Re: New Multiplayer Battlefields: Salvage (12/15/2006)
Yes, but it will eat 3 days' worth of tags.
If you plan on doing Salvage twice a week, like Dynamis and Limbus, it will pretty much eat all the assault points you can earn in a week, if it's really 2k AP per person per run. (And that's assuming you never have any trouble finding a group for assault, and you never lose.) Of course you're also up to 8 nights of activities a week at that point - not counting ENMs, merit, HNMs popped or otherwise, etc.
If you plan on doing it more than twice a week - you'll run out of AP in a month or two, even if you are doing the max assaults possible.
I'll also point out that at the moment, if you have nothing better to do with your assault points, most non-ex assault items are going for about 50 gil per assault point. That means 2000 AP = 100k gil. That exchange rate will probably go *up* as people start saving their AP for Salvage (there were already quite a few people saving their AP for ex loot and buying all the non-ex stuff with gil, but now there will be even more). That makes it at least twice as expensive to enter as Limbus just in opportunity cost.
That doesn't mean I don't intend to try it, but being nowhere near finished collecting Assault loot yet, I probably won't go more than once a week, if that (assuming I can find a suitable group to go with).
It's an interesting choice to make Salvage both depend on and conflict with Assault this way. It may end up being completely overlooked if the loot isn't good enough - if you don't at least fairly often get something worth more than 2k AP/100k gil *per person*, who's going to keep going after the novelty wears off? Of course, if there's BLU/COR/PUP AF2 in there, or abjurations that can't be gotten in sky, some people are going to stay interested for a while.
Some people are suggesting that you do higher rank assaults - that really only works once. Without the +50% bonus for first time completion they don't give noticeably more points than the lower ones. Some of them are more convenient, especially in hellholes like Lebros, but if it doesn't matter which staging point you spend points from, there's no reason to use Lebros points when you could use Leujaoam points instead. Massacring worms is easy for everyone.
The one point of unalloyed good news is that it will almost certainly make it easier to find groups for assault, especially higher ranks. More people who weren't bothering with assault or only doing a little will be likely to do more of it and work to raise their rank.

Yeah, if you are working towards all the 20k items, I can see it being a problem. You just need to find people like me who aren't saving for any items. I have 5-13k on each of the areas. That is a lot of trips to Salvage
