    Re: Accounts Banned (05/23/2007)

I wonder when there was last a thread about an Update or Bannings that didnt get derailed beyond all recognition?

Not sure what it is about these kinds of threads, but after the first page I tend not to read much, becuase its normally derailed from there on!

I think it was about 45 minutes waiting for people to get from Althea crag to Valley of Sorrows. I wasn't banned for it though, i was warned about doing it however. The Rdm in my pt was slapped with a couple of days suspension.

Nin75, Bst75. Drk61, War61, Rdm40, All other jobs are 37. All 3 starting city missions completed. All Zilart missions completed. All CoP missions completed. TouA completed.

Would you say the same about paying to download music?

I agree that it's stupid, but for other reasons. Namely, the terms of the game dictate that you don't own anything inside the game. SE can take it all away from you without reason if they wanted to.

So basically, people who buy gil are giving money for something they can never truly own. It would be like buying the Brooklyn Bridge. Which, by the way, is something that is quite tangible.

I have no interest in starting a religious debate on this forum, there's a dozen other ones where I could get people more riled up. My point is, God is a bad analogy, as his existance isn't any more solid than gil. A more accurate analogy would be money in a bank, although that's still very inaccurate, as in FFXI, the bank owns all the money, and all you get to do is look at it in your ATM, and use it to buy stuff from the bank, like cookies. Or something.

I was thinking of that analogy as well. And I actually think it's quite fitting.

My employers deposit my pay directly to my account. I go out and use my debit card to buy stuff. I could probably live that way for the rest of my life, never touching a single piece of tangible currency. Even the thing that makes money tangible is essentially worthless. The only reason a dollar bill is worth anything is because the government says it is.

I used to play an online CCG. I'm not even talking about something like Magic: The Gathering, which started on cardboard and then created an online version. This game was purely virtual. You had to buy boosters with actual money and trade your cards with other players, just like you would with a CCG made from dead trees. Some people might consider this foolish, since the cards don't "exist". But what makes physical cards worth the cost more than virtual cards? The cardboard and the paint?

I heard some where that the value of money is what is accepted by the populance. Not the government. In absence of the government & money, who's to say that a goat is worth more than a cow?

If you could convince all the people in the world that a piece of paper that you drew was worth a million dollars, they would generally accept that and offer to buy your paper for a million dollars. (in the situation of paintings, sculptures etc.)

The person buying the cow or the goat.

Anything can be used as currency, so long as it has a value to at least one other party. That's why people buy gil. Gil has value to us all when we play FFXI, but some people value it as much as they do their own "real" (see above posts) money. Saying that they should be banned just because they are "stoopid and want to waste money on a game" isn't fair. Saying that they should be banned because they are losers who cheat in online video games is fair.

Buying gil is somewhat like illegal drugs. You can buy them, but if the police find them, they're gone, and you're punished. Except here the police are omnipotent.

I have heard and seen it to a degree, but I don't stand around and watch these things take place.

To a degree I also imagine it would go to general "fairness" if you claim a NM/HNM you should have the people to kill it, or at the least have the people on their way. If another group with the numbers to kill is sitting their waiting and a very small group is holding in excess of 20 minutes I have no problem with a GM showing up and warping the tanks/kiters/sleepers to their HP.

I like that idea. Another would be to put a time limit on all nm fights(similar to the bcnms). The timer could start from the time the nm is clamed(and give a max time limit based on its lvl). After the time limit the fight would be considered a draw and you would not be able to fight the monster until at-least 48-72 hrs later(even in a party)

Or a more radical idea would be to make all nm drops rare/ex(so they cant be sold--no gill from the item=no holding/overcamping=more opportunity for everyone)
u have to know when to hold them, know when to fold them
