It's the first three letters of Archer too. I think the nut of the problem is they picked a bad name for Arcanist, considering the abbreviations.

In the context of this conversation, yes, it was known what was being talked about. That does not make it less important of a distinction. This is more of a personal thing than a matter of forum importance, but I believe clairity in language is important to communication. That's why I jump to Mal's defense on this particular topic. I hold the Orwellian belief that the habit of lazy communication leads to lazy thinking.

Would have been so much easier had they used 4 letters >_>

      ARCH and... ARCA or ARCN

Do people in FFXI still debate PAL versus PLD?

It's an easy mistake to make. The name Arcanist was picked because it probably makes perfect sense in Japanese but very few of the names make sense in English.

Conjurer = Someone who practises Evocation, summoning a spirit, demon, god or other supernatural agent. Why not just call them an "Elementalist" because it fits the lore perfectly.
Thaumaturge = Basically a Christian/Islamic Saint (though the Islamic version is more like an FF-Style Geomancer). Even in Hermetic Qabalah it is still considered some kind of divine magic. "Sorcerer" or "Arcanist" fits the lore much better.
Gladiator = Okay this makes sense going by the literal translation of "Gladiator" into English which is "Swordsman" but really something like "Knight" or "Bodyguard" would make more sense. I guess if we stick to lore "Pit Fighter" would make a little more sense but how would they become a Paladin?
Marauder = Honestly "Marine" would make more sense in the lore. It sounds like Limsa were raided by bandits so many times they game them their own guild.
Archer = Okay not complaining about the name but the German name for it "Jaeger" or "Hunter" fits the lore a little better but that is me nitpicking.
Arcanist = Why wasn't this called "Conjurer" in the first place?

Three things I found out over the last week:

SCH can use Cleric Stance and the heals have a high potency so I'm wondering if putting all points into INT and using the stance is worth it.

You can respec your stat points by buying an item from your GC Quartermaster. So you could go pure DD to 30 then respec to pure MND if you want to go SCH.

SCH is stupidly good at making party-wide damage something you don't even need to worry about.
