  • X360 Final Fantasy XI Requires Hard Drive

    http://ffxi.somepage.com/news/180

    Quote:
A number of articles recently have been written regarding the upcoming release of Final Fantasy XI on the Xbox 360. The X360 FFXI will require a hard drive on the console, which has surprised some people. An article in Boomtown seems to disbelieve the notion, with further info from XboxAddict:

"Reports online are indicating that Square-Enix’s upcoming Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XI will only be playable if you’ve got a hard drive jammed onto Microsoft’s next-gen machine. The massively multiplayer version of the popular RPG franchise has already enjoyed widespread success on the PS2 and PC - despite the fact that the game never saw a European release on Sony’s machine. In fact, the 360 version will be the first to hit consoles on European shores, likely meaning a lot of fans will be eager to pick up the title at launch. However, the news that a hard drive is required to play is likely to come as a blow, not only to FF fans intending to snag the cheaper, hard drive-less Core version of the 360, but to Microsoft itself. Since the announcement of the dual packages, the company has been insistent that a hard drive won’t be mandatory to enjoy next-gen titles, but that the inclusion of one will enable developers to offer slicker, enhanced gameplay experiences."

It should come as no surprise that Final Fantasy XI will require a hard drive to be played on an Xbox 360; the game has always required a hard drive, regardless of which platform it was on. The concern regarding this is understandable for the PR team at Microsoft, who has been working overtime to assure prospective purchasers that the 20GB hard drive will not be required for any games. Consumers familar with FFXI or the MMOG market in general will understand the nature of these games, and that FFXI regularly releases massive updates that have to be stored somewhere on the system where it is played. The full PC version of FFXI takes up nearly 7GB of storage, and there is no reason to believe that the X360 will be any smaller; indeed, with the "enhanced graphics" promised for the X360 FFXI, it may take up even more storage space. It is beyond imagination to think that the game could be run on a machine without fixed storage.

The requirement of the hard drive for FFXI will be one more reason that any serious hard-core game player considering the X360 will want to purchase the Xbox 360 Premium, with the hard drive and other "accessories" included. It remains to be seen whether the steep price of that console package will encourage large numbers of potential X360 owners to wait for the inevitable price drops down the road. For Square-Enix, it must certainly be their hope to try to move many subscribers, both new and old, to the X360 version. Not only do they get revenue from a new sale of FFXI, but it increases the longevity of game to have it sell well on a new console. The release of FFXI on the X360 will certainly expand it's reach into Europe, since it has never been released on a console there, as mentioned above. Even with the steep initial price for a full X360 Premium system, there is no doubt that the release of FFXI on it bodes well for the game overall.

Seriously, first of all why would MS say no games would need the hdd when ffxi is one of their big games, and secondly, why would anyone believe it? I mean, how the hell else did they think it would work?

Ah, the Microsoft pricing scheme even goes to the Xbox.

In Windows 2000, you have Professional (Workstation), Standard Server, Advanced Server, and Datacenter Server.

In the Windows XP/2003 line, you have Home, Professional, Web Server, Standard Server, Enterprise Server, Datacenter Server.

Each getting progessively more expensive in order to get full functionality. Yes, Microsoft at its best milking the consumer of every penny they have with the Xbox Value, Standard, and Premium (Just like their Office suite scheme), you just gotta love Microsoft.

Not really , FFXI is just too big to fit on a DVD , Matter of fact FFXI is constantly updating as well , so the updates have to go somwhere . Like all Premium MMOs the best ones will always need a Hardrive /sage nod

Yes, they are. Ppl actually were believing they could play an mmorpg without a hard drive.

Actually you can, EQ for PS2 is a good example of that. If you can play an MMORPG like FFXI though no way. Depending on how it's built you can have an MMORPG run off a CD, but you definatly can't expect much out of it.

Also to state the obvious an MMORPG on a CD won't be capable of progressing, well depending again on the design. Ones that can progress though usually the client ends up being a CD just mainly a data library of images including world objects, then the server would build the world using this image library.

Problem there still is then you can't have as visually stunning scenery like what FFXI has in it.

I think they are having the same reaction when ppl found out that they would be paying extra to get ffxi on ps2 as well.

Looking at the whole package, the only thing that could have deterrred anyone from buying a FFXI package for ps2 would be the somewhat pricy harddrive.

That didnt stop me tho lol, i bought it right away ^.^

                      Cheers, Ero

I just hate that so far it's not announced for the PS3 (even though the PS3's specs proves it can handle anything well-beyond the Xbox 360). Well I do have a PS2 and PC, so if it does stay on PC at least, I might be fine (there is NO way I'm buying an Xbox or 360 unless I get a job).

But whatever, this should be no surprise. Anyone who is stupid enough to be surprised by such a statement shouldn't be allowed to play FFXI in the first place.

Re: X360 Final Fantasy XI Requires Hard Drive

We know PS3 will have at the very least the possibility for a harddrive, so all i would LIKE is for SE to announce that they are working on it. Christ, if they just say "We are working on FFXI for PS3, all Sony has to do is stop being asshats and announce their plans now that they sucker-punched MS into revealing a stupid pricing scheme," that will deter me the 6 or w/e months between 360 and PS3.

Heck, with college starting, I'm not playing FFXI anyway, so whats the deal!!!! *sulks* /endrant

oh yeah, EQ Online Adventures for PS2 was fun for it's time, like all MMORPGs i suppose, but yeah, it straight ran off of the CD, which was ok cause there was no loading times anywhere, but kinda limited cause the worlds looked seriously bland. So yeah, for a game like FFXI, we wouldnt need ppl playing that are bitching about buying a HDD.

Well, seeing that I've run FFXI on pc and ps2, and bought an old style ps2, HDD, FFXI and CoP in one bunch for like 200$ so my wife and I can play together, I can't imagine my obsession allowing me not to buy the expanded xbox when it comes out too and blowing an assload of extra dough for it. Don't get me wrong, I think microsoft is messed up for coming out with the 2 different sku's, but am I surprised? Heh, right. You guys were?

If they can invent DVD-RW DL and add a DVD DL burner to the xbox than it is "posible", but how big is ffxi with all the updates? DVD-R DL can hold 8GBish.

Also SE could probably just make a USB 2.0 hard drive so FFXI can work on a PS3, all sony has to do is make USB 2.0 support
