With these loooong emergencys.. why cant SE do something like.. Beta test real fast with all the jobs and average things each player has to do? Check AH, check Chocobo, check Airships.. check vendors. Better to be longer than be sorry that they didnt even check it at all. Its like they just update and expect no problems what-so-ever. Its like making 1+1=3 and expecting it to work..

Before anyone tells me, I have no idea what its like to work on a sever and updates.. but all these emergencys and 10hr updates are lookin sloppy.

the 10 hour update recently was to replace the server backbone (which is of course is a shorthand way of saying: the computers that we all log in through to get to the actual worldservers; including but not necessarily limited to their local DNS hub, the login verification servers, the playonline services server, etc etc.)

this was a physical hardware replacement which basically means SE sent a bunch of techs into the server room. the turned everything off. removed a bunch of old servers and replaced them with shiny new ones. 10 hours is probably fast considering how large a task this *could* be. (I know when my business replaces our internal backbone the network is down for three days and I highly doubt our server setup is as sophisticated as SE's. considering that Playonline serves something in the area of six games for well over 600,000 customers)

of course. as with any new hardware- there can be 'growing pains' while the systems get used to the load. maybe something wasn't compiled correctly, or one of the ports on a server was faulty or a power supply browns out. there's a lot of things that can happen in the first few days that won't get detected during the burn-in check that would be done immediately after installation.

SE is allowed a few days to sort all this out as far as I am concerned. if this is still happening ~next~ month. then there will be complaints to be had.

I agree. They would'nt tick so many people off if they did that. I know, I play Guild Wars (used to) and have never once had a problem (well, I have it was just the connection on my end). =D
