Not really sure what the hell they were thinking, but the consensus on the forums appears to be that they've destroyed whatever fun was left in gathering.
Not only did they reduce the # of attempts, but they apparently doubled the delay between swings and didn't even adjust the EXP rates. So the overall pace of gathering has gotten much much slower (something nobody asked for) and GP skills feel wasted now with so few attempts at each node.
As a side note, I'd also like to add that quick synthesis is a joke - all it does is remove the need to push the button between each synth, you still do each item 1 after the other as you would manually (though they finish in 1 action, that doesn't change anything if you're just grinding out a bunch of materials like say bronze ingots for use in other recipes).
I dunno, feels like somebody dropped the ball big time which is not good this close to release. Fishing feels like it needs a bit of tweaking as well, and I can't for the life of me understand why they waited so damned long before letting us test it.
