    saw that earlier.

cool replica, horrible video. they also demonstrated exactly why the hell you don't use a goddamn lance on foot. That's what spears are for. (lances are for mounted combat)

Except the Gae Bolg is a halberd, the type of weapon that is impossible to use mounted without impaling yourself or your horse on the rear end, or killing your mount with the head.

They just made it a spear with fancy decorative bits because a good Halberd is pretty hard to make as the head needs to be pretty sturdy and not just a decorative attachment.

Also lances can be used on foot. ANY polearm can be used of foot in a pinch, and they are all extremely effective when used on foot. A polearm is still a polearm at the end of the day and and attacker still has to get past that pointy end to reach you. There is a good reason why spears were the most popular foot soldier weapon for millennia, and why we still use bayonets today.

        Aren't halberds technically a pole-axe and not a spear/lance?

They all fall under the polearm family, though Halberds and Pollaxes both have different fighting styles and are different weapons. Fighting with a Pollaxe is much more like quarterstaff fighting. The head was also pretty useful for tripping and disarming as well as dragging mounted opponents from the saddle. They were typically used by English Knights (who traditionally fought dismounted) to fight other armoured opponents that the Longbowmen didn't already shoot, or kill with their warhammers.

Halberds are basically an axe blade on a long shaft with a spike on top (basically the Gae Bolg), the back side of the head is usually hooked to dismount mounted opponents. They do often come with a spiked tip on the bottom so the back side of the weapon can be used for offence. You basically need the head to be pretty sturdy as it would be used to block and deflect swords. Halberds were usually considered a "Peasant's Weapon" but master Halberdiers were as deadly as any other weaponmaster. They were usually used in formation to counter mounted Knights early on and were later used to protect gunners from cavalry

Both are primarily infantry weapons due to them being impracticable to use from horseback. Halberds were typically a lot longer though, Pollaxes are more staff length.

The main difference between spears and lances is that lances are for horseback fighting and were rarely expected to be used more than once for kind of obvious reasons, so they are longer and heavier than a spear. The point I was making is that a lance works on foot in a pinch (though obviously isn't your best choice of weapon in a melee), it's still a large pointy stick that gives you reach at the end of the day

Yes I know the difference between using a spear and a lance and that's why I brought it up

The class is called LANCER but uses mainly spear-wielding techniques/movements yet the vast majority of weapons equipped are lances (I think there may be a few actual spears in the game?) which would make sense if fighting on a chocobo (or on a dragon :D ) but we're not so yeah why the sweet F would you want to use a heavy, cumbersome weapon on-foot much less perform jumping attacks with it lol. That said, assuming you had the physical strength the extra weight of the lance ironically makes it more ideal for Jumps than a spear.

There's a very good reason that spears were the go-to weapons of choice for the roman legions and the samurai (though Samurai also had various types including ones specially made for dismounting mounted infantry).

Speaking of SAM, that's also why I think it might be LNC's 2nd job instead of a Katana based class this time around. LNC already has meditate (invigorate) and it could be done as an evasion/parry tank similar to WAR.

Gae Bolg looks like it could be a spear actually with the way the blade is carved, but the stupid fancy decorations on it give it the appearance of a lance. But again, this is SE we're talking about. At least Scythes aren't a main battle weapon this go around rofl.
