Re: FF XIV Download on sale for 9.99 at Amazon!
Wow ... I don't think FFXI went that cheap in that short of time. Well, then again, SE already wrote this off as a loss. They'll be announcing pre-orders for 2.0. I can't imagine them doing an update to our current client in downloadable form using their torrent servers. LOL (6 GB download; estimated time to completion: 4 years, 10 months, 5 days)
I just hope they have a special discount for current account-holders. I don't want to spend another $60 for something I already paid (collector's edition) for. However, I don't mind paying an expansion cost, say, $30-40.

If you buy it now, you won't need to repurchase the game for version 2.0. As far as I know version 2.0 will be a free upgrade just like all other updates to the game. At least it better be this way otherwise I would have just waited until version 2.0 rather than buy it now.

Re: FF XIV Download on sale for 9.99 at Amazon!
You could say what you mean so it never seems that way.
Steam is the least invasive DRM I know of and while I'd prefer no DRM it does it's damnest to stay out of your way. Torrenting is not my preferred option, but it is an option were I really wanting to download the game. Of course then you say weird things about not getting 2.0 by getting this yet when that version updates hit, all versions become 2.0.
Ultimately, you just sound cynical or irrational without basis. I don't buy Dell computers because I didn't like the subhuman treatment we all got on the plant and office side of things. Also because Ive seen the incompetence of its management and that dysfunction comes from the top down. The computers were also shit. It's a personal reason, perhaps not one a deep as yours, but it doesn't make me seem like I'm strangely burying my head in the sand when my options are laid out for computers.

If an update of this magnitude and scope were available on physical mediums, most people will choose this route, not because of any nostalgic attachment, but because of practical reasons and limitations that they are working to get around.
Now, with regards to Steam, my issues stem from problems on my end (which can never be resolved) with connections between my ISP and their servers. The constant disconnects which never happens with any other service leads me to believe that there is some particular issue with one ISP relaying information to another ISP. The problem with this is that while I can work with my ISP to try to resolve this, Steam does not have any incentives to work with their ISP to resolve it. And it shows in their customer service (or freaking lack of) And I'm not the only one that has had issues with Steam and their support (or lack of) Again, I said it was my own personal distaste for the service and didn't want to turn this thread into a Steam complaint thread, so let's not derail this any more.

@Aeni - They have said many times that existing customers will be getting 2.0 for free through digital distribution. If they want to buy the 2.0 client, then they can do so through game retailers when it gets released. However, digital distribution will start the month prior to release. Beta for 2.0 will be even earlier. Whether they'll switch everything over for the 2.0 beta, I don't know. Wouldn't be the best idea since there may be many exploits in the beta client that shouldn't be risked for the live game (especially the way SE ignores the consequences.)sigpic
