Re: Thread: Battle Reform: Auto-Attack (06/30/2011)

Here is what I posted on the offical forums thread

"what I really don't get is.....

Why are Archers complaining about close range auto attack, when they should not even be in melee range to begin with -.-

If you play it right Archers are the top DD class, but are controlled by no AA and ammunition. I think what WoW did (taking away limited ammunition) was a very stupid idea.

Like others have said, if there was ranged AA, there would be no control when it comes to damage output, or consumption, and that would ruin Archer. "

Re: Thread: Battle Reform: Auto-Attack (06/30/2011)

I'm on the fence about them not receiving an auto-attack. I think the results will largely depend on future changes to the job and battle system. A bind wouldn't be game breaking, but giving them a melee weapon and abilities would require a much larger investment of time and other resources for company that's already constantly fighting the clock in a war against obscurity. On top of that, it simply doesn't mesh with the armory system.

Re: Thread: Battle Reform: Auto-Attack (06/30/2011)

        My original point:

Ranged Attackers should be able to have some sort of usable melee range escape tool for when it hits the fan. Representing it as a melee attack is fine because really, what sort of Archer doesn't have a melee weapon for self defence? I'm fine with them getting a ranged auto attack as long as it doesn't say, eat up ammo or cause the Archer to deal too much damage compared to the other classes.

        In addition:

Point blank attacks with ranged weapons in video games are now a bit silly. It used to be an acceptable break from reality due to technological limitations but now it's just lazy programming; especially since in FFXI, a game that predates FFXIV by 9 years, was able to do it with Ranger and even allow a full hybrid build with the Corsair (True Hybrid Ranged/Melee wouldn't really been seen again until Warhammer Online and then Rift and even then, only Rift got it right).

So I'm fine with something like Archers being able to pull out a weapon if they are stuck within the minimum range of their bow.

        Personal Reflection/Musing

I personally wouldn't mind being able to do the whole "Sword and Bow" or "Sword and Gun" thing but TBH Archer is a pure ranged class so I would hardly be disappointed if Squeenix never did that. Besides, I can always log on to Rift for that since I made my ideal Hybrid Ranger (which is a blast to play in PvP even if the recent Warrior buffs made it obsolete) build on there. I already have my dream Ranger build in another game so I can play just about any other class in FFXI. Pugilist has been a lot of fun for me since I haven't seen an MMO go for the Pragmatic, Dirty Brawler Rogue/Martial Artist before for a class so it was new and refreshing.

You got nerfed, it wont stop here trust me. Better quit soon or your head might explode.

I am, but as long as they're doing it for everyone else why exclude ARC & Mages? Why do we have to have FFXI 2.0 where Haste will eventually wind up dictating who's the best DD?

I think the biggest threat to the game is giving a shit about anything anybody says on their official forums. Those people are so stupid I die a little bit on the inside when I read their suggestions. And they have a lot of suggestions.

No doubt a lot of them are mouth breathing idiots, but it's also worth noting that on the JP forums they are equally if not more pissed than we are at the ARC/Mages nerf.

Well... I don't see how mages got nerfed... you can melee with your weapon if god knows why you decided to do that. (in a party situation)

And now you got an mp free spell that you can use along with hitting with your staff if you were soloing, and your regular magic is still intact.

With ARC its just waah waah i want auto-bow > but you'll be useless when you run out of ammo? > tis ok gimme infinate arrows!

Having an infinate ammo long range attack is kind of unfair if you asked me.

Just stay out of melee range, wisely use your ammo and you'll be ok.

The dagger thing I think is more of an aesthetics thing from what I've read. I guess people think hitting with your hand looks lame.

Shanking with an arrow was suggested and I'm down with that, but its still a last ditch attack, it shouldn't be your main battle style to stay in melee range, other classes with ranged attacks use them as situational methods (GLA pulling with dagger is an example) it should be the same (in reverse lol) for ARC.

Also I really want ARC's melee attack to be a wimpy slap to discourage people from frequently using it.

                      ---------------

But really, lets see how it its implemented before we decide how horrible it is.

True, its also very sad that the good suggestions are few and far in between and don't even get the deserved attention in most cases.

I like I had this genius idea.

I wanted to distinguish/color code loot in the chat log when you get em a la FFXI.

                      This

                      You defeat thing.
                      You obtain a stick.
You obtain a jar of cookies.

                      You craft stuff
                      You made a Haubergeon.
Haubergeon is moved to your invintory
                      or
Haubergeon went to your loot list, ohshit son you better act.

                      To this.

Wow alot of feeling about ARC but confused Dux is confused with alot of the issues raised in this thread perhaps somebody could explain to me what the problem(s) are using simple words and without getting too.... excited about it?

To my mind as long as the Archer melee attack is super weak, in other words S.E. incentivies people to use their "proper" attack method, nobody will even remember AA was implemented for Archers.

I also don't understand the issue with Haste, to my understanding there is no Haste stat in XIV and right now all the stats except VIT and MND are all but useless. So I dont really understand how Haste could effect Archer.

As for the mage well I play mage and frankly I will be happy when AA comes in, sure it's not ranged any more like our invisible magical dart attack currently is but most monsters just run right up to you anyway making mages ranged attack essentially melee. From my point of view for a mage AA doees nothing good or bad except remove the pointless pressing of the 1 button.

Abilities and traits affecting Stamina regeneration will now become Haste. I think in one of the letters it was stated that the haste would only effect auto-attack timing, thus leaving Archer in the dark with their ranged attacks.

Pretty much every single other MMO in existence does this with Ranged Auto Attacks. The auto attacks are just fluff damage or happen so slowly they don't really effect that much, and the real damage comes from abilities. The vast majority compensate for this by giving ranged attackers either infinite ammo, not having auto attacks consume ammo, or some even have only auto attacks consume ammo.

Spirit Dart never cost any MP, just Stamina. I see no reason not to make it the auto-attack so their default attack will actually go up as INT rises.
