Regional Data Centers and World Transfers (06/05/2013)
Anyone know how to activate dyes? For the life of me, I can't see the quest by the merchant, so I am guessing it's not from him. Everyone keeps saying how it's a level 15 quest. Sure, I got tons of 30+ classes, and I'm pretty sure that's not the trigger. Also completed the main mission to the dungeon, so I'm sure it's not that as well...
Anyone know how we can set our gear so it remembers what to equip when changing jobs?
This is called gear sets. They should automatically unlock at L15 when you complete the L15 main story line quest. As I recall you don't even have to save them, it just remembers what you had on when you last had that gear set
If you look under your Characterr screen there will be a 'Gear Set' drop down box that shows you current gear set and the list of all available gear sets (including blank one)
awesome, thanks. i there a listing of the main storyline quests and who to talk to out yet? or do you just run around uldah completeing them all?
This is very easy to track in your Quest Logger and in-game Map. All main story line quests have a different icon than normal quests. Normal quests have the standard gold '!' but the main story lines quest , dude... totally... the '!' is on frickin' fire man! Its on FIRE!
Re: Regional Data Centers and World Transfers (06/05/2013)
I regret to inform you all that despite my desire the play FFXIV, I've opted not to. I simply have too much on my plate with the new job and all the networking I'll need to do with them to get a good impression ingrained on them from the start... and with all the wedding planning that is literally burying me. Don't get me wrong, I love being buried in this kind of stuff... but with both things happening at once, I have no time for anything recreational.
I'm going to remain here on the site casually and keep tabs on the goings on... but I'm just not going to be able to play. It's just not in the cards. I'll get too into it and my work and home life will suffer if I do.
I'll live vicariously through all of you, though. HAVE FUN!!!

You do have to update them; they don't auto-save. Whenever you get an upgrade for your job, right-click the gear set and iirc the menu option is "reassign."
I have to say, I came into this with very low expectations and I've been super impressed. The interface is not only serviceable this time, it's functional in ways I didn't even expect. Long zone times are a drag, but keeping access to chat while zoning is fantastic. Drag-and-drop UI customization is great. Setting target markers in macros is brilliant; Makes it a lot easier to tell what's sleeping and what to focus fire. The way the interface puts all the important information in the middle of the screen so you actually get to see the action rather than ignoring it to scrutinize the chat log is just frickin smart.
The biggest surprise for me has been the light party dungeons in the story quest line, especially the boss encounters. Why the hell couldn't they make anything in FFXI this fun and dynamic?

I'm still confuddled by the mention of long load times. People on the forums are saying an SSD has their load times down to 3 to 5 seconds, but that's how my load times are on an HDD... As well as a few others. Then others are saying their load times are up to 10 and sometimes 15 seconds. Huh?
Hopefully it's just debugging software they have running in the background for beta.
Re: Regional Data Centers and World Transfers (06/05/2013)
Depending on the zone, 10-15 seconds is about what I'm getting. To be fair, I'm running on some fairly old hardware. If the HDD itself isn't the problem, maybe it'll clear up when I get more and faster RAM.
Re: Regional Data Centers and World Transfers (06/05/2013)
I've experienced similar load times as Etra on a 5-year old PC technology (it's antiquated according to modern gaming standards) It could be an issue with hard drive fragmentation or with network latency or both (I think SE adopted a background download similar to Blizzard's system as it takes off some load from the client-end and puts it on your bandwidth instead)
I love the dye system and how nuanced the tones are. I went ahead and recolored my cobalt armor.

I thought you get it after completing the level 10 class quest. You're suppose to be able to use gear sets once you can unlock other classes.
Just dye all that stuff the same color and you're golden. Or what ever color you choose instead.

Because Tanaka.
Seriously, screw him - Yoshida has proven he really knows his stuff and I him for it. I don't mind having to do the whole Reassign thing, but it would have been nice if the game had actually informed me of this - I sorta happened upon it by accident after fuming over it for a moment. I haven't actually tried using any macros yet, not sure exactly how they work either since the addition of the hotbars. I just love how combat feels in the game now compared to XI. For all my fond memories of it, I really just couldn't force myself to go back to its draconian mechanics, not even for Rune Fencer. ARR has fixed pretty much every single gripe I ever had with XI.
Re: Regional Data Centers and World Transfers (06/05/2013)
Gear sets themselves are so convenient that having to manually update them isn't even anything to complain over. Especially if you wanted to maintain multiple gear sets for the same job. Tanky marauder vs smashy marauder, say.
Side note about gear sets and dyes, gear sets actually remember the color of the items you saved to them. If you redye a piece and then don't update your gear set before using it again, it'll say the right items were equipped, but some of them weren't the same color. So if you gear marauder in red and gladiator in white, you can have two of the same helmet in different colors and the system will keep track of which is for what job.
