In the upcoming version update, it will be possible to view the contents of your Mog Safe, Storage, and Mog Locker from any location, not just inside your Mog House.
      this is really neat

they talked about display memory... time to say byebye to PS2?

Ever tried pressing /bank or /storage anywhere in game? -.-

And, it's never time to say byebye to PS2, that is a stupid thought, and has ben discussed many times, but there won't be a byebye to PS2 ever, not before there is a byebye to PC or Xbox360.

        Re: Mog Lockers (04/05/2006)

...they could always just release an expansion for everything but PS2, and put the incompatible features into the expansion. Not likely to be a popular idea, but it'd be one way to move past the PS2 without abandoning support for it entirely.

(Architecturally, this could be done however appropriate, including even possibly being a complete replacement for FFXI client that was server-compatible in the most extreme. Making it an expansion is simply the most obvious way to integrate it into current marketing methods.)

As for PC hardware requirements, I have to say that increasingly Microsoft Windows is becoming the most expensive requirement to meet. The hardware situation has changed dramatically. I got the computer I use for FFXI from a thrift store that funds a non-profit PC-recycling operation; it's higher spec than most of what they sell, but it's still not rare. I had to swap out the video card with that of my old desktop, but even that was a clearanced part bought online. For the record:

        CPU: 1.3GHz Athlon
Memory: 512MB PC-133 (worked okay on 256MB original memory as well)
Hard drive (Windows): 30GB (you could get away with as little as 15GB, 20GB safer)
Video: ATI Radeon 8500 (Original Radeon 2 chipset, these days Radeon 3s are seen as obsolete)

The computer itself cost $130 nominally, $65 to me as a volunteer for said non-profit. Video card was $60 at the time I bought it a few years ago, but you might find an equivalent in a thrift store or clearance bin somewhere for much less today.

Moral: If you even see it in a retail chain like Best Buy, it's probably a fair bit more than you really need for this game.

As for the controller, I've been pretty happy with the Parallel port PSX/PS2 controller adaptor, which I've commented on here in other threads many times. Of course, if you don't have a Parallel port or need it for your printer, then the USB adaptor may be better.

          Re: Mog Lockers (04/05/2006)

Honestly, I think Renarudo nailed it. They won't drop support for FFXI on the PS2. It would piss off far too many people and they would lose way too much money on it. I do think, that in a couple years (hope they give me time to finally make it to 75) they will come out with FFXI-2 or whatever they want to call it. It will be available for PC and probably ps3 and 360 (they could run into the same problems down the line for these two, but it will happen to the 360 first).
Qaitakalnin, its not that we have a problem with the ps2 users. Its a problem with the ps2 itself. I have several friends ingame who are on ps2, and would hate to not be able to play with them anymore. In a perfect world SE would drop support for ps2 tomorrow and buy a quality pc for everyone that did play on ps2, so that they could continue to play. Obviously this will never happen. It would be nice if everyone on ps2 would buy a pc to run it and phase out the ps2 entirely, but if I had to make a decision between losing my ps2 friends, and not getting better graphics and more capabilities, I'd choose to not have the extra capabilities.

            Re: Mog Lockers (04/05/2006)

Some ffxi players actually can't get another computer, or just don't know how to use one.

I've met people in ffxi that are computer illerate. That is why ffxi is so unque in it's own little way. It caters to a crowd that the PC world never had, the non techie.

Reason why so many JP people play PS2. Housing is so tight, electricity is costly, and PC skills isn't always there.

I play on the ps2 and pc and between the two i play more on the ps2 simply for the fact that the controls are alot easier than the pc, I know some people have macros and links for keys to cause fast pace action for skillchains and the like but for me its a pain to move the character on a keyboard than it is a controller, I'm alot faster with the controller than a keyboard, I mainly use it to talk to people. I know you can have a controller for pc but its really a pain to program the thing , I would probably play the pc more if SE had a default control setup for it but for now I'll use the pc for when my girlfriend wants to watch tv and the ps2 for my main play

                Re: Mog Lockers (04/05/2006)

The other problem with abandoning the PS2 (even if it's combined with adopting the PS3) is that it allows the PC requirements to start creeping up. As long as SE is committed to not doing anything the PS2 can't do, it won't do anything my computer can't do, either; but once it's freed from the requirement of PS2-compatibility, you can't get that kind of guarantee with any computer less powerful than an X360.

Everquest had that kind of gradually-creeping-upward system requirements, I think, and some people found that they couldn't get the latest expansions because they would have to buy a new computer to run them. And then the in-game advantage provided to players that had the expansions was just too great (imagine leveling past 25 without RoZ), which ended up forcing those people out of the game.

I think SE looks carefully at the example provided by EQ and other games, and decides when it's better to be like them and when it's better to be different; and I think the previous paragraph makes it clear that it's better to commit to *not* increasing system requirements with successive patches/expansions, even though it limits your ability to introduce flashier graphics. Graphics didn't make the FF movie worth spending time or money on - even though its graphics haven't yet been improved on by other movies, let alone video games.

The new areas and monsters are cool, but don't put any more stress on the hardware than the existing ones - which is just the right course to take, IMO.
