Re: PS3 version might sell for $39.99 new

of course FFXII can't match FFXI, but FFXI and XIV deserve their numbers. They don't need to be regular rpg to get numbers. Anti-mmorpg fans just think some delusional rant about numbered Final Fantasy mmorpgs just because they don't like mmorpgs or think there's some rule that only FF rpgs deserve a number (just because they will miss out on those mmos, therefore they feel left out and their collection seems incomplete) . It's Square property so they decide what Final Fantasies deserve a number. And anyways, FFXI is more like what Final Fantasy should be than even the classics, mew. FF mmorpgs bring the franchise to greater level of experiencing a great FF world in countless more and better ways. Like some people said, regular FFs you just mainly follow some story and beat it, but FF mmorpg you make your own life career with that FF world, so there is greater degree of freedom, choices, adventure and greater challenges than any regular FF RPG, mew. but it still true FF.

part of me still wants to jump into FFXIV ad get a little more of a head start for 2.0...... but with what I am playing now, I have no real desire to play in it's current form.

I have the exact opposite problem lol..

I've accomplished my "primary" goals, but I'm having a bitch of a time getting all the extra stuff done - namely the achievements that are going away permanently. I can't get the holiday stuff which blows (even the current one, as I guess most ppl are sick of the event and I don't blame them - you don't even have a hope in hell of winning with less than 8 people) so that mainly leaves the exploration (I still have absolutely no clue how to reach some of those aetherial gates) and the dungeon clears.

Hopefully I can finish up darkhold, aurum vale and cutter's cry in time (and snag some nifty gear in the process. Do want heavy darklight!)

You're on a Final Fantasy form. Remember the 4 Rules of FF Forums

          1) All FF games are shit, except for your favourite one which is the best game ever.
          2) Even that one is shit.
          3) The latest FF is shit no matter how good or bad it really is
          4) Except when the next FF comes out, then it suddenly wasn't so bad at all.

People can still find 7 other people to do the event with, mew.

It's just some people are too lazy with socializing and don't care to search for people that are also looking for people to do the event and get the holiday prizes.

You're not doing too hot in the socialising department yourself.

What did you say meeew?? ><

I just mean that if people put effort in socializing, asking people and stuff, they can find people for events and stuff. I mean it's like mmorpg and FFXI socializing 101.

FFXI is proof that making your game revolve around getting 5 other people to all agree on a 3 hour time slot to play together is a really dumb idea.

If the industry was dependent on people with overexpectations, companies would have gone out of business a long time ago. Self entitled people are really in the minority and more people are flexible and willing to give mmorpg time to expand while people make use with the content that is available. There will be criticisms but the most successful videogames and mmorpgs always receive criticisms, but that doesn't not cover the positive and valuable side of things.
You know, I remember a time when it wasn't possible to set your expectations too high for a Final Fantasy game. Every new release of a Final Fantasy title would blow away all preconceptions about what was possible for a video game to achieve in storytelling, or what a console was capable of graphically and in expansiveness of the world. Maybe we were naive to think that could continue forever, but that was the mythical quality of the name. Final Fantasy was the swan song of a dying company that defied all expectations to bring that company back from oblivion. So even if that magical sheen has faded over the years, being told our expectations are too high for a Final Fantasy game, especially coming from a person who's always telling us how hyped we should be about everything, causes me so much cognitive dissonance that I can't even fully express it.

Re: PS3 version might sell for $39.99 new

The only point to a PS3 version (hopefully) is that it is already licenced, authenticated and ready to be put up on the PS4 iteration of PSN, otherwise we get the hybrid scenario of PS3 and Vita. Meaning, Sony abandons PS3 software support but lacked the foresight to get downloadable content licensed for future endeavors.

BC will not even be in the picture and they'll take thier sweet time getting old PSN games to work on PS3 in hopes you buy the paltry amount or shit they made available. In Sony's head, the past is detrimental to shoving new hardware down the market's throat. As a result the next Xbox also gets FFXIV and the cycle continues for SE MMOs getting fucked by Sony.

                        @ Taskmage

Having high bar is okay, mew, but with moderate reasonable control over those expectations, mew. A bar that is adaptable is better than a bar that holds still and doesn't budge. That's what I mean by high bar not being good thing, but it is good thing as long as people are willing to be flexible with what FFXIV offers and not be strict with their large spectrum of demands, mew.

                        @wtfbbq

I'm sure there are people still enjoying FFXI on PS2. PS4 isn't even out, the majority of people wouldn't buy it at launch price anyway.
Just like a PC that can play FFXIV but won't be upgraded, people can enjoy PS3 version, even if PS4 is not backward compatible with it, mew, people would ALREADY have a system that can run it and play it, mew.

So even after PS4 released, PS3s would be even more affordable to play FFXIV as it gets price drops. Most people won't even think about moving to PS4 until PS4 costs about $200. And FFXIV fans on PS3 won't need PS4 to keep playing.

You speak nonsense. The defining quality of high expectations is that they're strict.

People like to be able to trade in their older systems for newer systems. They do that much, MUCH more frequently than they get rid of PCs.

Re: PS3 version might sell for $39.99 new

Nuuuu, high expectations may vary. Some people are strict with that bar, some are more flexible and typically those kind of people get more enjoyment out of things than stricter ones. A flexible bar can still be high enough, but of course people have different configuration of demands and tastes.

Well mmorpg fans could be exception when it comes to new console buying, because it's illogical for dedicated mmorpg people to buy a new console if their current console can play the mmorpg they play, especially people that play that mmorpg and nothing else. And also people with a tight budget, it's better for them to concentrate on the mmorpg with the console they have than buying a pricey new console and no time to play them both, mew.

So based on people's list of priorities, they will hold onto the current console if they want to play an mmorpg only available on that. If PS4 becomes backwards compatible with it or it's going to be ported to PS4 also, that can be a plus for new console buyers, but overall, PS3 would still be widely played and widely used even after a PS4 launches.

Remember PS3 didn't even go mainstream until that significant price drop, mew. and there are people that still use their PS2s for things exclusive to it.

And especially when it comes to an mmorpg where people dedicated time and effort for content they earned, it's less likely they would let all that go for a new console, especially if they have things they want to do with it and content to obtain, and levels to develop and fwends to do fun stuff in the mmorpg.

                                Agreed.

Although I gotta say a decade ago when people didn't have that many options it actually did work as intended for the most part. And for a time it was good.

But XI didn't evolve with the times, and when the floodgates of entertainment were opened people just didn't have enough time or patience to waste on a single game (to get barely anything done) anymore. And since the community was already so "old" and grumpy from all the forced partying, putting XI on the back-burner and eventually quitting became easier and easier as time passed.
