The technological achievements of Spirits Within were great but the story was average at best and the CGI characters were a bit creepy really.

Sakaguchi shouldn't have tried to follow the western movies model, mew. Well even staying close to the FF essence, Square shouldn't have spent money on making movies.

Movies are very outdated and overrated forms of entertainment and storytelling compared to videogames anyway, especially FF mmorpgs.

Just like the movies medium have surpassed books, videogames have surpassed movies (and board games) mew.

We can tell movies have surpassed books by the way everyone describes every book-to-movie adaptation as being "not as good as the book."

I'll say it again, Spirits Within would've been a success if they had left the lolFinal Fantasy name out of it. As a FF movie it couldn't have done a poorest job, not to mention everyone wanted a FFVII movie at the time (which eventually became Advent Children.)

But as an independent IP it would've been much better received because of how good the animation was at the time. I like the movie, and I actually have the dvd (haven't checked to see if there's a BD version yet), and all I need to do to enjoy it is forget Final Fantasy was in the title.
