But back to business, I wonder if the ps4 will have the same issues that the ps3 has, such as mobs not loading.

Well, PS4 has 16 times as much memory as the PS3, and is vastly more powerful than the base recommended spec for FFXIV. That said, I put nothing past the incompetence of Square-Enix's programmers.

But on the whole I expect the PS4 version, despite new hardware, to work much better than the PS3 version.

The loading issue is a problem with the inferior CPU/GPU of the PS3, not with just solely a memory architecture/capacity issue. Whereas the PS2's sole problem was with memory and memory alone, this time out, the PS3 just had a really bad processing architecture as a whole (especially when you compare it to the 360) When the PS3 can't even handle a simple web browser, you know there's major issues there. Hopefully the PS4 is the right balance between the systems, and not just "really great in one area, totally mediocre in another area" kind of system.

No it doesn't.

I think console and PC hardware is diverging, with consoles going the way of smartphones.

What?

Smartphones are bound by the power draw of battery technology and thus are being optimized for size and power draw first and foremost.

Consoles are bound by production cost.

PCs aren't bound by much of anything except total power draw and heat generation.

The PS4 is a great example of console tech converging with PCs, not smartphones. It's more or less a mid-grade PC with an overpowered GPU and memory.

Kinda late to this party, but for what it's worth, I play on PS3, and changing out my HDD to an SSD drive instantly resolved the issues where NPC's and mobs would not load, or be slow loading. I never run up to an NPC and have to wait for it to display on my screen anymore. That being said, there are still unavoidable limitations in the amount of objects that can be displayed on screen due to processing power and RAM, but Yoshida said this will be resolved in the PS4 version where players will see the same detail as on a PC. Guess we'll see in a month. My PS4 has been generally collecting dust, and I'd like to play it.
