Re: X360 Final Fantasy XI Requires Hard Drive

lol pearl, i was thinking of something similar when i recalled the talks of blu-ray's storagability (up to 50gigs) but honestly, putting a DVD-RW in a console? i think it would make the console even more expensive and would just ask for MS to be pirated. ;.; Anyone know if the behemoth PSX has DVD-RW capabilities? I might buy one for bagain price now that I've thought of hacking consoles with the ability to do so >.>

Oh and about the usb HDD, it might be more complicated, since both systems more than likely run off different OS's. BUT, SE already managed to make the same game compatable on 3 systems, so I wouldnt out it past them. a USB HDD, if pulled off properly, may save cost on all 3 sides.

Maybe they ought to build an Operating System strictly for this kind of stuff. It'd be interesting to see "The Final Fantasy OS!"...

Also, to address the CD-issue. While you could be happy playing a game on CD/DVD, think of this. What happens if your disc gets all scratched up and you can no longer access "OIJH Online" (just to give it a name) because your game's scratched up? Sure, you could probably go out and buy another copy, but ask yourself this. Are they going to continue making copies of that game on CD/DVD? Maybe, I've yet to see anymore releases of most of the MMORPGs, including FFXI. So perhaps, HDD IS the way to go.

Edit: I just figured it out, folks! Square Enix doesn't need to announce it'll be on the PS3 because the simple fact that the PS3 IS backward-compatible with PS2/PSone video games. And the dock-bay (expansion bay if you will) for the PS3 will be able to be fitted WITH the PS2 HDD! :D

(Now pray I am right, or die!)

Don't jump the gun. The PS3 might not be able to read the formatting of the HDD of the PS2. It might not even read the file formats that the PS2 uses. It's all conjecture at this point.

Draco Dagon, don't forget your HDD is practically just a set of CDs (or more better relation floppy disks in an air tight container). So a HDD over time will also degrade, degrades faster if you lack the knowledge to care for it just like a CD does. The only major advantage of a HDD is it's a Massive Storage device capable of Read and Write in a manner many times faster then a CD can.

Now lets keep on track here this is a discussion mainly of MMORPGs being on CDs vs. HDDs which is the surprise people were having that the FFXI would require the Xbox 360's HDD (Not a big surprise for many here I'm sure, but to others it was).

Off track for a sec. the PS3's docking bay is 2.5" for the slimer HDDs not the 3.2" that the PS2 HDD size is.

I think to play FFXI on PS3, we'd possibly have to REFUCKINGINSTALL it. :anger:  :anger:

Ok, i was expecting that, but if i'm gonna do a fresh FFXI install, it's not gonna be with the ghey graphics of the PS2 when I'm on a sexshee beast like the PS3 -.-

              Related ffxi xbox 360 news...

              http://ffxi.somepage.com/news/184
JG: As we know, the Xbox 360 version will make use of the hard disk drive. Can you estimate the free HD space; the game will make use of?

Toshio Murouchi: The final HDD space required has not been determined yet, but approximately same as Windows version. The HDD space that Final Fantasy XI requires will increase eventually depending on version-updates and the installation of expansion packs.
There's other interesting stuff like issues of porting to 360 at the link too. Like:

              http://www.justgamers.de/?page=article&article_id=1914
JG: What are the detailed features of the Xbox 360 version? Which kind of graphical advance can we expect compared to the PC version?

Toshio Murouchi: The Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XI will support 1280x720p resolution and we believe that its biggest feature is that you can enjoy the gameplay on a beautiful HD screen in your living room. Then again, we did not re-create everything for this version, such as texture images, nor did we use the special graphical functions of the Xbox 360. The reason behind this is that Final Fantasy XI is based on our cross-platform strategy. Even after releasing the Xbox 360 version, we’re planning to keep on updating every platform (Xbox 360, Windows and PlayStation 2) and every language at the same time, to allow every user to play together on the same server, regardless of their platform or location. For the same reason, we don’t have plans to offer special advantages to only one platform, which might strongly affect gameplay.

They will never stop suport for the ps2, if they do than they will might as well kill the whole game.

Re: X360 Final Fantasy XI Requires Hard Drive

Well there are 2 sides to this. You have the side that believes they won't because there are people that still play it on the PS2. They believe that to discontinue support for the PS2 would be a bad business strategy.

The other side will say that PS2 support will not go on forever. It will eventually end. When? Who knows. HDD's are very difficult to find and they do not make PS2's that can utilize the HDD now. Even the PS2 expansion pack is hard to find in some areas. All this points at a gentle phasing out of support for the PS2.

Which side is right remains to be seen. The way I see it is that they are gently phasing out the PS2'ers and when the hd comes out for the PS3, it could be the death knell for the PS2'ers.

I do hope its ported over to the PS3 and discontinued for the PS2. FFXI is getting up there in MMO age. It's starting to look it graphically. It's like a 40 yr old woman that needs a face lift. FFXI needs a graphical face lift and as long as there are PS2'ers it will never happen. (FYI I play on both the PS2 and PC.) If they want to keep the game cross platform, which I think they should, then they need to bring it out on the PS3 and leave the PS2 behind. I think they are waiting to see how well the PS3 does. If a large user base switches over to the PS3, it has a better percentage of being switched. The longer it takes people to jump on the PS3 bandwagon, the longer it will take them to switch it over to the PS3.

Yes right now they state that they will always support the PS2. But if at some point the majority of the PS2 user base buys a PS3, they won't. It just wouldn't be a good business strategy to do it. With fresh new graphics abilities coming soon on the next gen systems, people will have higher expectations for a game. Many people do put graphics high on their list of reasons to play a game and they won't be tempted to buy a game that is graphically old. So to eventually drop the PS2 support is a good business decision in the end, you'll take a little dip at the beginning but in the bigger picture you'll rebound.

"You're only as good as your weakest member."

PS2 was weakest system in 2002 when the other consoles came out.

Quite frankly, it could be entirely possible to support higher systems and the PS2 at the same time, BUT, what is actually stopping the game is the bandwidth available. As long as a multitude of PC users and many PS2 users have dial up, that is the games limiting factor.

SE has done as much as they could to put the heavy stuff client-side(terrain, armor, etc), but when you can only transmit so much data over so much bandwidth, you'll see the performance take a few hits to the kidneys.
