I don't mean it in any offense whatsoever, but it's 2006 and people who don't own DVD-ROM drives are in the minority. To be honest I'm quite happy about this news. I notice a lot of publishers such as EA still releasing 6-disc CD-ROM games and not even releasing a DVD version at all, and it's good to see SE trying to get somewhere.
DVD-ROM drives aren't that expensive anymore either. Maybe it's time you go pick one up.
However, this could be just a matter with the official website. Perhaps other stores will be carrying a CD-ROM version as well?

No offense to anyone either. I don't know everyone's financial situation but I did some research.
pricewatch lists the cheapest dvd-rom drive as $17 (free shipping)
zipzoomfly has one for $20 (free shipping)
newegg has one for $18 (plus $4.89 shipping)
You can prolly get one locally similarly priced if you shopped around. From a quick perusal, DVD burners are $38 with free shipping.
Installing them is another issue though.
Amazon lists the game media as CD-ROM. Probably a typo though.
I realize that I am outdated and in the minority of PC Gamers with the fact that I do not have a DVD-ROM drive.
My problem is, why would Square suddenly change the tech requirements to a game, especially an MMORPG where there is a steady playerbase?
It is ridiculous to mandate some players who have been playing the game just fine over the past 2+ years to buy and install a new drive (regardless of price, it's the principle of the matter).
Perhaps it has something to do with the sales of the Vana'diel Collection? I know a lot of people who bought it just so they don't have to go through a bajillion discs in the event of a reinstall.

well, i wouldnt say the majority of people have dvd-roms. that's a pretty broad statement. it's like saying the majority of house holds have high speed internet. which is not true. anyhow, dvd is a lot more efficient i'll say. i remember i had to reinstalll a while back. 7 discs... ouch.
