  • thinking of playing FFIXIV

    Hello,

I am thinking of starting FFXIV but I wanted some answers first.

I am a long time player of FFXI and enjoy the dynamics of the play style such as the battle system etc. I tried Rift, WOW and I didn't like the battle system. What are your thoughts and how similar are they? The battle system its self is a big turn off for me.

Yes I am an old time player who learned to play the hard way.

the game is undergoing many changes to all systems of the game, so honestly telling you anything right now would be a bit.... sketchy. wait till the end of SEP when patch 1.9 comes out, that will be adding chocobos and alot of the secondary changes to the battle system, along with main changes to crafting.

the game will be nice, once they get it fixed, and dont go into it expecting FFXI-2

The main thing is I can understand the battle system of FFXI. I mean target attack etc. it is easy to understand and a no brainer. I just don't want to have to press 5 million buttons just to attack something. I am on a PC playing a MMO/ RPG not a FPS game. If that makes sense to you. I want to enjoy the game but not get so pissed at it that I don't want to play any more.

well FFXIV was made for use with a controller just like FFXI was, so I guess it would be similar. I was able to go from FXI to FFXIV pretty fast

Also, don't forget the System Requirements for FFXIV.

If you don't have a thousand dollar machine, you won't even be able to run it with out major lag.

I have an I3 on my machine, and I lag like a bitch with the game. Opening the menu, and even tab targeting takes about 30 seconds to do. Hell, moving forward takes 30 seconds to even register. And that's in an instanced area.

I'm on a dual core laptop and it runs fine. I think you may have other issues going on then.

All my drivers are up to date, my computer is covered with all the updates, no viruses or spyware (That I know of/wasn't caught by my anti virus.)

i3 is sub-par for gaming, but the GPU is taking the brunt of the work, regardless. If it can't keep up, you'll be getting single-digit frames per second.

Just put a sticker that says 60fps next to the screen, and it could boost morale..... kind of, mew.

What is your graphics card? Is it possible to upgrade just that and see how it goes? Not sure what your budget will be but the same "minimum" cards last year that went for $170 are probably going for $80 by now so that shouldn't be too much of a hardship. FFXIV, unlike FFXI, seems to be a lot better spreading the load over the entire system (it takes advantage of multi-core CPUs) I saw huge improvements just upgrading my graphics card alone (Went from some crappy ATI 4670 to my current GTX 460)

Oh and for future players, before buying the game:

And then if you are still not sure, run Benchmark:

                          http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com...nchmark01.html

Try to hit 2,500 to get some decent performance.
