  • New Notorious Monsters and Battlefields!(07/19/2006)

    http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics...75/detail.html

In the upcoming version update, new notorious monsters and battlefields will be introduced into the Treasures of Aht Urhgan areas.
Also, certain monsters will soon possess an accumulative resistance to magic.

    New Notorious Monsters

Now that everyone seems to be used to the new areas and enemies of the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion disc, a number of notorious monsters will be introduced in the next version update.

In addition, a new type of high notorious monster (HNM) will be added to the beastman strongholds.

Victory will not come easy when facing these new challenges!

    New Battlefields

A number of new battlefields are scheduled for the Treasures of Aht Urhgan areas. You can attempt these battlefields by using Imperial Standing credits.

We have adjusted the system so that most players should be able to make an attempt once or twice a week with the Imperial Standing they earn, but players can enter the battlefield every day if they have enough credits. This should make the new battlefields more accessible than orb battles.

    Accumulative Magic Resistance

Currently, a large number of players can team up to overpower the enemy in certain battles by hitting the enemy repeatedly with only elemental magic. This tactic has had an unbalancing effect on the game, and we decided a change was needed.

However, altering the effects of powerful magic spells would have a negative effect on black mages and other magic users. Rather than altering magic effects or strengthening monsters, we determined that the adjustment to solve this issue should be as small as possible in scope and affect other gameplay mechanics as little as possible.

Therefore, for the next update we have decided to implement an accumulative magic resistance effect for all monsters whose strength reads "impossible to gauge."

We have also made several other adjustments to minimize the effect of this change on black mages and other magic users. For example, a party fighting a notorious monster with one to two black mages will probably not notice the difference.

However, we have decided to give Bahamut in the quest "The Wyrmking Descends" and Diabolos in the quest "Waking Dreams" a stronger accumulative magic resistance than other notorious monsters.

    -Types of Affected Magic Damage
When a notorious monster is repeatedly hit by the following types of magic, it will accumulatively build magic resistance:

Black magic (elemental), white magic (divine), ninjutsu, magical blood pact abilities, magical blue magic, magical weapon skills (e.g., Spirits Within and Red Lotus Blade), and certain job abilities (e.g., Chi Blast and Mijin Gakure)

    -Resistance Fluctuation
When a monster with accumulative magic resistance is hit by a magic attack, the amount of damage it receives will decrease in accordance with that monster's resistance. At the same time, its resistance will increase.

The monster's resistance will increase in accordance with the amount of damage incurred, but each monster has a maximum resistance level.

In addition, the monster's resistance will decrease with time if it is not hit by any repeated magic attacks

While I don't like the change (my blm is 54 - dunno whether to bother levelling it to 75 now), just think of all those manaburn RMT groups that are gonna have to start again...

How many HNMs and NMs do people manaburn? Those are going to be the only ones affected. Rmt can still level my manaburning they just won't be able to kill any NMS that way.
            Thanks Kazuki.

Well, that'll kill Under Observaytion, make CoP even harder - as it's not a nerf to blm.. it's a nerf to all magic damage...

Will probably also hurt rdm/drk's chainspell stun routine...

              Hmm, I miss anything?

Quite a few. This comepletely changes sky runs - With so much HP, eventually they will build up a resistance to Black Magic, Flashes, Stuns, and Chi Blasts(Will MNKs finally be able to punch, or will they be kicked out of every HNMLS?)

                  I was looking forward to Manaburning Diabolos(63 BLM) and Ark Angels, even though I particuarly dislike manaburn EXP parties.(Don't ask me why, I just prefer conventional ones) I have a feeling that unless SE enhances this "Building magic resistance" AND individual BLM's power, BLM will be left out of most mission parties ; ;

This will bring a HUGE change on the game - Mabye all those whiny melees will wish they never complained about BLM manaburning Divine Might when they can't get the sky gods to 1/2 health.

Stun isn't elemental magic - they mentioned elemental, they mentioned divine, no enfeebling or dark magic.

Meh I did all of CoP with only 1 blm anyway, we went for good old fashioned brute force...

I have never been a fan of manaburning if I am honest. I did DM the hard way, I finished ZM the hard way, I did CoP the hard way, we do Dynamis with barely enough blm to one shot a statue, but we do fine. I just want to wait and see how bad it is - lets face it, we screamed nerf with the nin shadow thing beforehand and it proved to be a minor blip on the nin radar.

and I'm not going to go RNG, I was leveling BLM not for sky or dynamisis(hey, that'll be affected to!) but for the shiny magic at high levels. Course I've alreayds seen all of it, so I might not take BLM that much higher anyway. It's just not fun now that conventional EXP parties are so rare... though they may become more common now that 7/8ths of the BLM population will quit and BLM will be a rare sight, but powerful when only one is in a normal party(especisally a normal party).

And Absolute Virtue will also become unbeatable again! YAY!

And... damn I need to get gil fast, BLM gear prices will DROOOOOPPPPPPPP like flies! but I just spent all of it leveling NIN!

Must... do... BCNM... ENM... make... GIL!!!!

Same. IMO, if you can't do CoP with only one BLM, you fail at FFXI. I don't think there's a "NEED" to manaburn anything other than HNMs. But it's made my Tamas Ring sooooo much more worthwhile.

Edit: Well, I didn't want to quit BLM, but ever since ToAU came out, there's never been any invites. When you get 3,000 XP from SOLOING in 3 days, then it kind of hits you.....you're leveling a dead job.

I'd like to thank all of the whiny, emo melees for this, who complained about manaburns to SE, and how they could never do them. >: (

In fact, manaburns are pretty rare until 75.......I've been in ONE manaburn my entire FFXI career, and I'm at 67 BLM. I try to find other BLMs to manaburn with, thinking it'd be good XP......nope, can't find any. And all the BRDs want to do is TP Burn.....tools FTW!

Heh, so apperently SE is listening to the nerf whiners now. Anyway, i'm glad they settled on just NMs, hopefully that means melee will become more important to killing things.

Although I am gonna laugh my ass off if the same thing that happened with the RNG update (where they lost most of their ability to do ranged damage, specifically on kited targets) happens here, 'cause it's gonna hit so much harder. If BLMs can't damage monsters easily, melees are gonna spend all their time bitching about how hard things are, the same melees bitching about BLM being overpowered.

                          Double Post Edited:
another interesting note, they decided on what the "H" in "HNM" means for us. Now we can stop bickering about it, SE says it's high >:O

This only effects casters who use the same element....over and over and over and over again. I can understand why Blms would want to cast their most powerful spell as often as possible without taking hate, but weaker spells of varying elements can be thrown in there as well. The update says that the resistance decreases with time. I'm sure there will be some time between spells. This is hardly a nerf, rather a way of forcing casters to use variety in their nukes.

With great power comes complete disregard for any and all responsibility.
