Re: OFFICIAL FFXI Windowed Mode Support Confirmed!
I take it cippy your still a little upset.. lol
Nin75, Bst75. Drk61, War61, Rdm40, All other jobs are 37. All 3 starting city missions completed. All Zilart missions completed. All CoP missions completed. TouA completed.
Wow looks like crap. Sorry no matter how you slice it it's still crap. You ain't gonna get prime rib outta crap. It's a moot point really. Let's stop comparing ffxi to wow. seriously stop it. You like wow so much, then please, go play wow, stop posting on ffxi boards.
Granted ffxi ui could use a work over.
Which is it? I mean, it seems you are arguing a couple things there.
1) WoW looks like crap.
2) The FFXI UI needs work.
I agree with both of those statements. I'd also say
3) The WoW UI is far superior to the FFXI UI in terms of customization.
I mean, any customization is greater than no customization... unless you'd argue that flexibility is a bad thing.
An aside: Why is it whenever someone goes "Hey, you know, WoW (or game x) succeeded where FFXI failed, FFXI should be fixed," the knee jerk response is "Well, go play WoW, then, fanboy!"
What, you like broken?
I'm just trying to be pragmatic here.
"Did this approach to hacks work for WoW?" "Yes."
"Does this aspect of FFXI need to be fixed?" "Yes."
"Could this approach that worked for WoW fix this problem?" "Quite possibly."

I might be wrong, but when Omni was talking about WoW being ugly, he's talking about design, where WoW's cartooniness (is this even a word?) might turn some folks off. (Turned me off, that's for sure) So yes, WoW can be ugly artwise while still has a superior UI.
Addentum: And yes, I think FFXI UI xould use some works too.

As far as I know, there has not been any way to detect /random's due to the way they are calculated and processed. Correct me if I'm wrong though, but I'm pretty certain there's no bots or ways to predict it.
since random numbers are in no way at all random they follow a pattern from random #1 to random #2 and so on the pattern being based off of certain values. which is how "random" numbers can be predicted. its much like the old fishing exploit that let you fish up anything, if its server side or client side is what makes it controllable or not.
infact ive seen people talk about the seed for ffxi random number generaters in posts before.

Though they could just use the Mersenne twister.
There are ways to make it truely random and not so "pseudo-random".
Alternatively, if they can afford it, they can buy a hardware solution instead, something like radioactive decay or something.

I actually like FFXI UI, it could be better , but the fact that i DONT need a mouse is aces to me.
Re: OFFICIAL FFXI Windowed Mode Support Confirmed!
LOL!
I find this funny, I haven't read the entire thread but I'm dying of laughter here hearing people that used to fight me about the windower saying "Why should we not be able to change windows to multi-task as a computer is intented to do" to going now "Why should I change when this windower gives me more abilities".
Like I said in the past a windower is fine with me as long as it does it's name sake and is just a WINDOWER. This is great because it'll allow people to window and allows SE to just target and get rid of those that want a windower just to have an unfair advantage. Why I've always opposed 3rd party programs and state though a 3rd party may seem legal now don't hold your breath that it'll remain that way.
This will just give the needed fire power to ban those using the old windower, just simply because using it then would suggest an intent to cheat. I'm total for this, though not sure if I'll download the windower. I'm not that intrested anyway of pushing my computer needlessly in that fashion.
Cheezy Test Result (I am nerdier than 96% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!)
Re: OFFICIAL FFXI Windowed Mode Support Confirmed!
I like windower for the draw distance plugin >_>. Unfair? Yes. But Meriphtaud Mountains is the most awesome looking zone now :3.
But yea, once they release a full official windower I won't need to stick with the 3rd party one, since the main reason I use it on the PC is to keep my game from crashing from random virus scanner/whatever popups. And also alt tabbing to read these forums during airship rides/party gathering helps me pass the time.

I apologize for the ad hominem, but you make me sad.
You're not talking about botters or RMTs. You're saying you'd like to see other players get banned because they're using something that might be construed as or lead to cheating. Players with a lot of time and emotion invested in the game, just like you.
I'm still curious how a game that emphasizes (read: requires) so much cooperation in order to succeed would have players that value obedience to authority and rules over, you know, supporting other players (although I'll have to say this attitude seems much more prevalent on this board compared to others, or even in the game - but it could just be the guys I talk to).
Either way, where does this attitude come from?
Does it come from that cliche of an "Eastern mindset" that says those in charge are always right, and that groups > individuals?
Or perhaps that forced grouping is a bad idea, in that it breeds contempt for other players?
Something else entirely?
Or perhaps you are just trolling. That'd be nice if you were. I kinda doubt it, though.
"Following the spirit of the law but not the letter is generally viewed more favorably than following the letter but not the spirit. In a court of law, judges usually review the intent of the players involved.
Authoritarians tend to view "following the spirit" negatively as disobeying the law. The reason is that the actual intent of the law may be ambiguous, and allowing anyone to follow his own interpretation of the law may result in anarchy." -wiki
also: old thread is oooooold.

Re: OFFICIAL FFXI Windowed Mode Support Confirmed!
If there is an 'official' windowed mode put out, then any and all arguments supporting the unofficial one go out the window. Windower has always been against the ToS. That, in its simplest definition is cheating. Most of us, and I'm thinking SE as well, have justified Windower because there is no official alternative available. The trumpeted response was typically 'If SE gave us windowed mode, I wouldn't have to use Windower'. Once that no longer is the case, there is no justification for using it anymore in my opinion.
Philosophise all you want, but if people continue to use the non-SE Windower after an official version is made and they get banned for it, I really won't feel much pity for them. Putting time into a character by no means should mean you're exempt from the rules, especially when a legitimate alternative is available.
Re: OFFICIAL FFXI Windowed Mode Support Confirmed!
This thread isn't that old, but how do you consider it NOT cheating when someone in a party has a macro with 10 (guessing) lines instead of the standard 6? I could go on to list all of the plugins from the current illegal windower, but I think you can get my point.
There are still some people in this game who prefer NOT to cheat, NOT to use all those extra plugins, because it's an unfair advantage over others who don't want to use them. I do NOT want have all of my party members' TP. I do NOT want to have the little xp tnl calculators. Hell, I can do that myself if I really want to, but I'm fine with doing the math in my head and estimating how long it will take me to level. That's how it should be.
Those of you who use windower just to use FFXI and possibly browse the internet are not the problem. You're still using a third party program, which is illegal according to the ToS, but you're not actually cheating.
The ones who use all those plugins to make the game "easier" and "better" - those are the cheaters. And yes, they SHOULD be banned for using windower. It says right in the ToS that it is illegal. People could get banned for windower right this very second, and they wouldn't have half an argument in the world to save their case, because they knew it was against the ToS in the first place and they did it anyway.
Is the law wrong? Maybe, maybe not. The fact of the matter is it's still law, and you're still duty bound to honor it.
I'm glad you understand that rules and laws are just codified social mores (i.e.: ground up, not top down), and that it really is a philosophical argument at heart.

Most laws and values are purely based off of what people felt were 'right' and 'wrong' at the time they were written. Its unfortunate when such laws go against ones beliefs. It is amazing when you think about how the United States is praised for its diversity in beliefs and cultures, yet is governed through some of the narrowest visions of those beliefs.

That's how ... it should be? That is your choice. Yet you are saying that others choice should be restricted...
And spare me the collectivist argument that it's "not fair." It would be just as fair to allow all these add-on to everyone, and allow the choice to use them or not (again, as WoW has done) as it would be to restrict everyone (to your preferred style of play).

Oh dear. This idea really frightens me.
Anyway, in this case, the spirit of the rule is simple: "Don't F* over other players." Don't bot, don't scam, don't RMT... Not being able to use plug-ins is a solution to that problem, not an end in of itself.
