp, so I'm pretty much over the concept of it right now.

There are two options to turn it off. You can go into your Device Manager and turn it off through Windows (it'll be under Human Interface Devices), or, the easier way, just unplug it from your computer. When you want to use it, you can just plug it back in since it's USB.

Let us know if it works!

It's not USB! Oh, I just figured out how to use my PC's integrated webcam, lol..

But ok, I'll go to the Human Interface Devices subtree and see what happens there.
                    ------------------------------------------
The IR port is hardwired onto the PC, that's what I'm trying to express here, I suppose..
                    ------------------------------------------
Ok, I'm going to try going into Services and disabling InfraRed Monitor
                    ------------------------------------------
NVM didn't work. Looks like I'm stuck with it for now >.<

My advice is for Win2K so you might have to adjust it a bit for XP, but what you're looking for is the device properties page:

Right-click My Computer and select Manage.
Click Device Manager on the left pane.
Find your IR device on the right, presumably under Human Interface Devices.
                      Double-click on the device entry.
On the properties page, look at the bottom for the "Device usage:" box. There will be an option called "Do not use this device (disable)". Select it and click OK. Repeat this for any other entries the device may have.

You may also be able to disable it in the BIOS, but that varies a lot by system, so it's probably easiest to disable it here.
