I'm going to check and see if there is a thread devoted to "Good memories at Vulkrum Dunes" and if not I'm going to create it... I took every single job to level 25 or so and I have tons of great dunes memories. Plus, today is slow at work...

I'm just saying, some things were better in XI and it makes me wonder if SE should have just left well enough alone. For everything they fixed that sucked about XI they've created a new issue ><
That's just that (forgot name of pyschology terminology) where you are wistfully remembering the good old days, but if you had the opportunity to do the exact same thing now, I'm almost guaranteeing you're going to be all like, "god, wtf is this b*s*". It was a different time, with a different set of circumstances. There were hardly any other MMORPG alternatives at that time that could even come close to the triple A works like Everquest, and later, World of Warcraft. Now the genre is over its head in all forms of P2P, F2P, and B2P titles, most bad, some good. But enough variety there that people aren't so enamored with the one or two things that all they had to choose from. I tried to go back to FFXI a year ago and in 5 minutes, wondered wtf I thought was so great about the game. Then I realize that two things helped made it good At the Time (tm): (1) The community and friends (2) no real competition.

No, it's not just rosy-eyed nostalgia, I legitimately had a number of good dune parties back in the day where we blazed through it in no time and everyone was having fun being social while it happened.

Bolded for emphasis. I'm pretty certain that if you were in a stoic party, you wouldn't have remembered anything.

I had a Dunes party that went all the way from low/mid level (for the Valkrum Dunes) to Qufim Island to Delkfutt Tower. It was 5/6 JP, but they managed to teach me how to Magic Burst on BLM.

The party didn't break up for Japanese players' meal time; we just all came back after half an hour. One guy even had an unexpected visitor IRL--but we kept him in party until he could get back to the game. People were polite, but joked around. The couple wipes we had, no one was upset; positive attitude ruled the day.

To this day, I'd still rate that as the best exp party I've ever had.

(It's also probably one reason why to this day, I still want to join JP groups more than NA groups--except the people from my FFXI/FFXIV LS.)

Also, had a blast taking my WAR through that zone of too bright sand--got my first taste of tanking. (Leveled PLD in Buburimu with LS--even better time!) There were also a bunch of half-LS parties, and those were always enjoyable, good or bad exp.

Over all, mostly ho-hum, and more than enough bad parties--but there were some truly good times, too.
              Bamboo shadows sweep the stars,
              yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
leaving no trace in the water.

Hmm, I remember one time being in an all-BLU party, and it worked stupidly well. At first we were all a bit iffy about it, but it just sorta worked o.O

                  Garuda hm.... Just that...

One day I'm able to kill Garuda fine no problem. Three runs easy kill no drop. Forth she drops some one else gets the weapon, then I get stuck with incompetent people and I just keep having my ass handed to me over and over. She's so fucking easy, but people just can't kill her for some reason.

Titan Hm isn't all that hard as long as you have some one who calls out what is going to happen. Was 0/10 on him, until some o e started calling out his phases, and moves. The plums usually cause the wipe, because they happen so fast, it's hard to move out of them.

Oh, and good healers help too.

This is a fight is NOT a cockblock. This fight is for weeding out the bad players from Coil ,and I hope they keep beating Titan as a requirement for Crystal Tower and the new Dungeons coming up.

The tank has the easiest job by far in Titan. They just have to pop Defensive CDs at the right time and step away from bombs. DRG and MNK are about the same too because you don't have to worry about plumes at all. You just sidestep the Landslides and don't use a move with animation lock when Landslide is the next move.

Healers and BRD, BLM or SMN? Yeah Titan hates them. A Lot. BLMs can stand in the Landslide or Mountain Buster thanks to Manawall though. In Phase 5 it's even more chaotic too since they need to be lining up for plumes to avoid killing each other while can be overwhelming for new players (and veterans), all while dodging stuff on a platform that gets slammer and smaller. While the melee DDs just to get sit tight, stabbing it and dodging the odd plume.

If, as a DD you die before the Heart Phase it's a wipe. A healer can he saved, if the tank is dying them it's more then likely a gear issue for the tank or healers. But if you, as a DD, are dying before the heart Phase then it is an L2P issue.

This is all you need to remember. Healers you need to be precasting AoE Heals at stomps and Jumps (SCH needs to bubble for Jumps and Earthen Fury), and using Esuna/Leeches on the people that just got freed from the rocks, while dodging all the plumes, landslides and bombs. Oh yeah you need to be precasting heals at the Table Flips too as while it only hits a tank for 4k max, there is going to be a 2k hit before and after the flip which, as a combo WILL murder tanks not in full Darklight. Sucks I know but the Melee guys get it easy here.

Seriously though, Tanks and Melee DD's can safely ignore most of it and the entire fight is easymode for them.

For DRGs the fight is basically:
                        • Stab Titan.
                        • Stab the jails when they pop, but ignore the second one in Heart Phase until the heart is down.
                        • Don't use moves with animation lock when the next move is landslide. You WILL die and you WILL wipe if it is pre-heart.
                        • Don't stand in shit.

The #1 Rule in ANY fight as ANY class: Dodging shit is more important than finishing off your cast, or sneaking in an extra stab. Hitting an ability as you move updates your position serverside, and if you do that while in AoE and the Boss' castbar is nearly full, it's your own fucking fault you got hit by it. It's not lag or latency, it was natural selection. You wouldn't stand in traffic would you? Then why would you stand in boss AoE?

The #1 Rule for Titan is: don't expect a carry, even in a premade group of Allagan Geared +1 Relic players. If you don't pull your weight you will cause a wipe. Also your setup should be 1 Tank, 2 Healers, 5 DD. A DD can be replaced by a WAR or WHM though, since you won't lose much damage if they DD until they WAR needs to go into Tank Stance or the WHM needs to drop Cleric Stance. Oh yeah, also don't try it without 3.5k+ HP as a DD or Healer so you can survive a bomb going off. Sometimes you WILL have to eat a bomb to avoid a Landslide in Phase 5.

As you may have seen in my other thread, I did finally win. I lucked out and got a charity win from a group of about 4 or 5 guys that gets people Relics for free as a courtesy thing, they were sooooo nice.

Having said that, it's not like I just coasted my way to the win; I busted my ass off the last few days going from 41~47 in 1 day (coulda had 50 but well, not really smart or healthy to have done that) and then 47~50 all the way to AK the next, and finally did Hydra & the HM primals yesterday. For a while I wasn't sure if I was ever going to beat Garuda but I finally landed a smart DF PUG. I still think Titan's a cockblock for first timers. If you can't handle him up until the heart phase, yes, you really are bad and have no business even thinking about Coil I agree.

After that he gets a bit batshit and I couldn't help but just stare at the screen dumbfounded the 1st time I got that far into the fight thinking "Is SE for real with this bullshit?!"

It could have just been because I was doing mostly PUGs (quite a few with several +1 relic owners) who didn't know how to position themselves (myself included) but when I saw like 5 or 6 weights all stacked under each other.... yeah there was no escaping that. And then the increased bombs, and he f'ing adds 2 extra hits to Tumult (and it does more damage) and I was just wondering how in the sweet Hell I was ever going to clear that. But I did ^_^

EDIT 2: WTF now a good chunk of my post just randomly got deleted? wtf...

Do you need to complete the main storyline quest before you have access to primal hard modes? I'm on the last fight, Praetorian. When i look at the duty finder it just has the primals listed as trials.

Yes you need to finish the main scenario and then you can access them 1 by 1. There will be a quest for each @ the waking sands asking you to attune to the aetheryte which grants access to the fight, then you have to beat the primal and head back to the waking sands to unlock the next fight (Ifrit -> Garuda -> Titan)

Ifrit's pretty easy quite honestly, though Garuda is the first real skill check in the game and Titan is like 10x worse. You want to have an average iLv of 60 bare minimum before going in or he will wipe the floor with you (70 is better but I would hold off on spending too many tomes on Darklight just yet because of crystal tower).
