I figured as much. Like I said, I really didn't expect it to be capable.
You might be able to swing by with lower settings, as long as you don't mind a hit in the "prettiness" of FFXIV. If you want to give it a shot--like I said in Dauntless' posts, I believe Amazon still has the game for 9.99 with a free month, so it can't hurt too much.
Either way...this game's engine is *terribly* optimized, which explains for the 2.0 revamp. I'm running on an i7 2600k, 8GB DDR3-1600, and a 560ti (overclocked) and I still experience some lag and stuttering in cities (pretty clear in the open, for the most part). Granted, I'm not running the top notch of hardware equipment (my SSD is tiny so I couldn't fit FFXIV on there), and I don't have a 580 or 7970--I'm usually not the type to aim for the top line of GPU's, since it seems like they get revamped more than other piece of computer hardware out there; but I've been able to max out every other game with little problems.
This game? Turning everything on high, or highest (sans AO and DoF, which kills my computer) sets my fan running at 80%+ with temps getting upwards of 70c (it was actually hitting the mid 80's before I manually adjusted the fan controls with MSI Afterburner). Not sure if anyone else is having issues with this.
Also, I notice that the settings seems borked; I tried turning down some settings to get a good FPS > performance ratio and I notice in certain cases, lowering things from a high to standard or 10 to 7 gave me WORSE performance...
Everyone remember that the server merge is set for 1 week from today. It seems that we have a resounding decision so far to move to Excalibur.
As of right now, I am resubscribed to FFXIV and ready to select Excal as my new home. I hope everyone else is similarly prepared.
I'm afraid that our choice of server will be a terribly popular one (to the tune of Odin/Bahamut ala FFXI) and that it'll fill up incredibly quickly.
After going through the effort of trying to coordinate our move to happen together, it would be a shame to have some of us get locked out because we missed the date or weren't quick enough.
Of course we choose the most popular one. Well, that means it will just be that much better. Can't wait to see the influx of players when the PS3 launches.
I've got the menu open right now and it's only saying 30 or 90 days for period length? Or is that just for my character fee, because I have my option listed at Debit/CC and 180 days, but here on the re-activation page it's different...
EDIT: Okay what the fuck SE, it IS the basic service fee and so I can only take 30 or 90 days? I want the 180, because you basically get 1 month knocked off if you go with that. WTF is going on.
EDIT 2: So I got a brief chat with an SE rep and this is what I got:
Chat
Status: Connected Agent Ben W (Listening)
Agent Ben W: Hello and thank you for contacting SQUARE ENIX Customer Support. Just a few moments while I review your question, please. Agent Ben W: From where are you contacting us? What region? You: Canada You: So The Americas You: I have the relevant pages open in my browser right now on the account management site, I'm looking at the options listed on the lodestone as opposed to what I'm actually given on the Square-Enix account management site Agent Ben W: You've logged onto the Square Enix Account and clicked on Select Service. Then click on Final Fantasy XIV. Agent Ben W: From there, you should be able to udpate your payment information to 180 days. You: I've already done this You: However, I'm looking at the options available from the reactivation page You: and it's saying only 30 or 90? You: Allow me to clarify You: I go to services, FFXIV, and then options list You: here I can already see the 180 days + Credit/Debit card, this is fine that's what I want Agent Ben W: Yes. You: However, when I go to re-activate my character, "Nefertina Goldenpaws", and proceed to the select payment & length page You: it again asks for payment type, which will be my Visa, and at the bottom it asks for Period Length and only lists 30 and 90 days You: after that there is a confirmation screen showing the basic character fee + the service fee You: I'm puzzled as to why the 180 doesn't show up there, there are conflicting statements You: I don't even understand why I'd have to select all this again when I've already done so on the Options menu You: It's not the end of the world, but I'd like to save the $5 for going 180 if I can - I intend to play this with my friends for a whie You: while* You: Do you understand? I know it must sound confusing, and it's equally mind-boggling looking at the 2 different tabs Agent Ben W: Yes. Agent Ben W: I've forwarded your report and we will look into this. In the meantime, however, if you are not able to access 180 day options, we cannot assist in activating that option. You: From what I understand, Excalibur is a rather popular choice as well and I'd hate to get locked out from joining that server in time Agent Ben W: Once you have a character on that server, you would not be locked out. You: My character is currently on Figaro, I want to switch to Excalibur as the merges are happening and people are migrating You: more over, my friends are already re-subscribed You: I don't understand why there's no 180 day option the "Reactivate Options" Page You: but there is when I go to the Options List Agent Ben W: As I said, we will make a note of your report and forward it. I am sorry for the confusion, and we will look into it. Agent Ben W: At this time, I cannot provide any additional information. You: Thank you. As far as I can see, the only thing I could do is pay for a single month and then see if that switches but then I'm still paying more than I should have to You: Which reminds me, I'm uncertain as to how the FFXI discount works exactly, if you could clarify on that Agent Ben W: This is explained on the billing website. You: I have 210 crysta remaining on my passbook, and I was hoping to clear that off by adding the 490 I'd need for 1 month of FFXI Agent Ben W: I am sorry, but we are currently closing. You: Ah ok You: thank you then Agent Ben W: As our service time is at 6 PM.If you contact us tomorrow, I will gladly, and enthusiastically, explain the billing. Agent Ben W: We are looking into this issue and I thank you very much for your time.
Apparently SE isn't even applying the discounted rates they've been advertising. I'm also wondering if maybe I can't select the 180 day option because it's February and it was only up for January?

So pretty much hop on that ASAP. Gotcha. Guess I'll be waking up at 3am to do this.
Any opinions expressed are my own, and potentially unpopular with others. Should this be upsetting, maybe, read it again, insert smiley faces, rainbows, and glitter as needed.
If anyone knows what the deal with the 180 day sub is, please let me know >_>
Also, we should really decide on an LS name. I'm leaning on Absolute Virtue if it's not already taken. It both sounds cool and is a nice little reference to FFXI.

OK so, I just got some better answers from a diff guy. The 180 day option is in fact unavailable at this time and they're looking into it (despite nothing being said about it on Lodestone) and there's actually maintenance going on right now for the payment options page, so hopefully that gets fixed asap.
Also, I have confirmation as to how the XI thing works. basically you pay for both games for 1 month, and then next month if XIV is still active you get a discount on XI. So I'm gonna have to either leave my 210 crysta as is, or use it up on XIV as I'm not paying for 2 months of XI. I just want my achievements and that's all.
