What are Mercenaries, exactly? Just a fancy name for Volunteers? The article isn't exactly very explicit.

Because: Your face. Also, it's a mystery.

Seriously, you were at a Fan Fest. Are they volunteers?

Murphie's sig mentions he likes MSTRKRFT.

              Anyway.

Mercenaries are probably SE's way to stay on their budget :|

I believe Fan Fest had volunteer jobs last time, but there were only a few of them. I wouldn't take it personally, even if it was your only chance to be at fan fest, if you can't afford tickets, you sohuldn't go. Really, the tickets were probably the things I spent least on.

They didn't call them mercenaries, however.

Maybe they are (free) bodyguards kept around to stab anyone who gets too close to Sage Sundi.

I would go if stabbing was encouraged.

Re: 2007 Fan Festival Mercenary Program

actually, security was pretty light at fan fest. I mean, there was someone checking the passes at first, but I don't remember having much trouble just walking in and out later on. Hell, there was one flap that was just kinda left half open that plenty of people were slipping in and out of to get to the (very disgusting, I tried to use them, and elected to go back to my hotel instead) bathrooms. That might be different this year, since it's in a hotel, but I doubt it would be very radical.

Also, Sage Sundi didn't even have a posse. Someone in my group (Fenrir Server) managed to talk to him while they were taking a smoke break, the person gave Sundi a T-Shirt (with some fanart the guy had done), and Sundi gave him his business card. So Sundi was basically just standing out in the open, although I didn't see him around much, I imagine he made a little effort to stay out of the raving crowd of geeks.

There were also GMs around, I specifically remember seeing Gludd (I didn't believe it was actually him at first, remember this is after a lot of people thought he had been fired, a friend talked to him. I mentioned Gludd's appearance to another GM afterwards on a GM call, so it was definitely him), and I believe one of the servers had their table taken over by GMs (Pandemonium, I think)
