    I still don't get why materia can't be simply equipped in materia slots and changed at will outside combat.

    You can make materia crafting a different and more complex system, but the loss of materia after melding and the need to buy gear to get it is just... meh.

      I think Materia would be better overall if they changed the system completely ...

      1. Catalyst ... I think obtaining the abilities (to meld, to harvest catalysts and to destroy the spiritbonded gear) should be simplified to just receiving a guided tutorial (virtually) from NPCs located in each of the 3 main cities and then obtaining the abilities at the end of each tutorial. The way they have it now imposes an unnecessary barrier to entry and does not encourage players to take part in it.

      2. Materia Melding ... I think just placing physical slots and limiting the number of materia to meld for any one gear is the way to go. For example, a super rare item could have 4 materia slots, while your basic run-of-the-mill quest gear will have 1. The rarity of an item as well as the difficulty associated with obtaining them should be the determinant factor in how many slots will have it. This will eliminate any chance that cheaply crafted items will be more superior to those you find in a dungeon and also remove the need for the "risk" system.

      3. Materia Consumption ... I think they can resolve this issue by requiring 2x the amount of catalyst that you used to meld the materia in the first place to remove the materia. This will provide a recourse for materia sellers so that they don't feel shafted by this (remember, this was why we have the "repair" system in the first place ... we do not just simply want "users" to easily profit off the work of the crafters)

      4. Materia stat needs to be re-itemized ... there is a bit too much of some stat and it nullifies some of the super-rare gear (taking into account the relatively low risk of trying for 3 or 4 slot materias on "crap" gear)
