    That looked better than expected.

    We... just need the gameplay to actually catch up to this. <_<;

what do you meeean, mew? This is an mmorpg, not an action rpg. (good thing too). Well the main story can get more epic, but overall everything seen in the video is what FFXIV already has included, mew. but pacing wise it wouldn't be good idea to expect it to be some glorified hack n slash.

But what if it's a hack-and-slash with a very emotional storyline, a joyful and innocent atmosphere and lots of characters to choose from?

When the game first came out it had more interesting (if very flawed) combat. I was hoping they went further towards a DCUO style of combat but instead they regressed it to an XI-ish style.

It's not bad, but it has a very, very heavy "been there, done that" aspect to it.

DCUO combat is real-time, but very clunky and mashy, mew. FFXIV is more better animated flow and better paced.

Also the FFXI style combat is great, mew! This also gives people more time to text chat and have a snack and stuff with it's more comfortable pacing and flow!
It also helps mmorpg lag less.

Are you kidding me? Those days of "PS2 limitations" are over. You can go back and fire up your old "pre slim" PS2 unit and relive the glory days while the rest of us will embrace a more dynamic environment and an immediate sense of control and interaction.

And if I kill you dead so that your pixels decompose into the pixelated terrain while you go and fill up your glass with Perrier, don't blame the game or blame me. You shouldn't have logged on in the first place.

I get bored with the old style XI combat, it's way too static for my current taste. That is why I go back to playing from Skyrim/Fallout 3 to Assassin's Creed instead of playing XIV.

And there's really no excuse to say real time combat makes it laggy or clunky nowadays. After all DCUO itself was released for both PC and PS3 and the combat is exactly the same. Unless Squeenix is set on having a low bandwidth game that is, then it wont be able to handle anything but Xi-ish combat. Which, considering how unresponsive XIV is in it's current form and how long it takes to load even a bunch of NPCs at the adventurers guild I'm not getting my hopes up.

PS > By the way, Guild Wars 2 does real time combat with evasive maneuvers, field positioning and all the cool stuff while keeping the use of skills the old fashioned way.

but look at what DCUO sacrificed for real-time combat, mew! The character models greatly lack detail (well the excuse they are comic bookish but still ruins the immersion and organic expression of characters.)

Even picking up a large object to hit with or throw looks and feels so stupid and low budget.

The graphics look pre-PS2, the action itself is so clunky AND glitchy feeling! There is no natural rhythm to the combat, the bad physics and animations don't help make it "better" than FFXI combat either. DCUO makes FFXI look and feel 1000 times better.

There is like no sense of weight in DCUO combat. it's all this hammy and stiffy canned animations that don't have the elegance of FFXI combat, mew. THey probably sacrificed real-time weather because of it too.

Also Skyrim has better combat but it's a single player rpg. No mmorpg can look and play like Skyrim without making a lot of cuts to its content and feel, mew!

And DCUO combat is another reason why they also dumbed down party caps, and other things. It's even hard to keep track party members in something like that. It just feels so disconnected and too soloish feeling, mew. Plus the battles have no excitement to them because they are over before you know it and there's hardly any need for epic battle themes with such anticlimactic combat, mew.

also DCUO combat special effects really have no visual excitement to them compared to FFXI. Though there are a few exceptions like heat vision, mew.

So you are saying SE wouldn't be able to put together a less boring combat system with good character models and better physics?

Real time combat has nothing to do with the quality of the models, not to mention XIV's combat before auto attack only lacked mobility to be more action oriented and less static.

oh ya, mew? If real time combat don't affect their visuals cap, then why doesn't DCUO look as good or better than an older mmorpg like FFXI Online? DCUO isn't even half the size and depth of FFXI Online pre-COP.

also more speedy action doesn't translate as a good thing for mmorpgs, mew.

The combat difficulty would feel even dumbed down and require less strategy than it does now. (and people complain about Dynasty Warriors games, so a mmorpg that is just as actionish, even if it did something like PSO, would not fit the nature of mmorpg combat, really.)

Also speedier action oriented combat would also affect communication and relationship between players, mew! Gone would be the days when people had some neat things to say while fighting mobs and stuff. It would just be rush rush rush, spam spam spam, with no player interaction inbetween, parties would just clean up the mobs without any interaction between them (like is the case with DCUO, but it also doesn't help its chat box is so tiny and really cumbersome to use. FFXI you just type and press Enter. no extra presses required, all chat channels organized much better and easier, etc.

I mean really, mew, expecting a quality mmorpg to be more action oriented is like people expecting an RTS to be more action oriented.

Stylish action like Ninja gaiden and stuff just doesn't translate into a more party-oriented and social mmorpg atmosphere. It would just force mmorpgs to dumb things down and box themselves into shallow gameplay.

Each battle would mean less since people would just combo and spam and move on to the next battle.

With FFXI Online, each battle wasn't a statistic, it was a really deep effort and great feeling!

Speeden up the pacing and you remove a big part of the battles that add more weight and depth feeling to each fight without needing to make it some action game, mew.

I mean really mew, it's like people that think chess is too slow and boring and want to keep moving and attacking without turns.

MMORPG just isn't the genre for action oriented combat.

That is better for ORPGs or MMOs that have nothing to offer besides fighting.

Re: New trailer video (fan made?) The Call of the Crystal!

A fast pace combat has no bearing on how good a character model looks. FFXIII and FFXIII-2 has a fast paced combat with fairly good models (Paradigm Shifting, and hair trigger shifting, is key to beating the game with fairly little to no Crystarium progression and gear upgrading) Of course, if you're the unreactive type of player, just sitting in one Paradigm while mashing the auto-attack command over and over can also work if you grind away the progression so that your character already outlevel the content.

Which is what I suspect you want ... a Hello Kitty game with an SNES UI. You do not want to feel like you need to not only think, but react in a lightning fast fashion, much like game play (esp PvP) of other games, like WoW. You're just using the issues of character modeling, physics composition and enumeration and combat speed as a red herring.

Look, I get it, you like good looking games and a casual game experience (read: Hyperdimension Neptunia) ... that's fine and dandy but the larger population of gamers out there want a more immersive and reactive experience, something that has a pulse and something that gets the gears in their brain rolling.

J9, you don't get to use "mashy" as an adjective if you like Dynasty Warriors. Just saying.

Spoilers: People already do this in FFXI. EXP Parties are for (wait for it...) EXP. Not for socializing, unless you have downtime.

I like DW, mew, but that is a totally different subject. MMORPGs wouldn't be as popular or as inviting to many if combat was made for quick reflex players, mew. People would get fatigued faster from playing if the pacing was quicker and the button inputs were more actionish. ANd I'm sure FFXI still has more socializing and player interaction during battles / inbetween mobs, mew, at least a lot more than more button mashy MMOs .

Uh, World of Warcraft? The allure of MMOs has nothing to do with combat anyways. It's all about giving you a reward for your grind so your brain squirts some chemicals that'll make you want to grind again for another reward.
