    Compatible Graphics Card Driver Updates

Our development staff has been working closely with graphics card manufacturers and has confirmed that the following drivers are compatible with FINAL FANTASY XI for Windows.

Please visit your graphics card manufacturer's web site for all driver software downloads.

Compatible graphics drivers as of Mar. 12, 2006:

    NVIDIA (http://www.nvidia.com/page/home.html)

We are conducting compatibility tests with the "NVIDIA ForceWare (TM) Ver. 81.98" driver for the following graphics cards. We have detected a minor issue in game-play lag when effects such as magic or songs are displayed. We are currently investigating the cause.

    - GeForce 7800GTX
    - GeForce 6 series

Compatibility has been confirmed for the following graphics cards using the "NVIDIA ForceWare (TM) Ver. 81.98" driver.

GeForce 6 series(excluding graphics cards that are incompatible with "NVIDIA ForceWare (TM) Ver.66.93")
    - GeForce 4 Ti series
    - GeForce 4 MX series
    - GeForce 3 series
    - GeForce 2 MX series (over 32MB of VRAM)

Compatibility has been confirmed for the following graphics cards using the "NVIDIA ForceWare (TM) Ver. 56.64" driver.

GeForce FX series (compatibility only confirmed with "Bump Mapping" disabled in Final Fantasy XI Config)

How to disable the Bump Mapping setting in Windows XP
    1. Run "FINAL FANTASY XI Config" (accessed via "Start" -> "Programs" -> "PlayOnline" -> "Final Fantasy XI" -> "Final Fantasy XI Config")
    2. Open the "3D Map" tab and uncheck "BumpMap Enable." Click "Close."
    3. When the "Save settings?" screen is displayed, click "Yes."

IMPORTANT: You cannot run the configuration tool while running FINAL FANTASY XI and PlayOnline.

    ATI Technologies Inc. (http://www.ati.com)

Compatibility has been confirmed for the following graphics cards using the "Catalyst 5.13" driver.

    - RADEON X1800 series
    - RADEON X1600 series
    - RADEON X1300 series
    - RADEON X850 series
    - RADEON X800 series
    - RADEON X700 series
    - RADEON X600 series
    - RADEON X300 series
    - RADEON 9800 series
    - RADEON 9700 series
    - RADEON 9600 series
    - RADEON 9500 series
    - RADEON 9200 series
    - RADEON 9000 series

    * Compatibility tests are currently being conducted on other graphics hardware.
    * The OS used for compatibility testing is Microsoft Windows 2000/XP
    * Depending on your system's configuration, the above graphics cards and drivers may not function correctly. Acquiring and installing driver software is your responsibility.
    * The above information is confirmed as of March 2006. Later drivers or graphics cards may not function correctly or be detected.
    * If you are using a computer that was made by an OEM vendor, please use the graphics drivers provided by the manufacturer.

I remember there was a time when your graphics card would either work with a game or would not. There were no ways to make it work, if it didn't.

Now, there's only two card manufacturers. Wow. Did someone predict this 10 years ago?

Sorta... Its standard in the computer industry to boil every thing down to two major companies, sometimes three. This applies to almost everything except motherboards, which have a couple more options.

          Video Cards: nVidia, ATI
Sound Cards: Creative Labs (and maybe Yamaha)
          OSes: Windows and OSX
          Processors: AMD, Intel
          Monitors: Sony, Viewsonic
Networking: Linksys, Netgear, and sorta D-Link
          Random junk: Belkin
          Controlers: Logitech

The lines between these big names and those that follow them are always huge.

I'm using X1300 right now, I have quite a lot of glitches going in
weird textures in the sea and lava for example...

but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence
transform a yellow spot into the sun.

I remember when there was no such thing as a "Graphic Whooshamakalit". It just plugged into your TV.

And, you could spend a couple hours and write your OWN games and save them on handy disks that fir inside your books to carry 'em around with you!

              Space Word Blaster Rocks!!!

              *blip*blip*beep*blip*

Good to know that since they're taking the time and energy to create more compatibility problems, they're trying to fix one or two of them.

its a shame they are just now testing these drivers, seeing that im using 84.21's. i could have told them theres a lag issue with the 7800 series as well. seeing that i have a 7900 gtx 512 mb they need to hurry and catch up!!!!!! i really wish this game was more graphics card oriented than cpu. i have to run my amd opteron 148 (2000mhz) at 2700 mhz. it also seems 2 gbs ram makes little to no difference.

Re: Compatible Graphics Card Driver Updates (Mar. 24, 2006 01:10 [PST])

I'm confused about a few things...

                    1) I've been using the "NVIDIA ForceWare (TM) Ver. 81.98" before this compatibility test was conducted and I distinctly remember having lag during Magic and Songs with my GeForce 6800GT. Have the 81.89 been changed or something? I'm currently using the latest drivers (84.21) and I'm still having the same problems.

                    2) I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere before, but I just thought I'd point it out. No matter what drivers I install, the textures in-game seem to always have problems... I'm not sure how to explain it, but there are little white dots that flash in certain corners of walls, player models, etc. and some of the textures would occationally flash in wierd colors. At first, I thought this was an overheating problem but the temperatures on my graphics card and CPU are fine. This problem doesn't come up in any other games I play on this computer.

                    My specs:

                    AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.2Ghz
                    Asus K8V-SE Deluxe
                    1GB Corsair XMS DDR400
                    PNY nVidia GeForce 6800GT 256MB
                    Thermaltake X - 480Watts

...and I don't think there's anymore hardware relevant to my problem. ;D
                    lolVIT{Paladin}{No thanks.}

What is bump mapping and should it be on or disabled for best gameplay results?

This is not the technical description, but Bump Mapping makes surface appear...well...bumpy. Like cement will have more realittic textures. As well as cloting. Disabling it improves performance.
