Final Fantasy XIV PS3 Update – Interview, New Details – PlayStation Blog

Re: Playstation blog has PS3 version questions answered!!

We know that a lot of console players never played an MMO and they may be scared by not knowing what to do, and we want to stress that it’s very similar to an offline Final Fantasy that always had great stories, made you cry, changed your life.
Certainly has been a lot of crying from players, beginning with FFIX ... so that much is true :p

I think this is the first time we've gotten a whole lot more information about the PS3 version at any point in the history of this game, going all the way back when Tanaka-san was at the helm. I'm curious as how they managed to optimize their engine to work with the PS3 in producing the same lavish visuals as what they were showing running off a PC. A lot of developers had bitched and moaned about the way graphics memory was being addressed and handled and if what SE says it can deliver becomes a reality, then I start to question the "competency" of these developers.

I can't get to the link. What's the new news? Anything big? I can't imagine there would be, just, "hey we really are coming to PS3! 2013!"

And to think 2GB of ram are (and were back then) so freaking cheap there is no logical reason to skimp on that while leaving other much less important and more expensive stuff in the original design...

I'm having trouble believing Kutaragi-san would make that decision.

Ah well, at least it isn't a Wii I guess.

So is the game going to suck on ps3? is that what they are saying? or the graphics wont be as good? all the graphics on ps3 have been great on the games ive played, not sure why ffxiv would be any different.

If this comes out next year, why even bother making it for PS3? The PS4 (and Xbox 720 and certainly the Wii U) will be out by then; seems absurd to tie themselves to aging hardware, especially considering how awful at code optimization the FFXIV coding team has shown itself to be. The only reason I can even imagine being plausible is because they made a promise to Sony (maybe with money attached) and have to follow through on it, but they're really doing the game, the players, and the franchise itself a disservice by binding their MMO to aging hardware.

At the very least, Sony would be the last ones to complain if they decided to release it instead for PS4, as it will give people more reasons to buy one.

do you think maybe the release on ps3 has been delayed so that it can just be released on the ps4?

                    Agreed.

But, this is SE we are talking about. And considering how much money has been eaten by this project I'm pretty sure they just want to release anything they can to try and get some money back and try lessen their losses rather than making XIV a "competitive" game.

And since they can't sell the game there probably is just not money left for them to even consider porting it to the new console or to change plans midway for a better release. And considering how low the chances of success are to begin with I'm not sure I'd even want to try either.

Better leave the effort for the next project and F2P-it to try and get some money back from this failure. For now they all they can do is go forward and hope for the best.

PS > It would really depend on how much time they have to make XIV profitable and how expensive it would be to port the game to the PS4.

Pretty much what I'm wondering as well. They should really just wait it out since PC's are only going to improve as well, so at least with a PS4 the tech (particularly RAM which was the crucial limiting factor for XI) will be far superior and less of a hindrance to future updates.

While I 100% agree on the PS4 thing, I feel like a lot of you are doom and gloom when it comes to the current state of the game and the prospects of 2.0. As it stands, while the game is still a "failure," it is definitely picking up steam. Cannot tell you how many new players are joining in on the current game and absolutely loving it. Seems every day we get one or two new people in the LS that simply adore the game and only started a few weeks ago. The game is still bringing in fresh blood (and not hemorrhaging it out.) With 2.0, I don't see how the game is going to fail like it did with 1.0.

But, yeah, bad decision to put it on PS3 if they stick with their "EVERYTHING MUST BE SAME ON ALL PLATFORMS. SAME, SAME, SAME." Otherwise, if they do break that and update the graphics / whatever for PS4 and the PC, I don't see it being much of an issue, unless they really want to do something extravagant with the game.

saving it for PS4 is not smart at all, mew. Almost no one is going to buy PS4 until a price drop brings it down to $200-$250. 2nd, almost no one will buy a PS4 specifically for an mmorpg. 3rd, FFXIV 2.0 can still have decent graphics on PS3, and get more subscribers, mew. 4th. PS2's FFXI Online difference in graphics from PC still resulted in success and many fans. 5th PS3 already has a massive amount of people that own it, so that is more potential subscribers than trying to profit from the minority that buy PS4. Remember, new consoles don't reach significant sales numbers until much later in its era when it has bigger library of videogames and lower price. So it would be suicide for an mmorpg to try to be a flagship title on a new console that most won't pay over $250 for. And you know PS4 is going to start at least $400 not counting accessories and videogames. And mmorpgs are still a niche genre on consoles. And they are 50% done with PS3 version.

I totally agree. Since joining the new LS the game has been waaaaaaay more fun.

We're talking about FFXIV, a game with a monthly subscription of $13 once 2.0 releases. While it's not the most extravagant thing you could spend money on, it's not cheap either, compared to the competition. If someone's so gun-shy about buying hardware to play a game that they can't afford a ~$300-$400 console or a newer PC, why would they suddenly have the money to spend $150 a year on an MMO?

2nd, almost no one will buy a PS4 specifically for an mmorpg.

Yes, no one at all plays DC Universe Online on PS3. Or uses Netflix. Or heaven forbid they actually play other games or do other things on it. Install base size IS an issue, and would be the primary reason to release on PS3 over PS4, but that seems incredibly short-sighted considering the vast technical limitations it will place on the game; it's not like the programmers at Square-Enix need any more obstacles - they've got plenty of problems with FFXIV as it is without saddling them with a huge number of resource limitations that will force ugly compromises in the game design and likely more than a few glitches (which will alienate players and cause a lot more problems than they could conceivably recoup with additional subscriptions). It's not like the game needs any MORE bad press, but a PS3 version is almost certainly doomed to be flaky and poorly received.

3rd, FFXIV 2.0 can still have decent graphics on PS3, and get more subscribers, mew. 4th. PS2's FFXI Online difference in graphics from PC still resulted in success and many fans.
Oh, I have no doubt FFXIV "could" look "ok" on PS3. But the memory limits are going to cause huge headaches with frame-rate, geometry complexity, and likely gameplay as well, especially in the ham-handed hands of Square-Enix. FFXI launched in a completely different era; its competition was World of Warcraft, Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, and similar ilk.

I'm willing to allow that FFXIV 2.0 will be a much better game than most people will give it credit for, but releasing a PS3 version as a simple cash-grab is a terrible idea.
