First of all, because the price drop happened before SE announced the bundle. I doubt Blizzard predicted that SE had something up its sleeve for October and preemptively decided to lower their prices to counter whatever it was. Second, because of the fact that they are both common marketing strats. Repackages and price drops happen to every game that achieves some degree of success, so there's no reason to associate one with the other. WoW will get repackaged to include it's expansion sooner or later, and it won't be because of some other game, it'll be because that's a natural part of a product's life cycle.

But the third and biggest reason, I don't believe that the company that owns 53% of the MMO market gives two sheeps about what the company that owns 4% of the MMO market is doing.

It's not as though this is some sort of new strategy. Game makers have been doing it for years. Everquest came out with a Gold Collection, then Platinum and now Titanium. It's a pretty standard business model. And they have a new expansion out (or coming out, I'm not 100% sure). That's 12 since it launched. Sure, they consolidated some servers, but the game is still going.

Bottom line: Lowering the price or bundling expansions doesn't mean the game is dead or even dying.

FFXI is fighting for the limited retail space at the Mega Marts and videogame retailers, and after so long it only makes since to make a combined game pack. The game needs to attract new players and having to buy the game and expansion packs is not very appealing to new players. And the content in the Vana Diel collection has been payed off and SE makes much more money off player fees then unit sales anyways.


But for complaining about the lack of population on you server I shall curse your server with the plague of One Hundered N00bs!

I've heard of Square feeling threatened by Blizzard, but never Blizzard feeling threatened by Square.

They figure everyone who has the PC version of FFXI has already gotten the expansion or will get the remaining boxes that are in stores. This is for any new customers that might come along, or returning players. I know I liked the convenience of the previous FFXI Collection when I returned earlier this year. My updating took less than a couple hours, and it was all on a single DVD with an updated manual.

I cant remember where I posted it but I posted th enumbers for FFXi population was at around 700k I think MOchart was my source at that time.

Same here Jei when its released in teh Uk, 1 disk with alot fo teh updates = happy player when your HD goes tits up and you have to re-install.

Interesting name considering it's released in 2006. I'd expect it to lure one or two people who have quit back to the game though.

That's just something that all media outlets do for some reason. If a certain franchise is published annually and the name of the edition is included in the title (eg: Guinness Book of World Records 2007), they usually like to use the year after it's published for the title rather than use the year that it actually was published. Why do publishers do this? Don't ask me, I'm no marketing major. <_<

Good thing they're doing this. I'll be building a new computer soon that can play FFXI and I don't want to have to go around looking for it and ToAU seperately.

Its a play on words. 2007 is around the corner. If they named it 2006, people immediately think its out of date. It seems like stupid logic, but apparently it works because makers still do this.

Turn this concept around. What if they released it with the title \"2006\" last year (oh yeah....they did lol). People are/were still buying it, even though if they actually stopped to think about it, its a year old product.

Pretty much. Considering the huge public anger of shortage of the units in the first couple of weeks, yet people bought it once SE got out additional units. I think ToAU was more successful than CoP with more units sold (as well as high interest level) primarily because of the 3 new job classes (The fact that the missions weren't so difficult to get access to the new area also made it more popular than CoP)
