会話はなぜか問題なし。だけどモダンで難しいとは言えないべきの小説・雑誌・新聞・漫画にしても分からない単語がçŸæ‰€ã€‚

There is *nothing* holding me back from this other than not speaking Japanese (well, I do live in Canada but if I had to move at this point there isn't much keeping me here)

yeah, the "speaking Japanese" part is kind of important.

Also if you actually read the requirements, you don't just need to be able to 'speak Japanese' (which is really easy, I could speak Japanese at a passable level before I ever went to Japan), you need to be highly competent in reading (which I mean, if you're translating, is a given), but even worse than that, you have to be able to actively interpret conversations as well; having experienced this just on a casual, between friends level, I can promise you that doing it on a corporate level is going to be absolutely draining, regardless of how good your Japanese may be.

Frankly, though, if you want to learn Japanese, there's a lot of us here who will help you; there's tons of resources out there; and you've been in this community for at least 6 years, probably longer. You've had more than ample opportunity, your Japanese could easily be better than any of the rest of us by now if you'd put in that exertion. But if you're not putting in the effort you have no right to complain.

Well, granted, if you are able to qualify for this job posted to SE, that means you're more than qualified for other similar jobs elsewhere and possibly be able to find it here in the States. And I'm not good at Japanese, at least not conversationally. I'm okay at reading Kanji and understanding the grammar language (Korean Kanji is relatively similar to Japanese) but I'm not "fluent".

I thought I said I lived on Oahu, but maybe it wasn't you that asked (but now you know)

And you're right, anyone can learn Japanese, but I think it's advantageous to live in Japan to do so, because of the immersion factor and the fact that you're FORCED to use it (it's like with any skill, really, in that the more you use it, the more adept you become)

I didn't pursue a liberal arts education in college (I was in EE) but did get into honors English courses and I still do like writing as much as I like reading. Although I like to write poetry more than I like ... actual writing. Not that I can't do both ... just preference /shrug. But anywho ...

I think it's better to pursue your interests rather than be forced into doing something for the sake of money (or any other reason that doesn't align with your interests)

Really? I've always gotten the impression your Japanese was far better than mine.

To be fair, we don't really talk in Japanese much here on DIV. Most of the time we just use slightly wrong English to fuck with Raydeus.

I agree with the "want to do something, spend time doing it" aspect making it much easier to learn anything; actually I've posted that around here quite a bit lately it feels like. On the other hand, you can substitute actually being in the country with just forcing yourself to constantly practice; listen to Japanese music, watch Japanese TV, read Japanese books/magazines/news, talk to Japanese people (if actually meeting them in real life is too hard, skype); same for any language. If you can't do that, you'll be at a disadvantage, no matter where you are. One thing that makes me somewhat sad is that now that I'm studying multiple languages at once, I don't have the option to immerse myself in any one language. I used to have dreams in Japanese, before I was even conversational, simply due to the amount of Japanese media I was taking in. Since I came to Taiwan, I haven't had any dreams in Japanese, Chinese, or the other languages I'm looking at.

Point being though, what Malacite is saying is along the lines of someone who never plays basketball complaining about not being in the NBA.

Getting in with SE is very much in line with my interests, actually - as is seeing Japan. That's why I'm so upset, because this is yet another opportunity with them (if you count the previous times they had openings for the XI team) I have to miss out on largely because I don't speak or write Japanese @_@

Only reason not to learn a particular language nowadays is not dedicating enough time to it. The internetz have all the resources you'll ever need to learn, and the only thing better would be actually moving to <insert native language place>.

Skypeは多分いいだけど、仕事のせいで、日本人の友達に比べて、私のスケジュールがちょっと変だ。でもãã€è‰²ã€…な言語で話したい人々にいるうウェブサイトがあるんだãã€‚ん…すぐに調べる。

Totally didn't want to hijack the thread, but since it's been almost a day...I figure it's safe. Anyway, if Mal has no interest in the resources--I would certainly be appreciative of them. I actually inquired to Aeni and Raydeus about this a few weeks back; any further info would be...awesome. No, I don't have any aspirations to move to Japan and translate the next 10 Final Fantasy games for them (though, visiting one day would be nice); I'm perfectly happy with finishing my classes and my intership back here in the states...still, it's not a looming surprise that gaming (as well as entertainment in lieu of comic (manga), animation (anime) and etc.) has split more and more since the SNES days.

Frankly, I'd like to one day be able to read books/manga and watch shows without having to pray a fansubber comes along. It might be a silly goal, but I've learned a lot in just under a month, and I want to continue that. More than anything, I'd like to be able to communicate with JP players on XIV/XI/PSO2/etc. one day...although I guess it won't be those games by then.
