    Re: Gathering Completely Sucks Now

That's true, and a good idea but for now I'm fine. I have a fairly fast connection now and unlimited bandwidth (costing an extra $30 a month for that but worth it) so at worst it's a minor inconvenience if/when I need to reinstall. I'd prefer a disc, but I'm not buying the game again if I don't have to.

No, you don't. You don't get pre-order bonus. You only get Early Access and the CE digital items. You do NOT get pre-order bonus items. To get those, you need to pre-order (duh) something ... and since it's redundant and a waste if you purchase an ARR PC CE (unless you can give someone the game code), it's better to get the ARR PS3 CE instead. Which is what I did.

        Re: Gathering Completely Sucks Now

Gathering is still as mind-numbing as it was before in 1.0, but having several new abilities post 37 help make things a wee bit interesting (do I use GP regularly to keep up my gathering rate constant for nodes where I have less than 95% chance, or do I hoard them to generate a guaranteed HQ on the 6th strike?)

What I'm encountering is the fact that I need to grind up a whole lot of stuff in order to level and then I end up with excess inventory and toss them to the vendors (the market is glut with excess inventory, causing a depress in prices, and RMT hawkers and "First-50s Gatherers" constantly undercut around the clock, making market selling really useless) I don't see how adding more strikes per node will help with this issue as all it will do is make the current situation make it downright laughable. This was a no-easy compromise for going with this simpler gathering route over 1.0. If they had retained 1.0 "mini game" (which I was in favor of, actually), they could've justified higher strike nodes, as well as greatly increased exp, since gathering would be completely dependent on skill and gear, rather than RNG luck with HQ strikes like it is now.

SE will kick out most of the RMTs eventually, but the prices--or, more precisely, the reward/effort ratio of gathering vs. auction house prices won't be so easily nudged. If it's easy to gather and sell for good gil, more people will gather the item--until the demand goes down, or the price goes down. Either you have a superior (i.e. more efficient) method to gather (and hoard that secret) an item, or it will become meh-ish return for the effort sooner or later. If it's hard to gather, most people will not bother with the item--hence useless to them.

Compared to FFXI (since I don't know squat about 1.0), ARR is in some way far kinder to the crafters, since gears cannot be resold after use, their customers won't become their competitors. That (in theory) should also means it's kinder to gatherers, since crafters will need more raw material to keep people in the gear.

On the other hand, there's no high quantity, steady market consumables like Shihei (for Utsusemi) or arrows/bullets, either, as far as I can tell. Food is about all we have, and in the current phase of the game, the boost they provide (at least at lowbie levels where I am) don't seem significant enough to be so religious about being "well fed".

It will be interesting to finding out if gathering/crafting will become an integral part of the game or minor distractions for bored people waiting on DF as the player base and the game evolve together.

Gear can be sold after it's used, it just needs to be repaired. (unless that's changed since 1.0...)

^ no you can't. the moment an item is bound to you that's it, you either NPC it or convert it (if you can).

I don't live in Toronto, and yes you could in 1.0 if you repaired it. They changed that in beta.
