While I'm not all for it, the filter has two purposes: (1) Protect SE from unwanted lawsuits (e.g., celebrities suing them for "unauthorized" usage of their names and the company "profiting" off of it aka "you take subscriptions from people who are taking liberties with these names") and (2) Remove offensive content out of the game.

The latter can be highly subjective but in some countries there are laws on the books which prohibits certain kinds of activities that goes against social/moral etiquette and are not protected under freedom of expression. For example, there are laws in Germany that prohibit anti-semitism and anti-semitic activities.

So, in beta, there's this: FINAL FANTASY XIV - Der Lodestone

Even if this was only a game launched in the NA territory, we'd still have a public backlash which would discredit the company and/or service that condoned activities that went against social morays. Blizzard has been very good at this game and I think SE would do well to start there.

Probably naming restrictions will work similarly to FFXI. Somebody reports you, a GM decides whether the name is appropriate and forces you to choose a new name if it isn't.

Also, I'm not sure but I think the profanity chat filter also applies to names. I've seen messages in my chat log from people with ???s in their names. What the filter considers profanity is about as random and inexplicable as in FFXI, though. Sometimes I see it censor the end of one word and the beginning of the next, and even when I find out what was actually said, I have no idea what the profanity is. Possibly due to obscene connotations in other languages and dialects I'm unaware of.

I just want an exclusive prompt to show up every time someone tries to name themselves Cloud or Sephiroth or some labored version of the two with "Ha ha. Fuck you. No."

They can let Trunks go through the filter, however, because anyone that names themselves a DBZ character should be known so we can avoid them

There are dozens of Strifes and Leonhearts and Highwinds running around. I'm disappointed not to have seen a single Figaro. Among the first names Lockes and Balthiers are also sadly missing.

I'm using the surname Hyral. I've seen a handful of those about, but only one other with the Playstation spelling.

I did see someone named Digger Nick (switch the first letters between the two words) in-game as well as Ass Pull (or was it Sass Pull? They were moving too fast across Ul'dah to verify)

I guess this is a good thread to post the question and need for opinions.

Have a female Miqo'te named Penance Rousseau. However, switching over to a Female Roegdyn. Keep the name Penance Rousseau or change it to Penance Black? Other thoughts? :s

Note: The Miqo'te version has red hair -- which is where the Rousseau came from. Otherwise, Black is usually my surname for internet things when it's not my real name.

Personally rather like Raven Sable or Obsidian as far as name goes, particularly for a Roegadyn.
