    Re: Crystal Call Trailer

Yoshida said that it's because they had made a promise (damn you Tanaka...) that the game would be on PS3, so they have to make good on that - they don't want to piss anyone off.

But, I gotta agree - they'd be so much better off just saying to hell with the PS3 version and making it for PS4. Or, at the very least, incentivise PS3 owners to upgrade so they can eventually scrap (something they never really did with XI and PS2) for the benefit of the game.

PS4 version will have no near near as many subscription as PS3 will generate for FFXIV ARR, mew. It's not smart leaving the Sony console will the largest userbase out of the fun. PS4 has yet to prove itself in the market and it would take a while before it can match PS3's potential subscriber numbers.

You mean make it a PC exclusive? SE has been promising this title for the PS3 for YEARS and so without needing to further alienate that segment of gamers, they NEEDED to release it in this manner. Feel free to take over the reins of XIV development and make it better than what Yoshi-P has already done. And I don't buy the premise that Sony can sell 30 million PS4 units in the first year to reduce the risk SE would've have to take on with a straight to PS4 release.

I like the armchair quarterbacking on this thread. People make it seem so easy to develop for games.

You give the game stupid limitations and everyone will be annoyed with them for the rest of the game's existence. For example, I want my inventory to be one giant bag. Oh wait. PS3 limitation.

Called PS3 limitations when FFXIV was announced for the PS3. Glad to see that we only need to update a single number on our PS2 Limitation image macros.

To be fair, no other game has "one giant bag" for their inventory (RO2, GW2, WoW, etc.) and that has more to do with memory architecture for networks than client-side.

There's a lot (I do mean, a LOT) on the back-end of MMORPGs that most people are completely unaware or are ignorant of. Before I see someone with some semblance of networking experience come in here with a biting commentary, let me ask you, have you developed games that requires the kind of architecture that would make even a corporate sized structure like IBM child's play? I've run private servers for MMOs before and know well enough how these things work.

WoW actually does have one giant bag for their inventory. You can set it up as such, instead of using the bag slots. Therefore, PS3 limitation, as stated by Square-Enix.

You keep rattling on about how none of us having coding experience. That's not the bleeding argument here. The argument is: "Why is SE releasing a game on a soon to be obsolete console that inhibits certain game functions?" Because they made a promise? Fuck it. Sometimes promises need to be broken so your game isn't outclassed by WoW's 7 year old inventory system.

What do I know? Not like any sort of console put limitations on past cross-platform MMOs. Oh wait. How many times did I have to fight that mandragora model? From 1 to 99 because of PS2 limitations.

No, it's not the same. You can perform client-side coding (called Add-Ons in WoW, might be called other things with other games like Rift) which tricks players into feeling that they have "one large bag", but it's most certainly not. If you don't believe me, look under the hood, and you will find IDs for each slot in those bags TIED to IDs for each bag. That is not the same thing as having one large container and throwing everything in there starting from Slot 000 all the way to Slot XXX.

It's not the actual programming (Icemage here has more than any of us combined) but the network side of things. As for Blizzard's AAA-class data centers? Remember, SE has never had that opportunity (privilege?) of having that many subscribers so they have to, at the most, look at FFXI's peak numbers to fall back on. Whether or not ARR is going to blow up in their face at release largely depends on (a) how well their architecture scales and (b) how well their data center(s) can handle the load and as well as who they're partnering up to make sure that the data gets delivered (and received) at near perfection. Most people have forgotten that Blizzard had accumulated the resources and know-how on such massive scaling going back to the original BNet and have spent literally billions of dollars on their infrastructure, support and vendor relationships (Comcast, Sprint, AT&T to name a few) over these years to achieve perfection. Let's not forget that Blizzard toiled long and hard and had various PR issues as well as some nightmare scenarios to get to where they are. And you think they're willing to just give out that kind of know-how freely to the rest of the industry and hurt themselves? /smh

Edit: Going back to the one bag discussion, let me ask you, have you played PS3 games on your TV and have you tried to imagine what opening "one large bag" or, say, 100 inventory slots will look like on your TV? I don't care if you have a 24" LCD or 50" plasma, resolution scaling doesn't work that way. You cannot change resolution to fit the kind of TV you own (well, you *can*, but that's just a couple of options between two HD settings) as you would between two different kinds of monitors for your PC (e.g., 17" and a 24")

Edit 2: Even Greg Street admits porting WoW to next-gen consoles would be a challenge.

"It can be done, it would just be a big challenge for a game like WoW."
Again, while it might've been overdone in FFXI, blaming the PS2 console for the game's shortcomings, it's still not out of any stretch of the imagination to see why MMORPGs games are almost non-existent for home consoles.

                    Re: Crystal Call Trailer

Not reading a wall of text in a forum post. Doesn't matter if the bag slots in WoW are still signed to individual bags (which I already knew, but thanks.) Fact of the matter is, it's still done. And not really sure where you're going with your argument. Essentially agreed with me that putting the game on a (underpowered) console wasn't smart.

If your game can't have standard MMO functions, because of the system you want to put it on, then don't put it in there, especially when the next of kin comes out two months later. End of story.

I think he's trying to say that the bag limitations in FFXI were imposed by the networking infrastructure rather than the PS2 itself. I don't know enough to tell if that's bullshit or not so I'll just wait for Icemage to weigh in.

By referencing the PS2 limitations FFXI had and predicting how FFXIV will run into similar walls with the PS3, right?

Pretty sure Tanaka flat out said the inventory restrictions for XI were primarily because of the limited RAM of the PS2.
