Last thing I heard of the Pit was it was going to feature "Pitting" various monsters across Vana'diel against each other using some sort of DNA system. The monsters will, in some way, be customisable using this interface.

        Re: August Version Update

Contrary to popular belief. Pokemon is nothing more than a family-friendly take on the Shin Megami Tensei series, which is much darker, occultish and violent. If you've played Digital Devil Saga or Persona, you've only played the spinoffs of the series. But if you've played Nocturne, DemiKids or the most recent Devil Summoner you would basically capture or persuade demons to join you and then have them genetically spliced up into new kinds of demons. That's what the core SMT series really is and Pokemon is totally based on it.

The basic concept behind the pit is you'll be obtaining DNA-like samples of monsters and having them replicated or made into powered up or different creatures. Whether you'll be challenging them BC-style or dueling them against other players still remains unclear.

In FFX, you could capture various mobs and bring them to this guy who'd breed them and create suped-up kinds of monsters for you to fight, some rare and some based on other mob familys, but really, really hard. Most of what was in there could eat any Final Fantasy final boss for lunch. I don't think a Party of Sephiroth, Kefka and Ruby Weapon could even stand up to some of the stuff there. It took an excellent player to really master it.

Considering the Empire's tendancy to create chimera-type mobs and use them as biological weapons (Khimera, Puks, Lamia), taking these concepts and spinning them into this kind of event is fitting.

Well I don't know what Shin Megami Tensei is and I haven't played pokemon since the original release on the game boy. Is it some sort of wave-after-wave of monster fights ala Wild Arms?

err edit: it was explained before i hit post =P

Wasn't that not a "monster game" until well after Pokemon's release.

Shin Megami Tensei is a long running series in Japan since the Famicom (i.e. NES), the main series (sans Persona) didn't make its debut in the US and UK until Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. The older games were point-and-click, first person adventures with Dragon Quest-style RPG battles and the mediating/capturing/breeding of demons.

They chose to release the Directors Cut of Nocturne in the states because Dante from Devil May Cry was a popular character in the US and made appearances in the game. He was also playable at a certain point.

As an aside, Dante's Devil forms in DMC3 were designed by the SMT team at Atlus as a nod to his appearance in SMT: Nocturne.

If the pit is the Monster vs Monster combat, then maybe the Coliseum will be PvP?

                One can only dream.

                  Re: August Version Update

I would imagine that it could possibly be full PvP (that is to say, allowing full equip swaps and whatnot, but without making the other player lose lock-on), or it could be some other form of PvP (although I could hardly imagine what that could be, if not a direct duel).

Of course, if they let RDM remain retardedly broken as they are in PvP, there won't be a point. PvP is only fun if both sides stand at least a decent chance; RDM destroys that and says "No, I win". Hardly any fun.

Naw, I've seen some rdms that just make me lol and can easily be taken down in pvp. Personally i wouldn't mind seeing like the FFX version just to pick mobs to go one on one against with like some sort of betting system. Mob wouldn't yeild exp or drops, but can still skill up from. With selections from every family and type of mob to go against.

Yeah, as in this update will contain the last chapters of the ToAU story. The next update will likely come in October or November as the prep for WotG.
