The monster chart is pretty simple, but once you start looking at the elemental weaknesses and resistances for each monster, then it gets more complicated and harder to memorize.
It seems that the magic, abilities, job traits and what-not are all "Feral Skills" each costing a set amount of Feral Points (FP) to set to your monster (much like Blue magic I guess).
Monsters have different limits on the number of Feral points they have. Similar abilities cannot be coupled (I'm guessing you cannot give your mob both double and triple attack, or something like that).
Mobs most of the time have 0 skills learned, but rarely they have some to start, which cause the mob to be more receptive to additional skills, but you cannot remove the ones they came with. Skills seem to be able to level up on their own; higher level, better results, though some skills cannot be leveled.
some sort of fee is involved (looks like Jettons).
Only a certain number of skills can be learned, in addition to only being able to use a certain number of FP.
It seems you have to witness the Feral Skill (JA, Magic WS) with a special device to be able to teach it (ouch) (exact line is "Dialog Table Entry 04648 To add a new feral skill to any ≺Unknown Parameter (Type: 81) 1≻≺Unknown Parameter (Type: 82) 1≻≺Item Parameter 0≻, you must first obtain ≺Unknown Parameter (Type: 82) 1≻≺Unknown Parameter (Type: 81) 3≻≺Item Parameter 1≻ containing the image of that skill.≺Prompt≻")
Yeah thats all I can seem to get about learning/teaching stuff.

Well then, it looks like BST and BLU will have the advantage again, as those are the two jobs that specialize in milking mobs for TP moves (BLU especially). Other jobs could do it was well, but those first two have the hands down advantage.
I to get angry at people that dont even give Pokemon games a try because they are "kiddy"
Well I being 24 and playing Pokemon Pearl right now, would like to say this....
Ignore the anime...... ignore the propaganda...... take the game and play it as a RPG, and you will find it to be a fun game to play, I played the all 4 gens of the game for handheld, and they have all been good.
If you play them and look at them as RPGs, and still dont like them, thats fine, but dont bitch over and over about something you wont even play.
We have "pokemon" in FFXI now, deal with it ;p

Kain (FFIV): I am aware of my actions, but can do nothing about them.
I actually wouldn't mind giving the whole "build a monster" thing a shot, actually. It wouldn't be that terribly bad. Again, a way to pass the time (and it'll be interesting to find out what combos work and what doesn't).
Sounds less like Pokemon and more like Monster Rancher. I'm already entertaining dreams of raising my own Tom Tit Tat or Evil Weapon.
Could be interesting, or could be as irritating as keeping a Chocobo.
One thing i find funny is how everyone is taking for granted that you can teach anything to any monster... SE will probably limit how many abilities and what types of abilities monsters can learn.. this is knowing SE ofcourse, its not naysaying... i just prefer not to keep my hopes up. Here's hoping you can teach spike flail to mobs that have no tail!
signatures are for pussies mew mew mew, here's mine
Meh, it's just fanciful conjecture on my behalf. I'm well aware that SE will severely limit options in this arena, so at best, we'll see maybe a Behemoth or two here and there, but nothing super-powerful, like Kirin, Promathia, or AV.
No rule against letting your imagination run wild. SE will let us know what the real deal is soon enough.
