One reason for not resummoning the puppet in the video is that if they didn't have whatever ability is used to summon them they would need to go into the ability menu showing all of the BLU's job abilities. The video was primerally another display on the BLU in combat, as others have said the PUP was just there for the camera.

Most RDM NM soloing doesn't rely on melee or doesn't use it at all. It's largely DoT-Grav kiting. (Which is one reason it won't work on Kirin - not only is it hard to stick grav on him, but his auto-regen would exceed the amount of DoTs that can be maintained by one char. To say nothing of the summons...)

Now, if BLU gets the tulwar and falchion groups of curved swords (which seems likely based on their class concept, history and description), that includes Ridill, Seiryu's sword and several other weapons more powerful than anything available to RDM (except Excalibur, which they might get too - every job can use at least one relic weapon.) So they probably will be more melee oriented than RDM.

Also, one of the dev interviews indicated that some blue magic could SC and some could MB. This may indicate that the power of some blue magic is dependent on the BLU's *physical* attack and accuracy (if they really do get Sickle Slash, Screwdriver or something like that), indicating a need for melee oriented gear for those blue magics (in addition to mage gear for Goblin Bomb, Fire Breath etc. - if it's reduced by Shell it's probably increased by MAB and/or INT).

It's possible that the idea of setting blue magic will combine with a broad subjob selection to produce some BLUs with casting-oriented SJ, gear and blue magic selection, others with melee-oriented SJ, gear and blue magics, and some that have both sets of gear, SJs and blue magics and change when they see the party setup. That could lead to BLU being the most complex, versatile and high-maintenance job in the game... knowing me, I'll be hooked.

I wonder what, if anything, stops a BLU from doing something like Screwdriver > Savage Blade > that ice attack from the videos to form a self-SC with MB.

After taking a look at that shot of Cerberus, by the looks of his eyes and armor, I'm starting to believe he may be a Terrestrial Avatar.
Before you say anything, it has never been said there were only 5, though the Kuluu only seemed to worship the 5 we know of.

Consider this:
Each Terrestrial Avatar is a Guardian of something.
Bahamut was the Guardian of the gate to paradise, what they considered to be heaven (sorta.)
What if Cerberus, as a Terrestrial Avatar, has taken on his old role of Guardian to the gates of Hell?

Just as ‘Opening the Gates of Paradise’ actually means to bring about the perfect world on Vana’diel, what if Cerberus protects another Gate, one which means ultimate ruin for our world? (probably other than the Emptiness)


These new large beastmen (which I never thought was Alexander and am HOPING aren't Iron Giants) seem to live on or near this new Volcano area (with an odd Jagil, for some reason. ._.)
So that, in part, explains the architecture near the lava (and, possibly, even the placement of Cerberus in what seems to be almost the same area.)

Iron Giants would be more of an Arcane mob then a beastmen. The ones shown are probably just a new beastmen type that wasn't announced yet. Though they do look similar to Lotr Trolls. And I do agree Cerberus looks more like an avatar then anything else in the scenes they showed. The way they showed him makes me doubt he's a major story boss and more of a guard dog type avatar as was said earlier.

As for Blu, i don't think they're going the melee route with them as they spent all of two demos showing off their magic capacity. Again, no self buffs to increase melee dmg were shown, not one WS or self SC were used and everything the Blu did for Dmg was based on MP abilities(And yes SE already confirmed Blu would use MP).

And with pup, other then saying it doesn't equip a standard weapon, I can't say much. They haven't even shown one of it's abilities and all it was in that fight against the heros was a floating camera angle. It most likely relies on the puppet to do everything for it and possibly equips them as weapons. I have a feeling this was an attempt at a Mime like class where the puppet can mimic other jobs and the Pup just controls it.

It seems SE stayed away from adding a new direct melee job this time around as the three new jobs added don't seem to have high melee Dmg skills. Cor is a buffer job like Brd, Blu is a mage job that can use a sword and Pup just doesn't seem to have any melee qualities as of yet. Was hoping for a new melee DD job myself but I don't see that happening here.

The terrestrial avatars seem to be connected to the Mothercrystals. There's five of them, three have their homes practically right on top of Mothercrystals (Diabolos, Carbuncle, Bahamut), a fourth (Fenrir) is not far from one.

However, if the Near East and Far East don't have their own Mothercrystals, why do they exist and why haven't they been destroyed by Emptiness? So maybe they *do* have their own Mothercrystals, in which case they probably have their own terrestrial avatars too...

All that being said, there's no guarantee Cerberus will be an avatar rather than just a monster. He's only been an avatar (GF) in one game and wasn't anything all that special when he appeared in Kingdom Hearts.

Minotaur, Ouryu, Snoll Tzar, Omega, Ultima, etc. aren't avatars, although they are significant storyline bosses. (Ouryu, however, is the minion of an avatar - maybe Cerberus is a minion of Odin in the TAU storyline? They come from separate mythologies, but SE has always been willing to be a bit loose with the mythological antecedents, ever since they gave Shiva a sex change.)

It's therefore also possible that the giant-like thing is a mission boss - if there's an entire race of those things, it wouldn't be surprising if you fought one or more of them at some point in the storyline (much like I expect there to be Mamool Ja and Lamia boss fights).

Why does everyone insist the new Avatars HAVE to be Cerberus and Odin? I still hold firm to the fact that they'll add Phoenix to some degree since Tenzen's already made mention of it. It's already been said the Near/Far East have an Avatar, Phoenix. I think if either, the second avatar could possibly be Odin OR Cerberus, and Phoenix will be the other.

It's already been said the Near/Far East have an Avatar, Phoenix. I think if either, the second avatar could possibly be Odin OR Cerberus, and Phoenix will be the other.

Odin and Cerberus were in the video. But why do people assume that SMNs are going to get them? Personally I think they've had enough new cool stuff recently.

Well Pheonix will most likely play an important role in the story at a later time and date, but this expansion has little to nothing to do with Tenzen's home. I feel they're going to do something similar to what happened with the last two expansions, use one to release large amounts of content and new areas then use the next to release a story heavy expansion. This expansion has to do with the near east, with a highly arabic theme, yet Tenzen originates from the far east, a notably asian like culture. *If* Pheonix is added as an avatar then it will not happen until after his part in the story about the emptiness, which even after CoP is finished is still ravaging Tenzen's homeland, is more fleshed out.

And the reasons why Cerberus and Odin are being talked about most is because SE took the time to directly showcase both of them. Odin especially was featured in that teaser as they made sure you noticed him via a long, slow close up as the ending image. And just for the record, seeing as (as far as I'm concerned) he is riding something that A ) IS Odin and B ) he will not be a summon, but rather a major story character a la Bahamut.

As a smn i have to ask why do we need More avatars? we have plenty of variety just not very diverse abilities that separate each just an ability that is widely used that makes a difference from teh rest. Ie garuda hastega titan stoneskin
